Chambers has purchased W.u. Willis the place in, mßm Mr.W. 11. Parke^iyaßiSiii Our Answer. In the last issue of the Gazette Mr. Robert H. Allen appeared, under the >w de phm* of “Liberal,” as the cham pion of Professor A. 0. Harris, for Clerk of the Superior Court. Two days later he appeared in the Pike County News as “A Friend.” Our friend has liecome somewhat of a Bohemian in the newspaper arena. If this term does not locate him, we will present him as the hydra-sided correspondent of the Press. From his article in the News, of Saturday, he would seem the genuine Proteus. For instance he says: I see in the last Gazette the editor says that R, T. Beckham, Clerk Superior Court Pike coun ty announces hiuisell as a candidate for his own suceessorshlp— he tells us that Mr. Beckham has made as good a cleric as any county in the State has. No one denies this, he says his opponents seem to And no argument against his re-election eiceptthat he has had the position of clerk ion? enough. That is true, and in my judgment he will ilnd a majority of the people of Plae agreeing With me. , Now you sec that this press kaleido scope reflects the merits of Mr. Beck ham, just as we did. He states our posi tion and says, “no one denies this,” and “that is true.” Well, that, in sub stance,is just what we said in our notice of Mr. Beckham’s announcement, as is our usual custom of refering to an nouncements made through the Gazette. Up to this point in our friend’s card he has been looking at Mr. Beckham. lie now looks on Mr. Harris, and cha meleon like, he appears in another color. Referring to the eilitor of the Gazette he says: Does ho moan to say that Augustus Harris Is Incompetent to fill the position of Clerk Superior Court Pike County, and that if he is needy and poor it is better to pension him than elect him for Clerk, as it would necessitate him to live off his salary. Wonder If Mr Beckham (fid not sub sist entirely for several year’s on his salary,, nev er heard of his having anything else for several years after he was first, elected; suppose he uses a little of it yet. Have we any pension office In the county of I’lke that we can extend any chari ty to incompetent disabled confederate soldiers outside the pauper farm—does R. V. Beckham having made a good clerk and holding the office •o long argue that there Is no other man in Pike competent for clerk? Does he claim that he Isa mere object or charity outside of qualification, that the friends are urging ala claim* over that of Mr Beckham? To this catechism,we did not say,nor “mean to say, that Augustus Harris is incompetent to fill the position of C lerk of the Superior Court of Tike county.” Does this amply satisfy our friend of numerous signatures ? And we further answer that we did not mean to say “that if he is needy and poor, it is bet ter to pension him than to elect him for Clerk.” Does this satisfy “Liber al,” “A Friend,” “North Pike,” “A. H. IF,” Veritas,” “Zebulon,” and all th(l fictitious reflected through tliej press kaleidoscope of AY est Pike i AVe of no “pension office, outside the pA farm.” AVe do not think “R. Y. Becknam’s having made a good and holding the so long that there is no otliminan in Pike com- petent for Clerk.” do not “claim that it is a mere objfct of charity out side of the friends of Augustus Harris are urging his claims over that of Mr. Beckham.” AVill these answers enalde the Many People who write for Mr. Harris to understand that we did not have Mr. Harris in our mind when we,in accordance custom called attention to the anuncement of Mr. Our friend has re ally, so ivs as tent ions wm con cerned, no cause for attacking Mr. Beck ham, in order to advertise, what he terms Mr. Harris’claims on the county. *YVe have always appreciated Mr. Harris as a gentleman and Supported him. AVe have not aught to say against him now, He is competent to fill the office of Cl{|||£| of the Superior We caniiWr however, see how “Liberal” and “A Friend” and all till other writers re flected through the political kaleido scope of AVest Pike, can do him any good by such articles in the last issue of the Pike Cjounty News. Lord Bacon said “Discre*a of speech is more than eloquence.” Friend Allen should remember that “Five words cost Zacharias forty weeks of silence.” An other card or two from our numerous friend may cost Mr. Harris the defeat of th* Clerkship. The very uncharitable and ungener ous reference of a “A Friend” to Mr. Beckham’s liavfig made a competency out of the Clerkship, has brought very •important feature of his administra tion to light. Business men ask us to say that the charges of Mr. Beckham for recording papers are from one-fourth to one-thircbless than the clerks of other counties charge. VTe are prepared to prove thjpfif it is desired. This shows that fir. Beckham is not getting all the “filth* lucre” (which our friend sees so prominent) from the office that he niigfct get, because he has not been charging the full price the law allows him to charge. This looks like a con sideration for others and not seeking all for himself. Now lest our friend get the wrong coloring from the above, we will say,in advance, that we do not mean to say, that Mr. Harris would charge more than Mr. Beckham. Friend Allen presents one proposition which we feel, in seriousness, called on £o answer. The clum’s proposition is certainly a most absurd one, and we be lieve with Atterbery, that “The greater absurdities are, the more strongly they evince the falsity of that supposi tion from which they dow.” Our friend entirely mistakes the purpose of gov ernment in his claim’s proposition. Burke, one of the greatest of English statesmen said, “k provide torus in our necessities is i*t in the power of government.” This is in direct opposi tion to the theory of friend Allen. The business of government, whether mu nicipal. county, state or general govern ment, is not, directly to make the peo ple rich, but to protect them in making themselves rich; and the government which attempts more than this precise ly, the government which performs less. They do not and cannot support the people. Pike county has not the rod of the Hebrew law-giver; cannot rain down bread from heaven; cannot smite the rod and give drink. iShe can only give freedom to employ industry, to the best advantage, and security in the enjoyment of what this in lus ry acquired. This is the position we occupy more elaborately presented than in our shoi£ notice of Mr. Bekcliam’s announcement. A Now we would friend to an fgver a few questioners the representa tive and with authority to speak for Mr. Harris. Did Mr. Harris not after being defeated for Ordinary two years ago, iermit his name to be used as an independent candidate for Collector, ag anist Mr. Lifsey ? Does Mr. Harris propose, an and will he abid%the action of the democratic party in the nomination ? Will our nuin erous friend answer these questions as candidly as we have responded to his catechism? We had intended in this issue to re fer to the estimable article of Mrs. *-H. S.” in the Household in which she saw lit to make some stictures on us for al lowing politics to crowd out the House holiLNow thatfthe politicalldiscussion has settled down to a normal slate it is proper'to entertain her f<wa moment.
