POPE BARROW. t*-rm of Senator Beii nnHr Hill will lie filled by Pope Par of the most prominent *of the Georgia politicians. He was Porn in Oglethorpe on the Ist August 1839. He received a good |edu oation and graduated at the State Uni versity in 1859. In his class were Hon. A.O. Bacon, Col. J. M. Pace, of Coving ton, f'aptain E. P Howell, Judge Twiggs, and Hon .John Jordon, of the present House of Representatives. In April, 1861, he entered theConfedeaate service as a lieutenaut in the Troup, ar tillery.—Afterwards he was made aid de-camp of General Howell Cobb, and held that position until he was captured n 1865. He was hied in prison until ihe war closed. —Then he came beck to Athens and began the law. His prac tice %was abandoned for three years wince that time, when he farmed in Oglethorpe county. He returned to Athens and the practice several years ago and at the bar has achieved Iflatter ing success. He was elected to the last Legisluture and was one of its foremost men. He held in the House the |ehair raanship of the Committee on Immigra tion. Mr. Barrow married Miss Sallie Craig grand daughter of Dr. Church. She died last Christmas, leaving jinotherless live children. A few weeks ago quite a number of the members of the last flegislature addressed (a letter to Mr Barrow and asked him to allow the use of his name for the unexpirod Senatori al term. He consented, and the zeal ous advocacy of his friends bore fruit in kiii election Wednesday. It is a singu lar coincidence that Mr. Barrow’s great grand-father, Gov. Wilson Lumpkiu was also elected to fill an unexpired h#m in the United States Senate. Mr. Harrow’s father, David C. Barrow, is is planter in Oglethorpe county, Ilis brother, David C. Barrow. Jr., is a Pro fessor at the the State University, and another brother, Thomas Barrow is a planter in Decatur county. Mr. Barrow will enjoy the honor o f being the youngest member of the pre sent Senate. Senator Gorman, of Mary land is two years older. Senator Rid dle berger is a little younger, but will not enter the Senate until the day Mr. Barrow goes out. The Senator elect lias won on envailble frrne at the bar and in legislative council. He has thou Hands of Georgia friends, confidently looking for a fulfillment of the hopes of a life that has been remarkably success ful up to its meridian. It seems from recent complaints and statements that what should be the greatest public benefaction in New York is about to develop in to being a* public calamity. We allude to the pul| lie schools. Complaint is made that the older students are overworked and ||Jie younger ones overcrowded. It is claim that the air in the primary so l'etid that every BBmjury to health. BA say that going through tA| grind of the public cannot get clerkships because they do not possess the kind of knowledge wanted. The girls declare that they are forced to study until midnight in order to learn their lesson, ittis gener ally conceded that the primer -schools all ever the country are too large. Little Children require close and watchful care and school for them should be mads so pleasant that they will not so soon tire of it. Of course it is of tin first importance that they 'should have pure air and healthful summit 1- course too, it is impossible to for young children these requiskj there are five times as many assmkld be crowded into one room and and under only one pair of guardian l The subject just now is engag ing a good deal of attention and discuss "ion in New York and will probably re- Sviltinjsome wholesoimjchauges.lt would doubtless be a blessing if it should en gage the ftt-ention of whole country for ftwlii le. J From some recent occurrences it aif pears that science wonderful works does noT yet unde A stand and control all the forces of na ture. A few days ago in Cincinifliy five hundred telegraph wires were melted in a minute and jpbody was able to give any satisfactory reason for it, or accoun for it in any way. £ Electricity it will be sMi therefore is not entirely subdued by lfan. It may not be a groundless fear to anticipate some anticAfromour electric lights imam aheavy thunder storm. And whefl project of runn\ • h ® av T engined by currents of electricity .f conceded a success, who knows what disasters may not occur if this k fierce power should be wrongly directed, or escape control. It is certainly to be hoped that a deci ded advance may be made in the science of electricity in view of the uses to which it is now being put. America has now libraries con tainiug over a hundred thousand vol umes e ich. This is is almost marvel ous, for twenty-five yea^psgothere was *ot one.
