He had sickness from the cradle to the grave, but his mighty spir it conquered pain and subdued the flesh in many tribulations. He might, as a great lawyer, have accumulated riches, but he lavish ly spent all of his in boundless hospitality, education of needy young men, and constant alms. He was a renowned orator, but he wus an oracle of what he deemed eternal principles, and nota cour ier or demagogue. He was in the. highest sense a statesman, and his every effort was for the preserva tion constitutional liberty. He had strong antipathies but learned to reverse revenge. He had the valor of a lion in the frailest of human tabernacles, but his heart went out to the poor prisoners behind the jail bars and he believed them less guilty than many who were free upon the streets. He was rocked with disease, sorrowful in spirit , and for long years crippled, but he was a prodigy of labor and left behind a monumental and in vincible defense of the Southern people and their cause. He was opposed to secession, but never faltered in his determination to sink or swim with his state. Benson, when getting his usual Saturday night bath, stepped hack against a hot stove which burned him severely. The child was in great agony and his mother could do nothing to pacify him. Remembering that she had a bottle of Chamberlin’s Pain Bahn in the house, she thought she would try it. In less than half an hour after applying it the child was (piiet and asleep, and in loss than two weeks was well. Mrs. Benson is a well known resident of Keller, Va. Pitt Evans, born and raised near the picturesque waters of the Tielegge river in Monroe county, but of late years a resi dent of Barnesville, is known throughout this sect ion of Georgia as a famous hunter, and lie deserv es the name rightly. Several times recently we have seen him returning from his favorite hunting grounds in Pota to Creek swamps with irun on his shoulder and a goodly supply of game slung to his belt. Early in his boyhood he learn ed to mimmiek the turkey, the owl, and many other birds and animals of the forest, and his wonderful powers in this art serve him well to the present day, hence his great success in bag ging a liberal supply of game. Mr. Evans has to his credit, within a month, the killing of many cat squirrels, several large owls, one of them weighing ten pounds, and last but not least, a turkey gobbler t ipping she scales at 21 pounds. THE f A LIGHT IN THE WINDOW. i The British Medical Institute, Located at 354 Second St., Macon, Oa.,\Vill Give Free Services for Three Mont Its to All 1 n valids Who Call Before Dec., sth. Fast living, yielding to the despotic demand of modern society and close application to hard mental and man ual labor, are several causes which are wrecking the constitutions of thous ands of Americans every yearl Eighty per cent of those afflicted are enduring the pangs of mental misery which unfit them for the duties of life. These people are despondent, dejected, discouraged, troubled with insomnia, shun society, distrust old friends, ab hor new ones; with them the vigor of youth is a thing of the past; many of them have paid large amounts of money in vain for a cure. The British Medi cal Institute has a light in the window for all such invalids. During the past five years it has treated and cured 18,- 864 cases, and eighty-five per cent of them were cases of this kind. It guaran tees a complete cure in every case it undertakes; it is incorporated under the laws of the state of Michigan, with a paid up'capital of $60,000, there its guarantee is good. It treats and cures male and female weakness, catarrh and catarrhal deaf ness ; also varicocele, rupture, goitre, cancer, morphine habit and all diseas es of the rectum. At its Macon branch, located at 354 Second St., has given free service to all invalids who called during the past twelve months, and it will continue giving free services for three months longer (medicines excepted) to all who call before Dec. sth. The chief associate surgeon of the Institute is in personal charge of the Macon office. Office hours :9 a. m. to Bp. m. Sun days, 10 a. m. tcrl p. m. If it goes out quickly, the weather will be fair. The twelve days after Christmas indicate the weather for the fol lowing year. Each day in order shows the weather for one month. When it begins to snow, notice the size of the Hakes. If they are very tine, the storm will be a long one; if large, the storm will soon be over. If the chickens come out while it rains, it is a sign that the storm is to be a long one. If they stand around under the shed, the storm will be short. When the cattle lie down as soon as they are turned out to pasture in the morning, it is be cause they feel a rheumatic weari ness in their bones, and you can look for rain soon. When a night passes and no dew falls, it is a sign it isgoingto rain. This omen loses much of mystery when one remembers that dew has not fallen because the night was clouded. When you see the sun drawing water at night, know that it will rain on the morrow. The sun is said to be drawing water when its rays can be seen shining through rifts in distant clouds.—Ex. Bp*; - Wr, . ■ Hiccoughs of three years staud i ing were yesterday cured at the Bellevue Hospital with a bit of string. Miss Sarah Blaokson, a young Russian girl, of No 78 Reade street, went to the hospital, complaining that for the last twelve months she had been suffering from hic coughs. She said she had at last begun to grow tired of the malady. The phpsicians examined her and gave it as their opinion that her affection was largely nervous. She had the symptoms of neurastne nia. From all that could be learned of her case, it appeared she was subject to spells of melan cholia, and when once she acquir ed the notion that she could not •top hiccoughing she would sit in her home waiting for the recurring spasms. She had been an invalid, or at least was considered enough of one to be free from all toil and occupation. Miss Blackson said she had been told it would be neccessary to have an operation in order to prevent her from hiccoughing her life away, and she had walked to Belle vue with the idea that within an hour she would be on the operat ing table. Miss Blackson was taken to ward 22. The physicians tied about her waist a cord so tightly that the spasmodic movement of the diphram were controlled. After ten minutes the cord was romoved and the voung woman was told she was cured. The manner of the physicians were either so convincing or the cure was so radical that from that moment she ceased to be dis turbed. Miss Blackson was taken to the Metropolitan Hospital and she has not hiccoughed since her arrival on Blackwell’s Island. She will be treated there with' a view of building up her constitution and curing the nervous malady from which she suffers. The phy sicians say that if she keeps her mind off the subject the relief is likely to be permanent. —New York Herald. ONE MINUTE COUGH CURE Is the only harmless cough cure that gives quick relief.
