Guatemala's National Bird
The republic of Guatemala dec
orates its coat of arms, its stamps
and its official documents with the
picture of a beautiful parrot. The
bird is of a rich green color, with
tufted head and a long tail, which
frequently grows to a length of 4
or 5 feet.
It is found only in the forests
of Guatemala. The green parrot
quetzal, as it is called, has been
made the national emblem of
Guatemala, just as the American
eagle has become the national em
blem of the United States.
The Guatemalans are very proud
of their national bird; have written
many songs and poems about it.
The parrot was selected for the
national emblem because it was
found very bard to catch, and tra
dition says that when once im
prisoned it always kills itself
rather than remain in captivity.
The Guatemalans say that this
bird which so skillfully eludes
capture and dies rather than sur
render, is typical of their own
country and its people.
The quetzal lives in the wildest
parts of the mountains, and never
visits the neighborhood of the
towns or cities. The only parrots
ever brought out of the forests are
caught by the native Indians.
The parrots are too wary to be
caught in a trap. The Indians
first watch the parrots sometimes
for days at a time until they dis
cover their haunts. Then they
smear the limbs of surrounding
trees with thick glue.
The parrot perches on the sticky
limb, and is held fast. The na
tives remove the bird from the
limbs by the simple expedient of
cutting off their feet.
No parrot has ever been brought
from its forest home alive. They
struggle desperately when caught,
and when they find they cannot
escape they kill themselves, so it
is declared.
The natives say that the birds
always commit suicide in the same
way, by pecking at their breasts
until the jugular vein is exposed.
A final peck severs the artery and
and the bird quickly bleeds to
death. The quetzal dies, hut nev
er surrenders.
The green parrot stuffed, but
with its feet missing, is to he
found in natural history museums
all over the world, llut no one
has ever succeeded in keeping a
specimen alive in captivity—New
York Sun.
TO MY FRIENDS.
It is with joy I tell you what Kodol
did for me. I was troubled with my
stomach for several months. Upon
being advised to use Kodol, I did so,
and words cannot tell the good it has
done me. A neighbor had dyspepsia
so that he had tried most everything.
I told him to use Kodol. Words of
gratitude have come to me from him
because I recommended it —Geo. W.
Fry, Viola. lowa. Health and strength
of mind and body, depend on the
stomach, and normal activity of the
digestive organs. Kodol, the great
reconstructive tonic, cures all stomach
and bowel troubles, indigestion, dys
pepsia. Kodol digests all the food
you eat. Take a dose after meals.

Cream Cheese and Fruit.
A cream cheese to be served with
fruit is made light by beating up
the cheese with a little olive oil.
When it is soft and light, it is
pressed into shape again before it
is cut into pieces for serving. It
should be sliced about an inch thick
and served on a pjate with a spoon
ful of whipped cream on it and a
spoonful of gooseberry or currant
jam at the side.
New Rainbow Glass.
There are many dainty vases in
what used to be called rainbow
glass. Some of the prettiest shapes
are in the small vases large enough
for one or two flowers. An odd
vase that stands in little danger of
breaking has a bulb of solid glass
as its base, long and slender stem
holding just enough water for one
flower. This, however, i3 in plain
glass. ,

Next Leap Year.
The next leap year will occur in
1904. The Julian method of inter
calation supposed the year to lie
eleven minutes fourteen seconds
too long. This makes a day on 128
years. At the time of the council
of Nice, in 825, the equinox, which
fell on March 25, when the calen
dar was introduced, was found to
fall on March 21, and when the
reformation of the calendar was
made in 1522, the equinox to its
proper place Pope Gregory XIII
directed that ten days be suppress
ed in the calendar; and as tho
error of the Julian intercalations
was found to be throe days m 400
years, he ordered the intercala
tions to be omitted on all centen
ary years excepting those which
are multiples of 400. According
to the to the Gregorian rule of
intercalation, therefore, every
year of which the number is divis
ible by four, without a remainder
is a leap year, excepting the een
turial years, which are only years
when divisible by four, after omit
ting two ciphers. Thus 1600 was a
leap year, but 1700, 1800 and 1900
common years; 2<XXJwill be a leap
year, and so on.

Ao Ancient Draughtboard.
What is described as an “ancient
draughtboard” has been discovered
in Crete. It must by all accounts be
a fine piece of work, since it is com
posed of natural crystal, ivory, gold
and silver, but it is by no means
unique. Chess, draughts or the
game from which both are derived
was known to nearly all the ancient
civilizations, and Greek and Egyp
tian hoards are hy no means un
common.
Both Attractive.
