Which in the longest word in the English language? The con troversy on this subject may break out afresh over a note of Dr. Mur ray's in “The Oxford English Dic tionary.’’ lie points out that “in circumscriptableness” and “hou orificabilitudinity” both contain 22 letters, says the London News. Hut these are beaten by a word coined, or at least first used, by Dr. Henson, the late Archbisop of Canterbury, “Antidi-establish mentarians,” which contains us many letters as the alphabet, viz. 20. We think, however, we can go better thun this. For each of the above words an authority is given. Hut if “honorificabilitudi nity” be allowable, why not “hon orificabilitudinarians?’ This has 27 letters and 14 syllables, and we have seen the word used some where. After all, if it be allow - able to build up compound words on the German system, our lan guage has infinite possibilities in syllable-spinning. —Ex. VACATION DAYS. Culia is the name which the island was orignally known to the Lucayan Indians, who were with Columbus when he discovered it. One of its villages or cities was called by them Cuhanacan, and it is reported that from the similar ity of sounds of Columbus, still supposing himself to be on the; coast of Asia imagined that this must be the city of Kubia Khan, the Tartar sovereign celebrated by Marco Polo. The survival of the original name for Cuba is a re markable instance of persistence, j as the island has been baptized and rebaptised many times since its European discovery Columbus lirst culled it Suana, in honor of Prince John, the son of Ferdi nand and Isabella. After Fredi naud’s death it was called in his memory, Fernandina subsequent ly, this name was changed to Santiago, after St. James, the patron saint, of Spain. Still later it was named Ave Maria, in honor of the Virgin Mary. But none of these names held, and the Indian name is still preserved. — Literary Era. DON’T FAIL TO TRY THIS. ' The following notice from the Montgomery Advertiser will be read with interest by the friends' of the one named. Mr. Lifsey is a son of post-master Lifsey of this place and is well known to many of our people, having form erly reaidedhere. His friends will be glad to know that he is doing so well and winning such high praise from the road officials, with whom he is connected. “The enormous crowds that went on the recent excursion from here to Tampa, Fla., holds the record for excursion business and Division Passenger Agent Lifsey of the Plant System has cause to be proud of it. Before the excur sion la-t week the biggest one ever i run was one that Mr. Lifsey brought from Thomasville to Montgomery five years ago, and he says that within the next few weeks he intends bringing a crowd from Thomasville here as large, if not larger than the first. Speak ing of the Tampa excursion a Tampa paper says: “Municipal Judge Harry Peeples met W. V. Lifsey, the Plant Sys tem excursions record-breaker, vesterday afternoon, and two old acquaintances exchanged greet ings. “ ’You’re a good excursion man, Lifsey,” said the judge, “I was somewhat frightened when I first h. rd about your present excursion and for fear that it might include! South Carolina and bring down several hundred relatives and friends to visit me. 1 got. out of town on the day the record-break ing crowd arrived. Hut when ■ Gordon Keller, assured me that the cheap-rate was limited to Alabama and Georgia, 1 came back and have been enjoying myself watching my fellow-citizens en tertain their sisters, cousins and aunts.’ “ ‘By the way,’ continued the Judge I want to pay a tribute to your big excursion crowd that I haven’t seen noted in the papers us yet. Out of the twenty-six hundred strangers in the city, not one of them have been before me in the police court. It has been the most orderly, best-behaved crowd I ever knew, and I want to congratulate you on bringing such good people to Tampa.’ Mr. Lifsey yesterday received a telegram from B. V. Wrenn, pas senger traffic manager of the Plant System, which, coming from that source, must .be considered extra ordinarily high praise Mr. Wrenn wired: ‘Congratulate 3 r ou on this excursion; it is the best in the history of the company.’ ” BE WISE IN TIME. Many parents do not know that their cHld is sickly and cross and fretful, simply because they fail to give it some of that splendid remedy called Mother’s Worm Syrup, to kill and expel from its little stomach and bowels the worms, that are the cause of its distress. Worms have brought many a little loved one to a bed of sickness and to its grave that a 25 cent bottle of this remedy would have saved. Miss Azaline Earl, formelv of Portland, but latterly a “hello girl” of San Francisco, is now Mrs. William Halleck Denting, will travel in Europe with her husband this summer, says the Portland Oregonian. Mr. Denting, who is ” man of wojilth, was attrac ted by her soft and gentle voice in calling “Number?” through the telephone, and acquaintance and marriage followed. If the voices of the telephone girls in this city have lately become indistinct though muffled sweetness, the above announcement accounts for it.” Gray ? “My hair was falling out and turning gray very fast. But your Hair Vigor stopped the falling and restored the natural color.’’—Mrs. E. Z. Benomme, Cohoes, N. Y. It’s impossible for you not to look old, with the color of seventy years in your hair! Perhaps you are seventy, and you like your gray hair! If not, use Ayer’s Hair Vigor. In less than a month your gray hair will have all the dark, rich color of youth. SI.M • Ml*. The >laternal Influence. “One thing really vexes me”’ said the mother of a debutante daughter to a reporoer, “ and that is to have the opinion of her silly little contemporaries carry more weight with my Mable than my own. ‘Mab’ is a well brought up child, and has a pretty deferential manner when listening to my ideas, but I know all the while she is wondering what Edith M. or Elsie N. will say on the subject, and it is their approval that is the test. It may be the question of a hat or a gown, or even of a love. Everything concerning a girl of that age is submitted to the test of public opinion as voiced by chits of eighteen or twenty. It is annoy ing enough when this censorship is exercised only in clothes, etc., hut when it concerns people it becomes really serious. There is is no doubt about it that an ad vantageous match has often been spoiled by these sharp little tongues that are no respecters of of persons, and many a girl who would, if let alone, fall in love and marry in the good old-fash ioned way, has literally not dared to evince a preference for a man her friends choose to make fun at. Men do not realize this, and they often make a great mistake in ig noring the friends of the girl that takes their fancy, for these friends can make or mar a young man’s fortune if they feel so disposed. “It is always worth while to gain the good will of every one as far as it is possible, but never more so than to make a friend in stead of a foe of an attractive girl’s most intimate friend.” SAVES A WOMAN’S LIFE. To have giver up would have meant death for Mrs Louis Cragg.of Dorches ter, Mass. For years she had endured untold misery from a severe lung trou ble and obstinate cough. “Often,” she writes, “I could scarcely breathe and sometimes could not speak. All doctors and remedies failed till I used Dr. King’s New Discovery for consumption and was completely cured.” Sufferers from coughs, colds, throat and lung trouble need this grand remedy, for it never disappoints. Cure is guaranteed by W. A. Whight. Price sCte and SI.OO. Trial bottle free. it seems that the centennial of trousers is to be passed without any sort of celebration to mark the incident. By the way, it would be interesting to know if those Texans who recently applauded ex-Gov Hogg so enthu siastically for refusing to wear knee-breeches in London and thus have the oppotunity of dining with the king, are imformed with respect to the origin of trousers. It apears, according to reliable information, that trousers or pan taloons, are of royal establish ment, “planted in fashion.” the New York World says.“by George IV, as regent, by his ducal asso ciates and certain French princes. They were primarily designed to cover the mischief wrought by gout to the ankles and calves of the aristocratic highlivers of a century ago. The peasantry of many European countries have steadfastly adheared to Ktiicker- Bockers, but in this country the democracy has siezed upon trou sers and refuses to be parted therefrom, even for the distine j tion of dining with the king.—Ex.
