START IT WITH A NICKR
By W. T. ANDERSON
In Macon Telegraph
Despise not the day of small things.
All of us have been telling the farm
er for lo these many years that he
should diversify his crops. One may
-ay he doesn’t know what diversifica
tion means, but probably he won’t
object to definition. Our formula
has been for the farmer. Diversifi
cation ought to mean that the farmer
shall have something to sell at all
seasons of the year, and diversifica
tion for the city man ought to
mean that he pledges himself to buy
these things at all seasons of the
Most of us are foolishly waiting
for a revolution, or some big ex
plosion before we start something.
We have the idea that whatever is
done to get away from the present
difficulties in agriculture, it must be
on a big scale—that the farmers
must by one stroke or concert of ac
tion change from an all-cotton sys
tem into one of all kinds of products.
Well, in the first place, what would
they do with these diversified articles
today if they were to come trotting
into town with them? Who would
buy these things? No, you would
not. Are you buying them now?
No! Don’t resort to that popular
pastime of blaming the other fellow.
Let’s see if we can’t fasten the blame
on you. Of course, I am equally as
guilty as you are. But you are the
one on trial, as the grand juror says
when he is voting to convict a friend
less negro for the same crime that
the grand juror commits every day
of the year.
You go to a soda fount to buy a
drink—go there some three or four
time a day, maybe. It’s only a nickel,
and it’s no great matter what you
buy—that is what you think, and that
is what you do. Chances are you
just order the first thing you see sug
gested in advertising or otherwise,
and pour it into your stomach, with
out regard to the stomach or what
becomes of your nickel.
It’s dollars to doughnuts your
nickel gets on the train and beats it
for Oshkosh or Schenectady, and
never gets back here again. You
then continue to cuss somebody else
for the troubles you experience. You
not only do this with your nickels,
but the practice and ease of it makes
it possible and habitual for you to do
the same thing with your dollars.
Jack Massee, last year, while hauling
good Georgia peaches to the river
and dumping them, selling peaches
at 60c a crate, in which the crating
cost him 46c. went home one night
and found California canned peaches
on his table for supper. He is no
different from the rest of us. He
just admits it, that’s all.
Hut what about the drink—the
nickel drink? It is well not to get
too far away from the subject or
point, because the idea at the begin
ning was to convict you, and here
you are laughing at Jack Massee.
Suppose instead of this imported
juniper juice or some such thing, you
ordered a glass of milk at the soda
fount. The milk contains fifteen dif
ferent elements needed in your blood
stream. The blood, when normal and
well fed, contains sixteen elements.
Milk contains fifteen of these. It
lacks iron—that’s all.
Too many starches and sweets fill
your blood with acid and cause rheu
matism. Milk is whole food, furnish
ing material for keeping people from
becoming bald, for maintaining their
teeth, for preventing hardened arter
ies and high blood pressure, for pre
venting tubercular germs, and such
like, from getting a start; for sup
plying brain tissue; and the stomach,
liver and kidneys get the greatest re
sults with the least effort. Every
man, woman and child in Georgia
should have at least a quart of sweet
milk, unskimmed, every day. How
many cows do you suppose it would
require to supply us with this amount
of first-class food?
Many people argue lustily for a
creamery, or some other arrangement
to market milk and butter. Let the
folks do their duty to themselves and
their community with their nickels,
and it will be a long time before they
have any surplus to sell tv a cream
ery. It is possible to start the dairy
ing industry in Georgia within a few
months, to stop so many nostrums
called medicines, to cut oIY the hos
pitals and the doctors and the den
tists. The nickel at the soda fount
will start it. More milk in the home
will mean more cows on the farm—
right at your door. The nickel for
milk will stay around and work for
everybody in the community.
Will we begin today, or will we
just continue to cuss somebody else?

YOU ARE BEHIND THE TIMES WITHOUT 4-WHEEL BRAKES
The Modern Trend is All
Toward 4- Wheel Brakes
The newest and most striking motor car improvement is the
4-wheel brake. BUT some cars still cling to the old, rear-wheel
•| type of braking. The chart above shows clearly that such cars j
are losing ground rapidly. Alert buyers are choosing cars with
4-wheel brakes and “drive-shaft" brakes. Nash has, as stand
ard equipment at no extra cost, the greatest 4-wheel brakes
of this motor car era, and “drive-shaft" brake, too. Nash
cars are the most notably modern cars on the market in body
design, engineering, and flashing performance. And so Nash
is smashing sales records as fast as they are made.

Men and Money I
Make This Bank Secure I
THERE are two ways of measuring the!
strength and standing of a bank. In the first!
place money resources —capital and surplus
give it financial strength.
In the second place—and perhaps even
more* important—are men, the officers and
directors. They give the bank character,
determine and execute its policies.
This is a strong bank, a helpful bank be
cause it has ample resources, and a personnel
of proven character and ability.
