Hughes, Coburg, Germany, is informed that German cotton manufacturers are intending to make trial of a discovery whereby cotton and other similar highly inflamable materials can be rendered permanently fireproof. With the exception of explosives, there is no article that Hares up so quickly as cotton when it comes into contact with a light, especial ly in those particular goods which are made of hoavv yarns and “combed out” ou both sides in order to give the appearance of flannel. The fireproofing process consists of “asbestinizing” the fabrics, by which means permanent immunity from burning is assured, but the exact manner in which it is aeheiv ed is not divulged. “Asbestine fabrice” can be washed again and again and yet retain their non ignit&blequality. From this it will be seen that the process does not consist in merely putting upon the material a chemical that for the t ime being rendered it lion-inllam able, but rather, as in the case of mercerizing, in changing the very character of the material. “Asbcst inized” clothes are said to be perfectly hygienic, and can be safely worn next to the skin. What does it. profit a woman if she gain the whole world of know ledge and lose her own health? Young women students, and school teacher*, eager, ambitious, and full of energy, very often neglect their healtn in the struggle to gain education. They eat insuflicent food, and at irregular hours, they allow irregularity of the womanly functions to he established, and the result is that they become chronic invalids with all their education practically worthless. There is a plain road back to health for such as these, marked by the *feet. of thousands. It is the use of Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery for diseases of the stomach and digestive and nutri tive organs, and Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription for diseases of the delicate organs of woman hood. A cure so certainly follows the use of these remedies that out of hundreds of thousands who have tried the treatment, ninety eight in every hundred have been perfectly and peranently cured. Constipation, with its calamitous consequences, which is a common ailment of students, can be entire ly cured by the use of Dr. Pierce’s Pleasant Pallets. THE BABNESVILLE iJpifs-GAZETTE, THURSDAY. NOVEMBER 18, 1902 ——————— by his friends hero: We are not ten thousand leagu es under the sea, but we ft* - ® near ly that far from the red| of the world. Mindanao is called the most healthful of all the Philippines, water considered the best, and we are said to be out of the cholera belt. You know we have just been ordered from Malabang to camp No. 7. It is a short march of six miles, but as this was our first experience we made very slow time. In fact, we were two hours on the trail, but I did en joy every moment of the time. The trail up to Camp Vilckars has been made by the soldiers. It is supposed to be 22 miles. The brush, ruins and trees have been cut away a hundred feet on either side, and the road itself is 18 feet wide. There has been a world of work done, and two worlds more to do. I have been told that a large sum of money had been ap propriated to construct the road from Thesea up to Lake Lanao, where there are thousands] of Moros, but it is absolutely im possible to get any of these peo- pie to work and out men have it all to do. This is, notwithstand ing out long stay in the West In dies and at Luzon, the first time I have ever truly seen a tropical country. Nature is perfectly glo rious, green, grand and beautiful. In this part of the island you find all the huge hardwood trees, ma hogany enough to make all the old and new furniture we wanted, vines, trees, ferns, palms, birds and monkeys in unlimited quanti ties. The first monkey I saw I looked for the old Italian and hand organ, hut since then I have seen hundreds, twenty or more playing in trees in full view* of my tent. I think the monkeys are the only inhabitants who seem to enjoy their station out here, but they have fun enough to make up for us, and they play like folks. There is any quantity of fine game right around our camp; fine hunting. I had a shot at a big deer and boar, but missed both, as it was so dark. We have some fine hunters in our company. We have had in a few days time three fine deer, and they have just | brought in a big hoar. How all the men do enjoy it; fine eating, it is. Nothing half so good in the hotels in Atlanta. We also have wild chickens; did you ever i hear of that before? When you ! awake in the morning you might think you were in Newman, Ga., from the amount of crowing one hears. I thought we had certainly run into plenty of Moros on account lof the roosters, but I was very much mistaken, for these chick | ens belonged to God alone ; man had no claims. I have been so anxious to hunt them, hut the forests are so thick, such a jungle, you run a great risk going a hun dred yards from the camp. Our camp site is very pretty; looks as though some years ago it was the bed of a stream. The trail up to Camp Vicars bounds us on one side. On all others we are wall ed in by a most dense tropical forest. We have thirty tents pitched : looks like a pretty little city. Our inhabitants are one hundred and twenty in number. The officers are: Captain Wilder, Mackul and myself, a doctor, one hospital and signal corps man. j Our social life, you will imagine, ;is not very gay; haven’t had a I “German” as yet, but truly camp life is very attractive. But hea vens! the earthquakes. That is one thing this island is heir to. to which I am not at all partial. sftttcura J^esolrent PIUS CUTICURA RESOLV ENT PILLS (Chocolate Coated, 60 doses, 25c.), are a new, tasteless, odourless, economical substitute for the celebrated liquid CUT I - RESOL 1 TNT, as well as for all other blood purifiers and humour cures. My first shock came one evening when I had gone out to shoot a wild boar just back of our kitchen. They home up about night hunt ing food. I shot, and when I found myself rolling and bounc ing around over the ground like a tennis ball, I thought all the boars on the island had concluded to give me a “nightoff.” I vain ly endeavored to get on my feet, but could not, and we have had these awful shocks some several times a day. A lot of damage has been done; rivers have changed their course, springs have dried up, and parts of mountains split off. The cable to Zamboango has been broken, so we cannot hear from the outside world. No city could have stood the shocks we have had. I must not fail to tell you how strange it seems when we are so very near the equator that it should he so cool and delight ful ; about like October days at dear old Tallulah Falls. We are high up with river and falls very like Tallulah. I sleep under two heavy blankets every night, and the soldiers all wear their blue shirts. We were all heart-broken when the General left us out of the troops who were taken to Camp Vickers to engage in the fight to dislodge the Moros. Graham L. Johxson. THE WAT Pride of Bartlesville Flour is Made. FIRST: We buy the finest wheat-possible to secure, and tributary to Nashville is grown the finest wh at in the world for producing flour to make buscuit, light bread and pastry. NEXT: We scour and clean the wheat thoroughly in one of the most complete and perfect plants for this purpose it is possible to obtain, realizing that if the dirt is not removed before-grinding, it cannot be afterwards, as it reduces as fine as the flour, and will pass through the finest bolting cloths. This process of cleaning and scouring takes out all the foreign substance, and even the dirt in the crease Of the grain, which is extremely hard to get rid of, and also removes the woody fibre from the end of the wheat, which few mills ever attempt to take off. The wheat having been perfectly scoured and cleaned goes through the latest impioved roller and plan sifter mill in the country, end during this process is most carefully watched over by a miller of twenty-five years experience. We do not try to make the greatest possible amount of First Patent, but only that pro portion which insures the highest quality of both First and Second grades. We also make low grade flour, but do not quote it, as it > oes into our Ship Stuff. Cleaning our wheat so perfectly before grinding makes very expensive milling; that is, it increases the cost of the flour so much that it must he sold for a little more money than when made in the ordinary vay. We concluded, though, some time ago there was enough trade in our territory that would appreciate the very fine t, purest and most nutritious flour to take the output of a mill of our capacity making this class of goods at the slight increased cost, and judging from our lnrge sales and many voluntary letters of praise for flour received daily from customers since w r e began milling on this plan, we made no mistake. Only a few days ago one of our regular customers dropped in to see us -while in the city on his way East and remarked that he had no trouble in getting 25 cents per barrel n ore for our flour than for the corresponding grade made by other mills. We showed him through our plant, and he was surprised to see how perfectly we cleaned the grain. We also took him through our Cooking Department . In this we have an old time colored cook, Aunt Virginia, v. ho bakes the flour and meal, which is taken from the packers in our mill every two hours night and day; thus making it impossible for inferior flour and meal to go out without our discovering it. This insures perfect uniformity of our goods, as we know exactly what we are making at all times. It would do you good to see some of the biscuit and corn bread Aunt Virginia sends into out office almost hourly each day. Nothing could he prettier, purer or better. We dislike to talk about other mills, but for our mutual interest we want to tell you how many of them make their flour. But few of them even attempt to grind the finest wheat, claiming they can make flour cheaper out of low grades. We admit that they can do this, and they can sell it, too, often easier than we can ours at tile slight advance we ask, but we ari sure it is not so good, white, pure, swete and wholesome. It contains dirt and other non-nutritious substances. At a casual glance it may sometimes look as white as ours, but wfien it so appears, on close examination, it will be seen to have a bluish cast, this being conclusive evidence that it contains but little which is the strength or nutritious paid of the wheat, and is of a creamy color. By grinding poor wheat, and using but little and often poor cleaning machinery, tiiey get more flour [or rather more flour and dirt combined], and at a decreased cost. We though, think if every customer could see the dirt, etc , which we take out and many other mills grind, thejr would not object to paying a little more for our flour.
