BARNESVILLE, GA., THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1903. THE REGITAL A SUCCESS. THK AVEATHKK BAD BUT ATTEN DANCE WAS GOOD. THK PROGRAM SPLENDID. The recital Friday evening at the opera house by Rev. Robert Hugh Morris, under the auspices of the Knights of Pythias, was an enjoyable entertainment. The weather was quite disagreeable, but there was a good crowd pre sent. In a few appropriate words, Dr. J. A. Corry introduced Rev. Mr. Morris, who was the princi pal attraction for the evening. The entertainment was a genuine success and there has been a gen eral desire to have it repeated sometime soon, when it could be more largely attended. All of the numbers were enjoyed, but those of a dramatic character were particularly fine. Mr. Mor ris certainly possesses ability of a high order and his efforts will be appreciated by any critical audi ence. All who attended wei*e highly pleased, and are under obligation to the Knights of Pyth ias for the pleasure of the occa sion. A vocal solo by Mrs. Mary Bow den Smith was a pleasant feature of the entertainment. A nice little sum was realized from the entertainment, which goes into the K. of P. treasury. Will Begin Business. On the 16th of this month the firm of Collier & Ogletree will commence operations in the build ing now occupied by Mr. W. K. Wilkinson, on which they have secured a lease. They will put in a first class stock of dry goods, and notions, in fact everything that should de kept in an up-to-date store of this kind. Both of these gentlemen are known to the trading public that comes to Barnesville and we will predict success for them from the start. Read their advertise ment in this issue and all during the year. The Immune Rank of Vaccinated Brotherhood. A lodge of the above secret order was formed in this city about two weeks since and a number of the brethren are undergoing the de grees necessary to become mem bers of the noble society. The initiation fee is paid by the city and the service perform ed by the physicians of the city, all of whom are now members. It takes about three weeks to finish the course of initiation. None have entirely finished the term, although some think they see their finish. The vaccinated arm is “a thing of beauty and a joy forever,” and woe be unto the person who shall be so careless as to lay ruth less hands upon an afflicted mem ber for vials of wrath shall be poured out upon his or her head, as the case may be. A meeting of the order will be called in a few days, as soon as all the members are able to get out again and officers will be elected, by-laws chosen and so on. Dr. J. A. Corry has been spoken of as chief vaccinator, Mr. D. L. An derson, secretary and treasurer and Mr. Pierce Hammond as main arm (or) bearer. The lodge is one of the most progressive and flourishing in this city and new members are being added every day. The motto of the club is: “We never sleep.” CADETS GET COMMISSION. Gov. J. M. Terrell has issued commissions to the officers of the Gordon Institute Cadets, in accor dance with the provisions of the new military law. The commissions issued bo the cadets were the first to be issued by Gov. Terrell, and they are very highly appreciated by these young men. It is appropriate that Gordon Insti tute, thg best school in Georgia, should be the first to recieve this honor. ? The officers receiving commis sions are Captains Henry Coving ton, Charles Kelley and A. H. Reppard. First Lieutenants Cliff Curry, Gteorge Babb, Bayard Tay lor and Julian Arnold. Second Lieutenants Terrell Covington and Edward Howard. Their hosts of friends are ex tending congratulations. ix. Mr. Otis A. Murphy Won the Prize. Thursday last Mr. Otis A. Mur phy received a handsome gold watch as the prize for the agent writing the most business for the Maryland Life Insurance Com pany for the three months ending Dec. 81th 1902. The contest was entered into by a largo number of the agents of this Company in about six states, and it speaks well for Mr. Murphy’s ability and popularity as a hustling insurance writer. He eairies one of the largest in surance pisinesses in this section of the w The watch is a very beautiful solid gold one with his monogram engraved upon the case, and he is to be congratulated on being in possession of such a valuable article of jewelry. Complimented Friends Mrs. S. P. Neely entertained informerly a small number of the young people of the city last Tues day night at a “Flinch” party at her home on Zebulon street. The occasion was an exceedingly enjoyable one for those who at tended and the young people amused themselves at “flinch” for several hours, the games being interspersed with delightful music by Mrs Neely. The affair was voted an unusually pleasant one by the happy crowd. Blanton Institnte. WILL GO TO ZEBULON, AS LIB ERAL DONATIONS AHE OFFERED. The Wm. Blanton Institute, which was to have been located at Mt Zion camp grounds, in this county, according to the original plans, will be carried to Zebulon instead. The citizens of that progressive little town are exceed ingly desirous to secure it and are taking active steps in that direc tion, in which they have the sym pathy of a number of the board of directors. They have held a meeting, at which it was decided to offer the Jeff Davis institute building, originally costing $2,000, with its three or four acres of ground, and SISOO in money.
