We trust we will not tire the readers
of this paper with.a sketch of our sail

Let us say a word of Dunedin before
we depart. She has one of the neatest
and best equipped hotels n south Flori

ger is a jovial big hearted fellow, who
does all he can to accommodate and in

ern no where find a more pleasant
place that at Ihe Grumm House. Ven
ison, lish and oysters can be fuond 011
bis table. Douglas and Sanerville do an
immense business. They are the own
el's of the schooner “Faleau” which
makes weekly trips from the Keys to
the above‘‘towns.” But few inhabi
tants as yet. Don’t know what the cen
sus is, but I think a competent person
could take it in less than hour. Plenty
of roads leading into the place—so you
see collisions are avoided. The rail
road is coming, its sure ‘-to come.” She
lias no grog shop, no billiard saloon, no
ten-pins, no desperados, nd negroes but
she has health harmony and hominy.
After bidding adieu to some of our
friends we on Tuesday aftefnoon board
|d the Falean bound for the Keys. We

cutter steamer Eva. runs from
the Keys up the and the Cliaf
ter, Also upon our we viewed
several negroes wharf
who from their actions indicated that
they,were monarch of all they surveyed;
but from appearance one couW easily
come to the conclusion that the lack of
enthusiasm was there. One seemed to
like our looks v^ r much for he came
up <yyj*took a portion in "front of us,
near our while we jpere stand
ing on the vm-irf, We saw his pdliey.
We remarked, ‘will you (yes sah!)
take my trunk into the warehouse?”
Before I could finish the sentence he
he pt me with a—‘‘yes sah.”
We asked him his and was told
a “jnne,” First class mind readers
employment theylinger about the wharf
and are a nuisance to traveling
publi c. A gentleman of the city told
us he could’nt get them to do any thing
for him. Cedar Keys is favored with
a col ored police and %iembers of the
council. We drop Ad in at the Cedar
Mills and found frlm 50 to 75 hands
busily engaged in the manufacturing
of pen holders and cedar pencils. The
work is not finished there but is sent
north where the other wing of the fac
tory completes them.
While standing on the wharf, our at
tention was called away to a crowd of
about 50 negroes and whites who were
witnessing struggles of analf drow
ned horse. Tne animal was hitched to
a cart and was standing on one of the
wharfs when frightened at the whistle
of an approaching engine. Bather op
posed to the noise he began a retreat.
In another instant the vehicle was lo
in g down at a rapid rate closely fellow
ed by the circus horse for it was pFali
ly seen that he made a revolution after (
leaving the platform, Regaining his
position he made a desperate struggle
for feedom. Two darkies came to his
rescue, but it was evident they were
slow in their mission the water being
o ver their heads, and besides clothes
we re an obstacle, The cart became fa
te ned to a post, and there was no go.
The crowd of colored gentlemen above
gave wise instructions telling the two
half drowned darkies to out this rope!
that one unfasten the chain! cut the
bridle! '& etc., but I never noticed any
of them get in and help, he
got safe to terra firma, leaving behind
he wrecked coat and a floating straw
hat. Loud were the cheers of the brave
ones. We venture tosay that that anima
will keep well —being thoroughly salt
ed.
The late storm proved very disastrous
to the placn. Logs, lumbeAand trash
were washed and blown piEniscuously
through the streets. Vessels were
turn ed upon their sidft and injured;
wharves were displaced, trestle w r ork
gone which delayed the train for sever
al days. The loss to the city will
amount to probably over’B2s,ooo.
After knocking around the city for
over a day we were anxious to be aboard
our steamer, for Cedar Keys has no
charms for us. At 6p. in. of Oct. 5
steamship,Cochran,was loosed from its
moorings. In a moment we were on
our voyage to Punta Rossa. We had
gotten on a few yards when we ran
ag round. It was getting dark and the
Captain failed to get the channel. How
ever, after a few minutes of faithful
work we were’free from the sandy
bottom. The sails were hoisted' and
steam put on. A half honrs sailing
placed us in deep water. The bow** of
the boat was now turned B the south
east and Cochran with heuflUls to the
breezejdashed with all over
the billowy waves of me gulf.

tor Gnthn Daily News: There will be

tor places iu Georgia the coniiug fall
and ,w inter. And as many of them
will inquire for the best place to plant
trmts, 1 will offer a few reasons why
middle Georgia, and especially Spald
ing comity, is thought by many' to be the
best location. First,thesoild best adapt
ed to fruit culture is a red or dark san
dy loan, with red clay subsoil. jVerv
much oi the spil of middle Georgia is
of this order, and especially on the high
rolling ground in (middle Georgia,
where the drainage is most perfect. Se
coud, the altitude being 1,000 feet above
tidewater, and say 400 feet higher than
Chicago, Cleveland or Buffalo, gives
pure air, which is so essential to high
flavor in fruit, and this with our south
ern latitude, giving long Summers,
gives rich saeliariue matter and a good
body to wine. The city of Griffin and
"palding county are the highest points
going south after leaving Atlanta. The
decent, after leaving Gridin toward
.Macon, is rapid, falling some GOO to 700
feet in sixty miles. This location is al
so desirable for shipping fruit to New
York. Philadelphia, Baltimore and all
the western cities, |a far as Chicago,
and alsotoXew Orleans,Mobile niuloth
er southern cities, which are becoming
good markets. There is no |county in
the southern states that ships so many
peaches, pears and grapes as Spalding
county, Georgia. And lastly, there is
no more healthy place probably
America, with mild winters and co®P
delightful summers, good freestone wa
ter, a temperature standing fcat HO de
grees, and 110 moving away in summer
for health.
