Write for Special Letter Giving Full Details. THE BARNESVILLE NEWS-GAZETTE, THURSDAY, JUNE 12, 1902. THE ROOSEVELT LIVERY. President Roosevelt lias adopted anew livery for his coachman and footman. It consists of the regula tion coat and trousers. The trou sers are very faint cream doeskin, cut to the knee, with patent leather .Wellington boots. The coat and vest are slashed with yellow and green, and the beaver hat is adorn ed with the tricolor cockade which was introduced early in this admin istration. This livery was used for the first time recently when the president drove to the depot on his way to distribute diplomas to the Annapolis cadets. The footman’s livery differs slightly from that of the coachman, as the coat is cut away almost to the extent of a swallowtail, and the skirts or spikes are very long. The effect is strik ing. The green and yellow trim mings are noticeable at.a distance. No other livery in the city is like this, and the good purpose is served in that the president’s equipage can be recognized at a distance merely by the livery of his attendants. Mark Twain and the Prince. While he was in England Mark Twain says his head was once taxed as gasworks. He wrote Queen Vic toria a friendly letter of protest, saying: “I don’t know you, but I’ve met your son. He was at the head of a procession in the Strand, and I was on a bus.” Years afterward he met the Prince of Wales, now King Edward VII., at Homburg. They had a long walk and talk together. When bidding him goodby, the prince said, “I am glad to have met you again.” This remark troubled Twain, who feared that he had been mistaken for someone else. He communi cated this suspicion to the prince, who replied, “Why, don’t you re member when you met me in the Strand and I was at the head of a procession and you were on a bus ?” Pingpong and Dissipation. Pingpong has at last fallen under the ban of the law keepers of Scot land. In the city of Dundee the po lice magistrates have decided that this latest fashionable game is det rimental to the morals of a sober city. It seems that all public houses of that town or nearly all have pro vided pingpong tables for their pa trons, and the custom of playing for drinks has grown so rapidly that the jails are not large enough to ac commodate all the victims df the game. Consequently, greatly arous ed by this sudden increase of intem perance, the magistrates have decid ed that henceforth pingpong may not bo played in places where liquor is sold. Bad Business Policy. “Don’t die!” she wailed when he was brought home to her after a collision with a trolley car. “I’ll try not to,” he answered. “I knew you would,” she said. “You are always so good and thoughtful, and you have such a head for business. You can’t af ford to die. Why, if you should the company would get off with the payment of a paltry $5,000, while if you live a cripple we may get as high as $50,000. Oh, it would be worse than folly to die under the circumstances.” —Chicago Post. Modesty of an Ameer. The late Ameer Abdur Itahman left behind him, we are told, copi ous diaries from which he directed his successor to extract and publish those portions which bore upon his private and domestic life, omitting all political questions. It is now to appear under the modest title of the “Encyclopedia of the World.” This is not so bad for an informal do mestic record even of an oriental potentate.—Madras Mail. Where Running Is a Crime. In the city of Hot Springs, Ark., running is a misdemeanor. Any person going faster than a walk is arrested and fined. This law is in the interest of invalids who throng the streets and suffer relapses from the excitement caused by the undue Imste of a stranger. One who runs is supposed to be a thief, murderer or escaped lunatic.—Exchange. No Compulsion. “Say, ma!” “Yes, Reginald.” “Kin any little boy be president when he grows up ?” “Yes, Reginald.” “But, say, ma.” “Yes, Reginald.” “He don’t have to if he’d ruther be a first base man, docs he?”—ln dianapolis News. A Literary Glimpse. During a recent visit of Marion Crawford to Xew York he met at a social function Miss Mary E. Wil kins. The lady 6aid something pleasant about a recent novel of his. Smiling and bowing, he asked, “And do you write, Miss Wilkins ?” She was absolutely too surprised to re ply.—Current Literature. THE BARNESVILLE CHAUTAUQUA. An Inter-Comity Teachers' Institute will be held in connection with the Chautauqua. About a dozen counties will combine in this work Besides the regular experts, a contract has already been closed with Prof. E. E. Utterbaek, probably the most notable directors of manual south, will have charge of this department of work. It will be a rare opportunity for the teachers of Georgia. This is u subject which is receiving attention from the leading educators and statesmen of America. Prof. Utterbaek will demonstrate what Manual Training really is, the position it should occupy and its true function as a factor in education. He will have drawing, painting, modeling, construction in paper, cardboard sewing and weaving. It is also practically certain that a Professor from John Hopkins University will deliver several lectures on physiology, and will be illustrated with life-size manakins and other drawings and charts, so as to make them plain and yet attractive. The examinations for teachers' license now includes questions on Physiology and this science must be taught in all public schools. These lectures are therefore timely and of inestimable value. A rate of one fan? for the round trip has been granted by the rail roads from all points in Georgia, and the ticket will include admis sion to the Chautauqua. The best homes in Bartlesville are open to all visitors at rates from 60 cents to SI.OO per day. The whole Chautauqua will be a marvelous treat for every Georgian.
