Dept will host WALTER GEIGER news@barnesville.com Milner’s police chief Lamar Bunn and city administrator Tausha Grose had words of warning regarding population growth for their city council at its regular meeting June 26. Bunn began the dis cussion as the council perused his monthly report. “The police depart ment call volume is up. It is up significantly. We don’t always have peo ple on duty. The county has had some priority calls in which we could have helped. We had an attempted burglary in Woodall Estates where we could have helped but we had no one on duty,” Bunn said. Bunn tied the in creased call volume to population growth. “As the population has grown, we have had more problems. We have had more drug activity. We have had more stragglers sleep ing in city park. We need to move toward providing more ser vices. We need officers on duty for more hours. As these things evolve, we need to evolve with them,” Bunn continued. Law enforcement has not been the only area where growth has caused issues. City hall is busier than ever, Grose reported. “As we have added more people there is more pressure on public works and city hall. We hired a proba tionary employee at city hall to fill in. We’ve grown and we’ve not been able to keep up,” she said. Councilman Rickey Fallings reported he has witnessed more speeders and suggested speed humps. Bunn noted speed humps would work in some areas but not on Liberty Hill Street which has become a vital traffic ar tery from Hwy. 36 East to Hwy. 41. Bunn is also looking at lowering speed limits in the city but warned it will be problematic. “DOT does not make it easy to lower speed limits,” he said. Grose said she plans to seek $60,000 in addi tional funding for public works and the police department in her next budget submission. Bunn noted his department has good relationships with the sheriff’s office, Barnes- ville’s police depart ment and the Gordon police department. “We back them up and they back us up,” the chief said. The council also dis cussed using cameras around the city for sur veillance. Bunn replied that cameras have their place but he would much rather have that money go toward ad ditional officers. “1 don’t want it to sound like we have big crime problems. We are still the same safe Milner. We’re just a little busier,” Bunn concluded. soccer camp Coaches from the Lamar County Recreation Depart ment will host a three-day summer soccer camp July 17-20 at the soccer complex off Academy Drive. The hours are 6-8 p.m. each day. There are only 40 spots available and the cost is $25. The fee includes a t- shirt if your child is regis tered by July 10. Workers were busy in Barnesville last week at various sites including Forsyth Street (above). Area amateur radio folks meet for ''field day' event Bill Bonner at his computer “ham station”. Central Georgia’s organization of amateur radio operators recently completed an annual “field day” event to dem onstrate how their radio communications function in emergencies when most other means of news may not work. Organized in 1933 by the National Association for Amateur Radio, the local area group is known as MCARS. Using radio stations the members set up in their homes or at the park area where the event was held, hams joined thousands of other operators in showing how connections are made in situations of disasters, said president Bill Bon ner of Barnesville. “Hams have a long history of serving our com munities when storms or other disasters damaged critical communication infrastructure, including cell towers,” said Bonner. Field day highlights ham radio’s ability to work reliably under any conditions, from almost any location, and create an independent wireless communications net work. Buggy Days t-shirt design contest returns The chamber of com merce is bringing back the Buggy Days t-shirt design contest and is seeking en trants and entries. Designs must be submitted by July 31 and based on the theme ‘awareness’. The winner will receive $250 and their design will be featured on the official festival t-shirt. Second place is a $100 prize with third place earning $50. Designs must be original and not infringe on any copyrights. They must be in full color and suitable for screen printing of the shirts.
