CHARGES SPORTS
SUPPLANTING EDUCATION
Atlanta, Nov 27. -Too much foot
ball and other, sports and too little
education in the colleges and institu
tions of learnipgjs, as defined by Pres
ident M. W. Riggs, of Clcmson Col
liege, South Carolina, finds thorough
accord as an expression of opinion in
the State Kducationa! Department of
the State of G-eo'rgia.
The State Commissioner of educa
tion, Dr. M M. Parks, says he “heart
ily and emphatically agrees” with
Dr. Riggs, and at the same time draws
attention to the fact that it is en
tirely too much for the State of
Georgia to pay, on the one hand from
S2OO to S4OO a year for each of the
athletes and rooters, and only S4.KB
a year for the education of tha gen
eral run of children of the State.
In hi# comment on the situation
President Itiggs, of Clemson College,
said:
“Athletics, and particularly foot
ball, is becoming entirely too import
ant in present-day college life. Peo
ple think too much of the calibre of
a football team and too little of the
curriculum and the degree of citizen
ship it gives to young men of the
country.”

In commenting upon Dr. Riggs’
criticism, State Superintendent Parks
made this reply:
“I hesitate to express an opinion
at this time on the subject of ath
letics, but since you ask me a pointed
questiofi, as a public official, I will
not dodge but will give you an an
swer straight from the shoulder.
“1 heartily and emphatically agree
with the statement of President
Riggs, of Clemson College, that ath
letics, and particularly football, is
becoming entirely too important in
present-day college life, and that
‘people think too little of the curri
culum and the degree of citizenship
it gives the young men of the coun
try.’
“President Riggs is right when he
says that ‘thoughtful educators are
beginning to view with alarm the ex
tent to which football has supple
mented other school subjects in the
mind of the public.'
“Personally, I have always believed
in games and athletics, but not the
type of intercollegiate games we are
having in some of our colleges and
some of our high schools. The games
are taking the minds away from se
rious study and from the library and
college work.
Scholarship Plays “Second Fiddle”
“In some places, scholarship is
playing ‘second fiddle’ to athletics
and sport society. I am told there

“Many taxpayers of Georgia seri
ously object—and they have a right
to object. From letters, and from
contact with the people of Georgia,
I am receiving vigorous objections to
the present tendencies in athletics.
“Think of spending from S2OO to
S4OO a year on each of the athletes
and rooters, when there are tens of
thousands of doantry children in
Georgia, poorly provided with schools
or teachers or books, ajid each child
receiving from the State treasury
only $4.88 per year for his education.
“The school year is short, the
standards of scholarship in Georgia
are none too good, and it is unfor
tunate that so many students are
losing so much time from regular
school work which has been provided
by the State. It is time to call a
halt and to get down to more serious
work, with fewer holidays and fewer
absences.”
TREASURY SAVINGS
CERTIFICATES OFFERED

SI,OOO, now sold to investors at
$20.50, SB2 and SB2O, respectively.
They pay 4 per cent if held until ma
