RURAL ROUTES INSPECTED
By direction of the Post Office De
partment Mr. J. G. Bush, postmaster
at Goggansvilie, and other postmast
ers throughout the country have re
cently made an inspection of the ru
ral routes from their offices. The
purpose was that they might ascer
tain by personal observation and
make report whether the roads used
were in good condition for travel,
the routes well arranged, boxes prop
erly erected, so as to be easily reached
by the carriers without difficulty and
without obstructing travel, the car
riers serving their routes as officially
prescribed, the schedule observed,
and whether the families served were
satisfied with the service rendered, or
there were improvements which could
be suggested in the interest of the
patrons or the Department.
It became necessary, in connection
wi. h the inspections, to request many
patrons to take action to the end that
their boxes might conform with the
regulations as to kind, condition, lo
cation, or height, and in having the
name of the owner plainly printed on
them. Also, to birng to the atten
tion of road overseers or other re
sponsible persons the need for im
provement in roads or repair or con
struction of culverts or bridges.
It is the desire of the Department
and its purpose, to provide adequate
and convenient service, so far as may
be possible, to all persons residing in
rural communities, but this end can
not be attained without the full co
operation of the patrons in the elforts
of postmasters and carriers to serve
them promptly, regularly and satis
factorily.
Whatever facilitates the work of
the carrier is of direct benefit to the
patrons, for the greater the ease and
speed wiih which a carrier may cover
his route the earlier and better the
service afforded.
So, patrons of rural delivery can
greatly help themselves by helping
their carrier, seeing to it that roads
are kept in good condition and
promptly opened after storms, by
keeping the approaches to their boxes
clear, and by promptly and willingly
correcting any irregularities affecting
their boxes when asked to do so.
Another great assistance that pa
trons can render carriers is by keep
ing themselves supplied with and
using stamps instead of placing un
stamped mail, with money for the
purchase of the required postage, in
the boxes. This delays the carrier
and sometimes imposes a great hard
ship on him, especially in cold or
stormy weather. If preferred,
stamped envelopes, either printed or
plain, may be obtained from the car
rier, are of good quality, and cost
but little move than the value of the
stamps upon them, and are redeem
able at the value of the stamps if
damaged, but returned in a prac
tically whole condiiion. If neces
sary to place money in a box, it
should be put in a coin-holding re
ceptacle or be properly wrapped so
as to be easily picked up by the car
rier.
Money for the purchase of money
orders should not be left in the boxes,
hut should be handed to the carrier
and a receipt obtained.

THAT KNIFE-LIKE PAIN
It Only One of Nature’s Warnings of
Weak or Disordered Kidneys.
Have you a lame back, aching day
and night? Do you feel sharp pains
after stooping? Are the kidneys
sore? Is their action irregular? Use
Doan’s Kidney Pills —the medicine
recommended by so many Barnesville
people. Ask your neighbor.
Mrs. Mattie Willis, 328 Central
Ave., Barnesville, says: “When
standing at my ironing I had a
heavy, dull ache through the small
of my back and had to sit down and
rest. When I stooped I had a terri
ble, knife-like pain through the small
of my back and when I tried to
straighten, a catch came in my back
and it was difficult to get up. My
kidneys didn’t act right and I used
Doan’s Kidney Pills bought at the
Lamar County Drug Cos. After using
Doan’s I was freed of the trouble
and an occasional use of Doan’s
keeps my kidneys in fine shape.”

Central of Georgia Railway Points to Its Record,
of Passenger Service
The existence of a railway is justified by its ability to serve the public with transportation. The
measure of its service is the measure of its worth. The Central of Georgia invites the attention of
the public to some of those things which are indicative of its capacity for efficient passenger trans
portation service.
Much depends upon personnel. As an organization the Central of Georgia is composed of a
body of more than ten thousand faithful and efficient workers. Its officers have advanced through
the ranks of the service, thus acquiring the practical experience for intelligent supervision. The ef
forts of the organization are concentrated upon making the Central of Georgia the outstanding rail
way in the south. American railways have long held and continue to hold the leadership of the world
in efficient transportation service and it is our ambition to make our railroad as good as any in
America.
Much depends upon equipment. Up-to-date and well maintained equipment is essential to pas
senger service of the high type that the Central of Georgia strives to give at all times. For years the
Central of Georgia Railway has been a leader among the railroads of the south in adding to its equip
ment, keeping its equipment in first-class condition and developing its roadway facilities.
All of the main line trains, and many of the trains on branch lines have steel or vestibuled cars.
Such cars are expensive, but they are a generally recognized factor for the safety and comfort of
passengers.
The excellence of equipment is not confined to passenger coaches—but this railway also operates
its own sleeping cars. These are of the most modern construction, excelled by none, and are in charge
of employes, who through years in our employ, ha ve been trained to cheerful service.
The passenger on the Central of Georgia Railway is assured of a safe comfortable trip in a car
of good construction and modern convenience, ove r a smooth-riding track of heavy rails and ties, fully
ballasted and well-maintained, hauled by a locomotive of sufficient power and in such Condition as to
give every assurance of scheduled movement.
For the most part, each locomotive is regularly assigned to the same engineer, who takes a per
sonal pride in its condition. This is believed to be one of the reasons for the small number of en
gine failures on the Central of Georgia Railway, a record is outstanding among the railways of the
south.
The regularity with which Central of Georgia passenger trains maintain their schedules indicates
the high order of our passenger service. During 1921 the Central of Georgia Railway operated upon
its 1914 miles of track 33,899 passenger trains of which 33,456, or 98.7 per cent were on time. This
excels even the remarkable record of 1920 when 95 per cent of the trains were on time.
The record by months for the two years follows:
Month 1920 1921
January 90.4 97.6
February 93.0 97.6 1 :
• March 92.7 98.2
April 92.8 98.8
May , 96.7 98.6
' June 97.1 99.0
July 95.6 98.8
August 95.5 99.4
September 97.0 1 99.4
October 97.4 99.4
November 96.2 99.1
December 95.9 98.4
AVERAGE 95.0 98.7
The only record showing the percentage of on time arrival at distillation of passenger trains on
a’l railways was made by the l nited Spates Railroad Administration for the months of August, Sep
tember, October and November, 1919. The average of on time arrivals for all railways for those four
months was 83._ per cent. Ihe average for ihe Central of Georgia during these four months was
9_.l per cent. Comparison but emphasizes the excellence of our record, considered either in connec
tion with other roads or with our own pas: achievements.
The patrons of he Central of Georgia Railway find courteous and sympathetic attention in
every department. Employes take great pride in our reputation for courtesy.
Service is now the only basis of competition among the railroads. Since rates are standardized
the Central of Georgia cannot offer rate bargains to command patronage, but it can offer—and it is
cons antly developing—the organization, equipment and facilities for unusual service.
Constructive criticism and suggestions are invited.

President, Central of Georgia Railway Company.
