CALCIUM ARSENATE
PROVING EFFECTIVE
By Jack L. Patterson in Atlanta
Journal.
Arlington, Ga. —Interest through
out southwest Georgia is centering on
the anti-boll weevil campaign being
waged on the J. S. Cowart plantation,
near Arlington, Calhoun county. The
ravages of the pest have rendered
the production of cotton unprofitable,
but it seems that a ray of hope is be
ginning to dawn among the popula
tion.
The Cowart farm includes 6,000
acres of land divided into more than
seventy tracts which are being oper
ated under the tenant system. The
research work is under the direction
of Dr. E. J. DeLoach, former director
of the Georgia experiment station,
who is a scientist of noteworthy
achievement along agricultural lines.
The Calcium Arsenate Plan
It has been discovered that cal
cium arsenate is a deadly poison to
the weevil, and on the cotton inspect
ed Tuesday there was little evidence
of the presence of the pest. The
powder was being applied by hand
and mule-drawn implements, espec
ially manufactured for the purpose
of “dusting” cotton. Dr. DeLoach
made the positive statement that the
yield from the 825 acres would equal
that of ten years ago when cotton
grew unmolested on practically every
farm in the state. In his opinion
other practical farmers concurred,
the well-fruited plants offering addi
tional testimony of a profitable yield.

dealers, is, according to investigators,
destined to become a powerful factor
in the management of the weevil.
The poison may be applied in “dust”
or liquid form, the former being in
favor with the state and Director
DeLoach. Neither, however, ques
tion the effectiveness of the liquid
form, which has many advocates
among well informed men. The
“dust” is applied to the plant, pre
ferably late in the afternoon, and is
moistened by the morning dew. Of
this poison, the weevil, which can not
exist and deposit eggs without im
bibing water, drinks, and instantan
eous death is the inevitable result.
The first application, according to
experts, should be made when the
plant is 1,3 or 4 inches in height,
and other applications to the number
of four or five made during the
period of fruiting.
The importance of picking infested
squares from the ground and burning
them was emphasized without dissent,
this being considered about 60 per
cent of the fight. The weevil enters
the form or boll, from which he must
issue to partake of the dew. Fre
quently the boll is so infected that it
falls to the ground and the only way
to prevent migration of the pest is
to burn his home.
At Small Cost
The- cost of applying four courses
of the poison to the growing plant
is estimated at four dollars per acre
or less than one dollar per applica
tion. The amount necessary to
“dust” an acre varies from one to
three pounds, being regulated by the
size of the plant.
The visitors on the farm Tuesday
were surprised to witness the result
that has already been achieved. In
la section of the state, numerously
infested by the weevil, cotton is grow
ing as it did prior to the invasion of

the pest. The limbs are laden with
bolls and there is sufficient evidence
of a satisfactory yield. Diligent
search disclosed the presence of few
er than six weevils, but it was stated
that the total extermination of the
invader by the application of arsen
ate or any other poison was impossi
ble, and that cotton could only be
produced after a hard fight which
must be continued every year.
