F* ‘nant I of the Fastraan riot
ers were executed at the jail in liast
■ktau. Shipman the sixth one was res
ented by Governor Colquitt.
QElla Moore,.Simon O’Quinn, Joe King.
Reddy Powell and Bob Donaldson were
the five executed—four men and one
woman, all colored. They were escort
ed by Floyd Kiftes from Bibb jail to the
jail at Eastman.
Onr readers remember the main facts
in the riot, that brought these five un
fortunate colored i>eople to the gallows
The five were all arrayed on the scaffold
side by side and the rope adjusted about
their necks. And at 1 o’clock the sher
iff dropped them into eternity. They
talked very little-some of them dis
claiming to the last their guilt.
There is no record of the gallows iu
Georgia that compares with this execu
tion. I u addition to the five persons
executed seventeen were sent to the
penitentiary for life.
BUCKS OHIO AID.
Last week the Atlanta Republicans
met to consult and speak in behalf of
the candidacy clerk of A. E. Buck,who
once commanded a negro regiment and
is now a candidate for Congress agaimst
lion. X. J. Hammond. Pledger went
to Ohio to disgust the voters of that
.State with his miserable misrepresenta
tions of Georgia, and the result was
aljout 30,(KM) Democratic majority and a
grdn of eight or ten Congressmen. Xow
at tiiis Republican meeting in Atlanta,
Walter S. Thomas a precocious young
mulatto of Ohio was tike orator of the
occasion.
He said, says the Constitution:
That the voters should send to con
gress Colonel A. E. Buck, a gentleman
represent their interest and
and not Colonel Hammond,
who would not represent them. He said
Georgia would want a protective tariff
and referred to the iron and coal inter
ests of the State, and asserted that the
tkii iff question would be the great sub
ject for tle next Congress. He then
reviewed the tariff questjfb, and gave
its history from tike beginning. The
speaker took up the public schools of the
south and compared it with the public
schools of the west, and referred to the
fact that the first colored graduate of
the ( olumbus high school was as black
as jet. In Ohio, he said, there wer no
three month schools, but that in eeery
school district a ten month’s teriu.vlle
declared that the republican party was
thwest friend to the public school sys
tem, and that it was the party which
g:ure the soitla its first public schools.
ll%ssserted that the only |way for the
coKred race to elevate itself was to ac
cumulate property, acquire knowledge
and vote the republican ticket. The
speaker said that lie never saw a color
ed democrat in his life. *
The republicans of Ohio were defeat
ed on the high protective tariff question
as much as any other. The people of
Georgia are not prepared to be instruc
ted by an Ohio mulatto in the matter of
paying for benefits to the few protected
classes. His school ideas will be about as
healthy to the tax-payers of Georgia as
his tariff views. Though a mulatto he
8 -ems well versed in the ways of burden
ing the masses to protect a few.
Triangular Murder.
peculiar and shocking trag
edy occurred at Knoxville Tennessee
last week. Genl. Mabry and Major
O’Connor had had some trouble about
kthe transfer of some property from Ma-
to O’Connor. Mabry sent
word that he should not live Aid thaHie
would kill him on sight. %
O’Connor was standing in the door oil
the Mechanics national bank, of which
he was president. General Mabry and
another gentleman were walking down
Gay street, on the opposite side from
the bank. O’Conner stepped into the
bank, got a shot gun, took deliberate
aim at General Mabry and fired. Mabry
fell dead, being shot in the left side. As
he fell O’Connor shot again, the shot
taking effect in Mabry’s thigh. O’Con
nor then reached into the bank and got
another shot-gun. About this time Jo
seph A. Mabry, Jr., sou of General Ma
bry, came rushing down the street un
seen by O’Connor until within forty
feet, when young Mabry, fired a pistol,
the shot taking effect in O’Connor's
breast, passing through the body near
the heart.
The instant Mabry snot, O’Connor
turned and fired, the load taking effect
in young Mabry’s right breast and side.
BOTH FALL DEAD. I
Young Mabry fell pierced
ty buckshot, and almost instantly
O’Connor fell dead without a struggle.
Young Mabry tried to bufc fell
back dead. The whole tragedy occurred
within two minutes, and neither of the
three spoke after he was shot. General
Mabry had about thirty buckshot in his
body.
A bystander was painfully wounded
in the thigh with a buckshot, anil anoth
er w;is wounded in the arm. Four
other men had their clothes pierced by
buckshot. The affair caused great ex
citement, and Gay street was thronged
with thousands of people. General
Mabry and his son Joe were acquitted
only a few days ago of the murder of
Moses Lusby and Dan. Lusby, father
and son, whom they killed a few weeks
ago. M ill Mabry was killed by Dan.
Lusby last Christmas. Major Thomas
O’Connor was president of the Mechan
ic's national bank and was the wealthiest
man in the state.
