Subscription, $1.50 Year
BARNESVILLE. GEORGIA
DECEMBER 7, 1922.
EDITORIAL NOTES.
Governor Hardwick may have been
right in refusing to dignify “Rat
Killing Day” with a proclamation for
its observance, but nevertheless rat
killing is a very important matter.
If we really knew what the total de
struction from rats amounted to
even in Lamar county it would be
astonishing, and when the destruc
tion in the state and nation is added
it would be such a sum that its im-
portance would at once be appre
ciated. What good rats are for we
do not know. Anyway, with the
lights before us we do not hesitate
to advise that rats be destroyed to
the utmost extent around the prem
ises in the city, village and country.
Lamar county is poorer by thousands
of dollars every year because of the
destruction by rats.
This has been an exceptionally fine
fall, the weather nearly all the time
being about as good as could be de
sired. People have had every ad
vantage in harvesting their scanty
crops and closing up their affairs so
far as possible for the old year. In
all probability, however, we will
have our share of bad weather later,
when the cold and dreary days will
come and we will need a supply of
coal or other fuel to keep us as com
fortable as possible. In dry weath
er prepare for the “rainy day.”
It is a pity that Thanksgiving Day
is no longer properly observed by the
people of our nation. Atlanta,
merely as an illustration, had an at
tendance of home folks and visitors
of 25,000 to 30,000 people at a foot
ball game, and probably only 1,000
at all the churches and Thanksgiving
services throughout the city. Judg
ing by the indications perhaps one in
five hundred stops to think of the
real meaning and purpose of the day.
The President and Governors here
after might as well proclaim it mere
ly a National Iloliduy and let it go
at that.
The “Good Will” election conduct
ed by the Atlanta Journal to raise
funds for devastated France did not
result, in one respect at least, as it
should, in that two “Gold Star”
Mothers failed of election, whereas
several candidates, who hud no such
claims, won the trip to France solely
because they were bucked by strong
financial concerns. It would have
been such an appropriate thing to
have sent Mi’s. T. ,1. Hunt, of Lamar
county, on the trip, and thus given
just recognition to a “Gold Star”
Mother, as she was eminently enti
tled to and worthy of such recogni
tion. Mrs. Hunt stood tenth in the
final count, which was a good record.
There have been a number of se
rious fires in different portions of
the country recently and there have
been several in our own territory.
Fires take their immense toll every
year, in lives and property. Much
of this loss, of course, is unavoid
able, but much of it is absolutely
caused by carelessness. Every pre
caution should be taken by every
body to prevent unnecessary fires.
Watch out always for little children
in their thoughtlessness and he ex
tremely careful in having fires about
the premises. Fires sometimes oc
cur from incendiarism and when such
is the case no punishment is too se
vere for such a demon, for only one
posessed of a demon would deliber
ately set fire to a home or other
building for destruction.

Taking Desperate Chances
It is true that many contract se
vere colds and recover from them
without taking any precaution or
treatment, and a knowledge of this
fact leads others to take their
chances instead of giving their colds
the needed attention. It should be
borne in mind that every cold weak
ens the lungs, lowers the vitality,
makes the system less able to with
stand each succeeding attack and
paves the way for the more serious
diseases. Can you afford to take
such desperate chances when Cham
berlain’s Cough Remedy, famous for
its cure of bad colds may be had for
a trifle?

HOW
TO
SAVE
The man who buys
one suit of clothes
and sets about to
wear it out, is ex
travagant.
But the man who buys two
suits, for constant use, is wise.
He knows that a weekly press
ing will mean a treble length
of life for both suits; he knows
that he will always appear well
groomed.
And being wise enough for all
these things,he likewise knows
that GRIFFON CLOTHES are
the kind he will want to ask
for in the first place.
