Pike Superior court convened in Zebulon Monday morning in its regular April term, his Honor, Judge E. J. Reagan, presiding. Court was opened promptly at 9 o’clock, a large number of at torneys and citizens being present. The grand jury, composed of many of the best and most intel ligent citizens of the county, met and elected Hon. John F. Mad den as its foreman. Judge Rea gan charged the grand jury briefly, referring to the various statutes required of him by the law, after which the work of the court was begun in earnest. The cases set for trial were taken up and a good part of the lirst day consumed in the suit of A. 0. Murphey and Hunt vs Central railroad. This is a case for dam ages, which has already been tried twice in the superior court and once in the supreme court and won everytime by the plaintiffs. The plaintiffs shipped a car of grapes in 1897, which were damag ed in transit. They brought suit for $435. The railroad is still fighting the case and their attor neys say that they will carry it to the supreme court of the United States. Railroads require the public to pay cash, but when the public gets anything out of the railroads, it ia uAuaily at the end of the law. Several divorce cases -were tried Monday and the cases set for the week proceeded with. Solictor Bloodworth announced Monday that the criminal docket would be taken up next Monday. A SHORT SESSION Judge Reagan announced in the beginning that he wanted to dis pose of all business in six days, instead of holding two weeks as is usual. He said he had been re quested by numerous citizens to hold only one week, and he would endeavor to dispose of all business within this time. Thus, court may adjourn today, until Monday and hold two or three days next week. THE ATTORNEYS PRESENT There were a large number of attorneys present, and it was a strong array of legal talent. Among the attorneys present were Cols. E. F. Dupree, A. B. Pope. C. R. Gwyn, G. D. Domineck, <'■> Zeb ulon, Cols. W. W. Lambdin, J. F. Redding, E. A. Steph ens, J. J. Rogers J. M. Smith and A. A. Murphey of Barnesville, Cols. M. W.'Beck, Loyd Cleve land, R. T. Daniel, T. E. Patter son and W. C. Becks, of Griffin, Col. J. Y. Allen and B. L. Tisin ger, of Thomaston, Cols. R. L. Berner and Persons, of Forsyth, and Judge John I. Hall, of Macon. All of these were interested in matters before the court and doubtless there will be others present during the session. PLEASANT AND EFFICIENT OFFICERS. Three of the most pleasant offi cers of the court are Col. 0. H. B. Bloodworth, the solicitor, Dr. J. B. Matthews the clerk and Mr. J. H. Milner, the sheriff. They were all kept constantly busy but they know how to dispose of business rapidly and generally keep right up with everything. NEW SOUTH SAVINOS’ BANK REPORT. Mr. T. W. Cochran, receiver, mode a report for the New South Savings Bank to the couit. He asked for an advancement of SI,OOO for himself, SSOO for Allen and Tisiriger, his counsel, and the payment of some expense accounts. Hunt, tax collector, the amount due for state and county taxes for 1901. CANDIDATES PLENTIFUL. The candidates for county offi cers are plentiful around the court, and of course they are all canvasing earnestly for support. You will find the announcements of the various candidates in this paper and we ask kindly consider ation for uhem. There are good citizens from whi* b to make your choice. Taylor ap peared before Judge Emory Speer in Macon last Saturday and asked for dismissal of the receiver for the Barnesville Manufacturing Cos. and Hanson-Crawley Cos. The re-organization plan was presented to the court, together with its ac ceptance by the various parties interested. After fixing the fees, and agreeing upon other matters, Judge Speer signed the order dis missing the receiver. Mr. C. B. Willingham, the re ceiver, was allowed the sum of $3,000 and the attorneys in tin l case were allowed the sum of $2,500. Other expenses of the receivership ran expenses up to $6,000 or more. This disposal is in accordance with the re-organi zation plan which has been so thoroughly discussed throughout this community and in which everybody has been more or less interested. A meeting of the stockholders of the properties has been called for Saturday, April 12th. at which time matters of uterest concern ing the husinesss will be further considered. It is hoped that the mills can begin operation at an early date, but all these matters will be decided upon later. It is only a question of time when the two mills will be running and earning good dividends. Rand Concert. The Barnesville Silver Cornet Band gave an open air concert Monday afternoon in front of W. C. Jordan & Bro’s. drug store. Several pieces were well rendered which shows that the baud is progressing rapidly. After the concert Mr. W. C. Jordan, the clever druggist, treated the boys •to soda which was greatly appre ciated. The band will next appear in public on memorial day when they will head the procession to the cemetery. A Sail Affair. Avery sad tragedy occured in Griffin Monday evening, in which Capt. W. B. Hudson shot Hon. J. J. Flynt and in turn was shot to death. The'trouble occurred on account of politics. Flynt was shot twice by Hudson, and after he had fallen, he shot Hudson four times. Hudson died in a few minutes and Flynt is now said to lie in a very critical condition, with the chances against his re covery. A Correction. In our notice about the Bartles ville Mercantile Cos. last week the types made us say that Mrs. P. H. Maddux was the senior member of the firm. The following is what we intended to say: “Messrs. P. H. Maddux, the senior member of the firm, and L. A. Collier and Leon Porch extend the public a cordial invitation to call to see theAi in their new quarters.” Doubtless nearly everybody no ticed the mistake and understood how it occurred but we desire to make this correction. Baseball. The Gordon Institute cadets and the Barnesville baseball teams crossed bats between the railroads Saturday afternoon. This being the first game of the season, quite u and was present. The game was not errorles. j any means as both teams were credited with many errors. This was the first time the local team appeared for practice and as they were de feated by a score of 20 to 7, it was no surprise for the cadets were in good practice. A game will be played next Sat urday between the teams and both teams will be in much better con dition. For Ilent. My house and lot on Holmes street, formerly occupied by J. G. Harris.
