Calomel salivation is horrible. It
swells the tongue, loosens the teeth
and starts rheumatism. There’s no
reason why a person should take
sickening, salivating calomel when a
few cents buys a large bottle of Dod

tute for calomel. It is a pleasant
vegetable liquid which will start your
liver just as surely as calomel, but
it doesn't make you sick and can not
salivate.
Calomel is a dangerous drug, be
sides it may make you feel weak,
sick and nauseated tomorrow. Don’t

BARBECUE AT ELEY’S
The Barnesville Advertising Club
held its monthly barbecue at Eley’s
last Thursday evening, where about
250 people assembled to enjoy the
event.
The wind was blowing pretty
strong and it was real cool and the
crowd was at a disadvantage in this
respect but many of them thoroughly
enjoyed the barbecue and the fine
lemonade.
On account of the conditions it was
thought advisable not to have the
contemplated program of short talks
and in a large measure the purpose
of the barbecue was lost. However,
the large crowd profited by the little
outing.
It is probable that hereafter plans
will be more definitely aranged so
that the interest of the club may be
better taken care of by a general dis
cussion of topics of interest to the
club and the community.
HOME RAISED FEED
NEEDED IN DAIRYING
Incidentaly we are told by the
representative of one of our prin
cipal transportation lines recently
that a carload of dairy products from
Selma came into Atlanta daily.
Two points should be especially
emphasized as touching not only
dairying, but the entire live stock
indutsry. One is that there is no
profit in it unless the animals are
largely, if not entirely, fed on home
grown food.
Dairyman after dairyman in the
Atlanta district has quit the business
despite relatively high prices for milk
and cream. In practically every in-
stance the lack of profit has been due
to buying instead of growing feed
stuffs.
The second point is the necessity
of banking encouragement to dairy
ing and the live stock industry in
general in the south. It is no ex
aggeration to say that one of the
greatest obstacles to diversified agri
culture and animal industry in Geor
git and the south is the attitude of
the average banker.
Most of them have been, up to the
present time, absolutely blind to any
thing as loan security except a bale
of cotton. They have given lip ser
vice to the doctrine of diversified
agriculture and animal industry, but
these things have meant nothing
when it comes to backing the diver
sifying farmer directly or indirectly.
A farmer or dairyman is just as
much entitled to a loan based on live
stock production, as he is to a loan
based on cotton production and he
gits such live stock loans in every
part of this country except the south,
where it is needed the most.
The enormously wealthy agricul
tural states like Illinois, lowa, Kan
sas, etc., were poor until their staple
crop production of corn, hay and
forage began to go to the markets on
foot in the shape of beef cattle, hogs
and dairy products. Georgia and
other southeastern states can accumu
late wealth faster than the west when
we take up animal farming in all its
phases in earnest and have the back
ing of our banks in so doing.
No agricultural section anywhere
can be permanently prosperous and
maintain its capital in the shape of
soil fertility that does not combine
animal farming along with other farm
crops. Georgia and the south gen
erally can grow cattle and hogs at
less cost per pound than any other
section of the United States.
Is there danger in overstocking the
meat market in Georgia? Such dan
ger is not in sight. The manager of
the Swift plant at Moultrie was quo
ted recently as saying that a million
pounds of fresh meat daily was now
being imported into Georgia.
Now that the boll weevil has con
vinced both cotton farmer and bank
er that entire dependence on cotton
production is no longer safe, it is to
be hoped that they can both see
something besides cotton bales and
that Georgia and other southern
states can become self-supporting in
the sense of producing the food
stuffs that we now so largely spend
our cotton crop for.
Our farm system, based on cotton
production for the last fifty or sixty
years, has been both an agricultural
and economic crime. We have not
been recompensed in accord with our
effort in cotton production. We have
had a meager living at the expense
of depletion of soil fertility. That
fertility can only be restored by a
farming system of which live stock
is a large part.
Our bankers must back up the
diversified farming and live stock in
dustry. It means, when once estab
lished, a degree of agricultural pros
perity such as Georgia never dreamed
of, and our agricultural capital, soil
firtility, will be steadily increasing,
instead of washing away steadily
with the winter rains.

Lumbago
This is a rheumatism of the mus
cles of the back. It comes on sud
denly and is quite painful. Every
movement aggravates the disease.
Go to bed, keep quiet and have
Chamberlain’s Liniment applied and
a quick recovery may be expected.
Mrs. F. J. Dann, Brockport, N. Y.,
writes: “I can honestly say that
Chamberlain’s Liniment cured me of
lumbago a year ago last summer.
When I began using it, I was flat on
my back in bed and could not turn
to the left or right. I had a bottle
of Chamberlain’s Liniment in the
house and this was applied to my
back. It promptly drove away the
pains and aches.”

MR. WILLIAMS DEAD
Mr. Jeff D. Williams died at his
home on Brown avenue Friday night
after an illness of one week. He had
long been afflicted but most of the
time during the past several years he
had stayed at his store and kept his
buisness going. He did a successful
business on a small scale in the build
ing just across the railroad from the
depot.
Mr. Williams was 63 years old, for
many years was engaged in contract
ing, and he has assisted in erecting
and repairing probably more houses
throughout this vicinity than any
other workman here. He has had
numerous misfortunes of one kind
and another but he kept his face to
the front and was always in a more
or less cheerful frame of mind. It
was only after he became physically
unable to continue work at his trade
that he opened up a mercantile busi
ness, which provided him a livelihood
and an occupation. He was honest,
industrious and law abiding and held
the respect of the citizens of the en
tire community.
Mr. Williams was not a member of
any church but to those who talked
with him in his last days he affirmed
his trust in God.
The funeral services were held at
the home Sunday afternoon at 2
o’clock, Rev. Arthur Jackson, pastor
of the First Baptist church, conduct
ing the service and in the presence
of a large number of friends paid
tribute to the life of the deceased.
The body was buried in the family
lot in Greenwood cemetery.
Mr. Williams is survived by one
daughter, Mrs. Musie Fink of Smith
ville, three sons, Arthur Williams,
member of the police force of Barnes
ville, Henry Williams, with the J. B.
McCrary Cos., Atlanta, and Hoyt Wil
liams, of Abilene, Texas.
The people of the community will
extend tender sympathy to all the
bereaved loved ones.

We wish to express our deep and
sincere appreciation to all our neigh
bors and friends for the kindness and
generous consideration of us in the

death of our father, Mr. J. D. Wil
liams. We appreciate beyond our
words to express the many courtesies
shown us.

PEPPER NOTES
A few pointers here may be of
value to growers especially as coming
from the Pomona Products Company.
Soda applications once a month of
fifty pounds to the acre and especial
ly a heavy application, which is the
last one about the third week in Sep
tember just after the first big crop
is picked off.
They will begin to ripen about the
first of August, but do not begin
picking until there are enough pep
pers on the stalks to make a haul.
It will not hurt them to hang on the
stalks a while.
Red peppers are wanted, so send
only red ones and if some are picked
green it is advisable to let lay out
in a pile for a day which will redden
them.
It is suggested that all peppers be
sacked, tagged and weighed. The
weight written on tag of each sack
with the owners name on the tag, too.
This will make for quick handling at
the unloading points in Griffin.
Information regarding delivery
days will come later.
There are a few fellows who still
have no contracts, but who were en
couraged to go ahead and plant, so
if you have not quite planted your
acreage let us know who and the
number of acres. Give this informa
tion to Mr. Cliett or Mr. Drexel.

“I have used Doan’s Kidney Pills off
and on for the past fifteen years and
they are the only remedy that has
given me any relief. Spells of kid
ney complaint came upon me and
pains darted through my back like
knife stabs. My back often became
so stiff it felt like a board. I couldn’t
move without sharp pains in my back
and I became weak and dizzy. My
kidneys acted irregularly and I used
Doan’s Kidney Pills. They rid me
of these attacks and when I feel any
trouble coming on I always use
Doan’s and they keep me in pretty
good shape.”
