President Ingalls of the Big Four
road writes an execrable hand, and
a farmer living near Springfield, 0.,
is glad of it. One day Mr. Ingalls
was riding over a division of the
road and came within smelling dis
tance of a particularly emphatic
hog pen owned by the farmer. Next
day he wrote an autograph letter to
the agriculturist, complaining of
the hog pen. The farmer could not
read a word of it and showed the
missive to a Big Four agent. The
latter could not make anything out
of it either, but said it looked like
the passes sometimes issued by
President Ingalls. This was a sug
gestion to the farmer, who declares
that he made several trips on the
road, using the illegible scrawl as a
pass, before conductors discovered
that it was a protest instead.

Of the periodic pain which many women
experience with every month it makes
the gentleness and kindness always as
sociated with womanhood seem to be
almost a miracle. While in general no
woman rebels against what she regards
as a natural necessity there is no woman
who would not gladly be free from this
recurring period of paki.

► A LITTLE NONSENSE. -
Why the Doctor Failed to Cure His
Patient.
A Macclesfield man was in r very
bad way of health. After much anx
ious thougirtrhe determined to con
sult a doctor.
The latter, after a most minute
examination, pronounced the patient
to be suffering from a sever* form
of dyspepsia and prescribed for him
accordingly, lie was very particular
in giving full directions ns to diet.
A light breakfast—eup of cocoa,
dried toast and other simple fare;
plain dinner—chop, no potatoes,
glass of claret and 'only one cigar
per day. Tie was most careful to
impress the fact upon the patient’s
mind that the one cigar should'nev
er be exceeded.
The patient went away and re
turned in a week worse than ever.
The doctor was nonplused.
Upon inquiries he found that the
man had most faithfully carried out
all his instructions to the letter.
“I know what it is,” replied the
man of “You’ve.had more
than one cigar a day. iFt’s the smok
ing that’s done it.”
“Yes, I know that, doctor. It is
the smoking, hut I’ve only had ono
cigar at a time, and that was quite
enough, for I never smoked in my
life until you told me to!”— Tit-
Bits.
Touching.
“Mine is a touching tale,” mur

sigh.
“Consider me touched,” said the

The Poor Young Man and the Bilker.
“Mr. Awlcasb,” said the trembling
young man in the threadbare suit of
clothes, “1 have come to ask you for
the band of your daughter.’
The rich banker wheeled around
in his chair and looked at the pre
sumptuous youth.
“Henry,” he said kindly, “you can
have her, and I will see that* ohe
supports you in better style than
you have been accustomed to.” —

Over-Work Weakens
Your Kidneys.
Unhealthy Kidneys Make Impure Blood.
All the blood In your body passes through
your kidneys once every three minutes.
fThe kidneys are your
blood purifiers, they fil
ter out the waste or
impurities in the blood.
If they are sick or out
of order, they fail to do
their work.
Pains, aches and rheu
matism come from ex
cess of uric acid in the
blood, due to neglected
kidney trouble.
Kidney trouble causes quick or unsteady
heart beats, and makes one feel as though
they had heart trouble, because the heart is
over-working in pumping thick, kidney
poisoned blood through veins and arteries.
It used to be considered that only urinary
troubles were to be traced to the kidneys,
but now modern science proves that nearly
all constitutional diseases have their begin
ning in kidney trouble.
If you are sick you can make no mistake
by first doctering your kidneys. The mild
and the extraordinary effect of Dr. Kilmer’s
Swamp-Root, the great kidney remedy is
soon realized. It stands the highest for Its
wonderful cures of the most distressing cases
and is sold on its merits
