Whitney, of Griffin, preached a very interesting sermon at the Presbyterian church Sunday. Cadet A. D. Jones returned Wednes day from Woodbury, where he has been the guest of relatives several days. Messrs. James Gardner and Schmitz Ferguson came down from Milner Mon day to join the Barnesville Blues on their trip to Albany. Mr. J. H. Blackburn has just had a nice ice cream cabinet put in at his soda fount and will serve ice cream and gems every day during the summer. Mr. Paris B. Cheek left yesterday morning for Valdosta, where he has ac cepted a lucrative position with a large firm. Mr. Cheek hus many friends in Barnesville who regret to see him leave, but wish him success in his new field. Col. A. A. Murphey will speak at Meansville Saturday night and at Williamson Monday night next in the interest of his candidacy for legislature. Picnic Party. (On Friday afternoon last, Mrs. J. M. Reeves entertained a party of friends with apicnicatCauthen Springs. The afternoon was balmy, and the woods and fields were full of scent-laden blossoms which were gathered by the gay party to decorate their spring wagon. A delightful lunch was served on the rocks overlooking the spring, and later on their return to town, they wore again refreshed at the soda fount. Those present were: Mrs. J. M. Reeves, Mrs. W. C. Stafford, Mrs. J. A. McCrary, Miss Mary Minhinnette, M iss Mary Cornell, and Miss May Seaman. Crosses of Honor. Those Veterans who have sent in their applications for Crosses of Honor will receive them Memorial day and are requested to be present. The Daughters of Confederacy will be pleased to see a large number of Veterans and their families attend the exercises, which will be in Gordon Institute Audito rium Friday afternoon, May ‘2. Evans on Elm street. Mr. Robert Holmes returned to Sparta, Thursday, where he has a posi tion with the Graves Banking Cos. Col. J. <2- Nash went down to Albany Friday to make arrangements for the cadets during their stay in that city. Mrs. A. J. Welimaker returned Fri day from Charleston, where she has been taking in the sights of the expo sition. Mrs. T. S. Griggs returned to her home in Thomaston Friday, after a several days visit to her sister here, Mrs. W. IF. Chambers. Mrs. Lutie Adams and daughter, Miss May, have returned home after a very pleasant visit to relatives and friends in Houston and Macon counties, Mr. W. J. Sykes, an old Confederate veteran, left Saturday for Dallas, Texas, where he will take in the re union. He will spend some days with the family of his son who lives in that state. Air. Fi. W. English left Thursday afternoon for Atlanta where he will be with Mr. Morris Jacobs in his new store. Mr. English has many friends here who are sorry to learn of his departure from our city. Mr. Morris Jacobs left Thursday for Atlanta where we will engage in the mercantile business. Mr. Jacobs has made many friends in Barnesville who regret to see him leave hut wish him success in his new field. . Air. and Mrs. T. W. Cochran left Fri day last for Texas, where they will spend several weeks on a visit to Dr. A. L. Cochran at Mineola. Their many friends wish a most delightful trip for them, which they will no doubt have. The Barnesville Silver Cornet Band gave an open air concert in front of Wright’s drugstore Monday afternoon. Quite a crowd collected and several pieces were well rendered. After the concert the band marched to the depot where they gave the soldier hoys a “send off.” Dr. George M. Rockwell and wife left last week for Texas where he will remain for some weeks visiting rela tives. For years he has been with Mr. John H. Blackburn’s drugstore and Is a man who has hosts of friends and no enemies. He will doubtless greatly enjoy his vacation in the great state of Texas. Airs. T. T. Smiley spent the day i Atlanta Tuesday. Air. J. R. Smith, of F'orsyth, was in the city Tuesday. Mr. Warren Smith visited relatives at Yatesville Sunday. Air. W. D. Berry went down to Macon yesterday to visit friends. Dr. and Mrs. E. T. Booth, of Thomas ton, were in the city Friday. Air. Huh LeSewer was in the city Saturday from Johnstonville. Air. Mr. Gibert Rossignol, of Savannah, arrived in the city Monday and will bo here several days. Air. and Airs. John E. Toole, of Thomasville, arrived in the city Alon day, being ealled here by the serious illness of Airs. Toole’s mother, Mrs. Jennie Williams. Rev. Thomas IKxon the well known lecturer passed through the city Sun day. Air. Dixon has appeared here twice at the Chautauqua and is quite well known liere. Airs. A. H. Flensley, of Griffin, who lias been visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Franklin, is now entertain ing a pretty little girl, to the delight of her many friends. We regret to chronicle the illness of Mrs. Jennie Williams who is very sick at her residence on Zebulon street. It is the wish of her many friends that she will have a speedy recovery.
