Milner biter to serve three years in prison
WALTER GEIGER
news@barnesville.com
A 24-year-old Thom-
aston man who bit
his wife and a sher
iff’s deputy during a
rampage at a home in
Milner June 28, 2022
has been sentenced to
prison time.
Karlnyus Terryk
Drake pleaded guilty
to battery and three
counts of obstruction
Thursday and was sen
tenced to three years in
prison plus seven years
on probation.
Drake apparently
went berserk, biting his
wife’s finger and
tearing things up
at her home at
103 Locust Street.
Milner police
chief Lamar Bunn,
backed up by Lt.
Michael New
man of the LCSO,
kicked in the door
of the home and moved
a couch that was block
ing the doorway.
Drake appeared at
the door to a bedroom
but did not respond to
commands from both
officers. Drake was
unarmed so Bunn and
Newman lowered their
weapons.
As Drake con
tinued to ignore
commands,
Newman tasered
him. Drake rolled
around on the
floor until he
broke the connec
tions on the taser
wires and began
to get back on his feet.
Newman tasered Drake
again when it appeared
he was about to move
toward Bunn.
Drake again managed
to roll around until the
connections were bro
ken. He got to his feet,
pushed Bunn aside and
fled across the street.
Newman caught him
and both went to the
ground. In the scuffle,
Drake bit the inside of
Newman’s left arm.
By that time, mul
tiple backup units had
arrived and Drake was
taken into custody.
Newman drove himself
to the emergency room
in Griffin where he was
treated and released.
Chief Bunn suffered a
knee injury that re
quired treatment. The
wife, Diamond Drake,
was treated by EMTs
at the scene for a bite
wound.

Dr. Donald J. Green,
who was named interim
president of Gordon
State College May 30,
was the first person
in his family to go to
college and thus has a
deep affinity for access
institutions which is the
role the local campus
plays in the state’s uni
versity system.
Addressing the
Barnesville Rotary
Club June 6, Green,
who wants to be called
Don, said he hopes to
have the word interim
removed from his title
and make good things
happen here.
“1 grew up in a small
town in
Michigan. We
didn’t have
a red light
and we had
more cows
than people.
My wife and
1 really like
it here and
hope to stay.
That is in the
works,” Green
said.
He has 27 years of
leadership experience
in higher education
with seven of those
years spent in Geor
gia. He most recently
served as president of
Point Park University
in Pittsburgh. Prior to
that, he was president
of Georgia Highlands
College in Rome where
he oversaw initiatives
and strategic
planning that
led to higher
retention
rates and
significant
enrollment
growth.
Gordon has
struggled in
both those ar
eas in recent
years.
“Over the past sev
eral years, about 50% of
the students who came
to Gordon as freshmen
did not return for year
two. There is no one
particularly to blame
for that but it is some
thing 1 plan to address,”
Green told the Rotar-
ians.
Green holds a bach
elor’s degree in public
administration from
Michigan State Univer
sity, a masters degree
in labor and human
resource management
from Ohio State and
a doctoral degree in
educational leadership
from Western Michigan.
He hopes to encour
age more and more high
school graduates from
the area to save money
and get associate’s de
grees at Gordon before
going on to Georgia,
Georgia Tech and other
four-year institutions.
Dr Green and his wife
Cathy have three grown
children and are already
immersing themselves
in Barnesville. He prom
ises to be involved with
the community.
“You’re going to see
me everywhere,” Green
concluded.
