J PREPARING FOR BATTLE
AGAINST THE WEEVIL
While a prophet of the boll weevil
is usually without honor in his own
country, there comes from Mr.
Clarence Ousley, director of the nat
ional association for the control of
the arch cotton destroyer, a state
ment' so rich in common sense as
j well as in scientific knowledge that
the most skeptical "an well afford
Ito listen. Following a visit to the
experiment station of the federal de
partment of agriculture at Tallulah,
Louisiana, which is maintained es
pecially to study the weevil and to
perfect methods for combatting it,
Mr. Ousley reports, “There is not
the slightest reason, in the expe
rience of thirty years nor in the
minutest observations and records of
the scientists, to believe that the
weevil has been eradicated or has
been reduced below the point of dan
ger.” He does not venture a fore
cast of how extensive or how de
structive the attacks of the parasite
will be in the coming summer, for
that depends on weather factors
which are entirely unpredictable.
Such conditions, however, can hardly
be as favorable as in 1924, when
there was a seasonable combination
of drouth and heat known not more
than three or four times within a
period of thirty years. Certainly, in
the judgment of those best qualified
to speak, the cotton grower cannot
afford to reckon without his weevil
host.
Vet these same authorities are
anything hut cheerless at the pros
pect. Cotton can be matured de
spite the enemy, they declare, if the
battle is well planned and well
waged. Says Mr. Ousley, “By the
practice of the cultural methods now
thoroughly tested and demonstrated
in every cotton State and by prac
tice of the processes of control and
by poison equally tested and widely
demonstrated, the cotton belt need
have no fear as to control of the boll
weevil, provided only that the farm
ers do not trust to the luck of weath
er, hut make the most of the infor
mation which has been gathered for
them by painstaking research and
confirmed by the best farmers in
every cotton community.”
Though there is nothing novel in
this utterance, there is practical wis
dom, which is far better. By avail
ing themselves of the proved means
of getting ahead of the foe, Georgia
growers will make a crop of cotton,
unless the weather gods are alto
gether unpropitious; and J)y adher
ing to the supremely important policy
of diversification, they will insure
prosperity, as far as human effort
can do so. But to ignore the weevil
menace or to fail in providing the
food harvests would just as certainly
invite disaster.—Atlanta Journal.
GEORGIA PEPPER
INDUSTRY SHOWS A
REMARKABLE GROWTH
Growing pimiento peppers which
was begun a few years ago in middle
Georgia territory served by the
Southern Railway has brought very
satisfactory returns and the industry
lias been expanded until it has now
reached considerable proportions.
Canneries are located at Griffin
and Jackson, Ga., and consume ail
peppers which will not ripen in time
tor canning before the falling of
frost are picked green and shipped
to eastern and western markets.
During: the 1924 season the South
ern handled from the two canneries
over 2,000,000 pounds of canned pi
miento, moving L.C.L. to destinations
all over the country, and 76 cars of
green peppers to markets principally
in the East and Middle West. Sixty
one cars moved to points outside the
South as follows: Jersey City 37
cars, Chicago 7, Pittsburgh, 5, Phila
delphia 5, Boston 5, New York 2.
In addition to the outbound move
ment, there is a substantial move
ment of cars, cases, other canning
materials, and coal to the canning
plants.—Southern News Bulletin.
