PIMENTO PLANT IN
THE UNITED STATES
(By Jack L. Patterson)
The citizens of Spalding county,
always progressive and prosperous,
are setting a lively pace in the de
velopment of a practically new in
dustry, the’ production and canning
of select pimento peppers, for
which there is a constantly increas
ing demand throughout the United
States.
The pioneer sweet pepper growers
in the South are S. I). Reigel &
Sons, of Experiment, and Wayman
& Reigel, of Pomona, fruit growers
and truck farmers. The first sweet
pepper seed were ordered from Spain
by S. I). Reigel, who spent a number
of years in perfecting improved va
rieties that have gained extensive
popularity. The Pomona Products
Company, organized and operated
for several years by Wayman & Rei
gel, was later aesuired by anew
firm, of which Roswell H. Drake,
president of the Griffin National
Bank, is president; D. F. Patterson,
a prominent wholesale grocer, vice
president and W. L. Greafe, Secre
tary and general manager.
The original plants have been aban
doned and anew one installed in
Griffin representing an investment
of $50,000. This plant, with day
and night superintendents and shifts,
affords employment for more than
250 people, the capacity being one
7-ounce can every second. It re
quires 2,000 bushels of peppers for
a day’s operation.
Africa district, forming the north
ern division of Spalding county, the
home of S. D. Reigel & Sons and
Wayman & R'eigel, is leading in the
culture of sweet peppers, while
Spaulding produces more pimento
peppers than any other county in the
United States. The varieties are
superior to the choicest products of
Spain, the pioneer country in the
culture of sweet peppers and pi
mento peppers.,
The interest of motorists traveling
the Dixie highway in Spalding coun
ty is ttracted by hundreds of acres
of growing peppers, red and beauti
ful for the harvest. The product is
gathered and sold to the canning
company in bulk at S4O a ton. The
average yield is about three tons an
acre, but expert farmers experience
no difficulty in securing double that
amount. The minimum yield, how
ever, guarantees a substantial profit.
The seed are planted in bed in
February and should be set out in
3 1-2 foot rows not later than April
15th. The harvest season opens
about the Ist of August and con
tinues until the Ist of December,
but all peppers must be gathered be
fore the first freeze.
The plant in Griffin is the only
enterprise of the kind in the United
States. The machinery was invent
ed and the process of canning dis
covered by Mark Reigel, of the firm
of Wayman & Reigel, orginal own
ers. It has been improved and pro
tected by patent by the present own
ers.
This year the yield from about
900 acres is being canned and mark
eted throughout the United States.
Plans are being considered for
doubling the capacity of the plant,
and by the 151 h of November the
company will have signed contracts
for the delivery of the products from
2,000 acres. It is expected that the
acreage in the territory will exceed
2,500 acres and every effort will be
made by the canners to place it on
the market.
In Spain, where much attention is
devoted to the growing and canning
of pimento peppers, the entire pro
cess is by hand. In Griffin quicker
and more satisfactory results are de
rived by the use of mechanical equip
ment.
It is no unusual sight to witness
several wagons and auto truck loads
of peppers lined up at the plant
awaiting their turn to be weighed.
The industry is now regarded as one
of the most important and prosper
ous in the county.
Plans are being considered for the
installation of plants in Clark county
at an early date.
Visitors to the plant are interest
ed in the method of operation. Af
ter the core of the pepper is remov
ed, the pod is placed on automatic
roasters and conveyors carry it from
one section of the immense building
to another, passing through contin
uous cookers and equipment. The
flavor is unexcelled and shipments
are frequently made by the carload.
The cotton crop in Spaling, admit
tedly one of the banner agricultural
counties of the State, is almost a
total failure this year. Ginneries
that have been handling 3,000 bales
will not gin more than 100 this year,
consequently the success of the pep
per industry means much to the
county. Farmers who have been pro
ducing from ten to fifteen bales of
cotton to the mule will not this year

The citizens of Barnesville and La
mar county are considering the erec
tion of a Pimento plant in Bames
ville. It is believed Pimentoes can be
very profitably grown by farmers of
Lamar county and many of them are
interested deeply in the question. It
is understood that whether a plant
is located here or not the Griffin
plant will contract for Pimento acre
age and that many Lamar county
farmers will probably make contracts
for the Griffin plant. Several farm
