The initiated men about town ave much amused by the statements of'pen ny-a-liners in newspapers which seek' to curry favor with the lowest classes that American society would not recelv • Mrs. Langtry. It strikes me*that when ‘society" went on its knees before such very small fry as Oscar Wilde, who was rated below par even in up per Bohemia in lxmdon. they ought not to set them selves above such a wo man as Mrs. Langtry, who. whatever the scandal-mongers may say about her is at all events a lady of gentle birth, and is one of the shining lights of that society in fashionable London, where all goul Americans who go abroad hope 8j look in if they are not actually ad mitted, The truth is that the lady has neen literally overwhelmed with invita tions. as might be expected. For, to obtain such a card exclusively jfor her receptions would be a great feather in the cap of a leader of society. But the lady works so hard to obtain suc cess in her profession that site has no time to endulge in social dissipation It may be that she. offended pushing ladies by these refusals, but in this res pect sue is like Bernhardt, who like wis3 remained a social recluse during her- stay in this country. Mrs. Langtry has come over here for work and as her sojourn is but brief, she has not time Tor play. For several years there have been attempts made on the I of naval officers to secure control life-saTing service, but congress put itsjfoot down on the scheme, taking the view that as tiie service had grown under the treasury department and was managed far better than it could be by naral officers, that it ought not now, in its prime, to be made a football and kicked about by those of ficers- Secretary ( handler now pro poses to give his views in support of the transfer. Things are not in as satisfactory a iathe general census bureau as one m.got expect, Tim work drags on very slowly and there is fault found with the whole management. General Walker has stepped out and according to cur rent reports the head of the bureau finds diftir.dty in finishing the job. The trouble is that the affair was undertak en on entirely too large a scale and the retirement of General Walker left mat ters in bad shape. The annual report of the treasury [ siiows the receipts of the government exclusive of the public debt during the fiscal year ended Jun ; 30, lSud, $403,- *25,230, and the expenditures exclusive tiie redemption of the public debt. £258,991.430;that 17.124,196 eagle tender n tes representing £78.047.201 were counted and sent to the committee for 9e siruction and other issued in the place thereof. fco thoroughly have business men be come educated as to counterfeit money that they can detect a piece as soon as it is out. SENSIBLE REPLY. One of the most appropriate as well as one of the most sensible replies we have seen was made by Governor elect Pattison of Pennsylvania last week, He had been written to by various individ uals and organizations to allow them to accompany him to Harrisburg to be inaugurated with pomp; and display. military company who applied to him he replies as follows; -For the personal compliment'intended to be be stowed upon me by these friends,” he writes, ‘T am sincerely grateful, but inust decline to accept their kind offer, for tho reasons lam about to state* I have always entertained a .profound conviction that and undemon strative inauguration of public officers was most in accord with the spirit of republican institutions. There is no reason that I can see why the mere tak ing of an oath by the citizen, called by the people to execute a public trust, should be made the occasion for scenes of pageantry and demonstration. To my mind the solemnity of the act is marred by the intrusion of such need less and inopportune display. The soon er we return to simplicit y and demo vi a tic good sense in these matters the bet ter for the people and better for the officers. Besides, lam resolutely de termined tnat as far as I control the matter my inaugura tion as Governor shall not cost the people of Pennsylva nia one debar, why should n? They derive no benefit from such scenes*. These are my reasons for declining yonr kind offer. I trust they may nut your approval. It has been published that with the opening of December, the Chicago Bess- j steel companies will close opera tions. They will thus throw out of em ployment twenty thousand men. They give two reasons for closing down. The first, a very insignificant one is the probabiiity4hi4 the tariff will flower ed in of so many low tar iff men elected to the next Congress. They claim that they will close out now while they have a heavy profit. The \ second reason given, is the decline in ; steel rails. Very recently the price hsgi j dropped down from SSO to $45 and one j company has even put the price df| j to $42. The only serious feature con* nected with the closing of these mills is J the great number of poor men being 1 thrown out of employment in the dead of winter when they so much need em ployment to support their families. She now couks to the front with characteristic eatireprise with anew society, the avowed object be iug to wage a bitter and relentless war on the nenisance of cigarette sinpiking. Ihe anti smoking" juveile society of Barnesville might profit by inco: pcraT_ iug the main plank |f the Philadelphia enterprise. l * The demure ladies of the Quaker City are the priinemovers ipthfs novel crusade and kheir plan of js as novel, as* the P’lisade is this:—They have registered the most solemn vows not to kiss in future any.young or old man who'is addicted to this sort of dis sipation, AYhal the Philadelphia ciga rette smokers will do remains to be seen The chances are that they will Wait un til the first meeting oft the association is held and attend in a body. If they find that the members of the society are of an age or a style of beauty fwheve kisvJ ing. cigaiette or no cigarette, would out of tbs question, they will probly decide to stand by the “weed” in the cheapest and most nasty form in which it presents itself. At all events, the questi for Philadelphia, an inter esting one, Thefinatter of kissing is not altogethsf modern, acccn*ding to all the minorities on the'subject, but it is the most modern question w hich has claimed the attention of Philadelphia in many years. CAMPAIGN ROOSTER. ; A way back in the forties, we Relieve about 1841, so runs the story, the Dem ocratic organ m IndLuu was conducted by Bird B. Chapman, a politician of some rupute. It was a season of politi cal activity, and the Democrats were rather despondent, as the tide seemed I against them. At some local election in ihaState, thoHJeinocrats;unexpected ly scooped the \\igs, and a letter from an active democrat communicating the views to the editor began with the in junction: “Crow Chapman, Crow.” Sui|! enough, Chapman did crow, and using tlir.e words as a head line in his next ib,y’s edition first introduced the Demofratica*Bter as the harbinger of was a taking one, and me symbol was quickly accepted and came into at least when the Democtfßs something to crow over. \ *IOW WORDS OF WISDOM ARE TAUGHT. literature, thoughts, instructions and intelligence are given in various forms. Christ sometimes spoke in par ables, Solomon in proverbs. /Esop in fables, Juvenal and Horrace in Satire, Addison and Johnson in allegory, Shakespeare and Ben. Jonson in dra ma, Scott and Dickens in novels a) and romances. The proverbs of all nations hj.ve been sought for as an embodiment ’{ and wisdom. And the sayings of wise men and philosophers have been inscribed upon pillars, and held in great veneration. Solomon, called the wisest man, said: “He that hidethhatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth slander is a fool. A hypocrite with his mouth destroyeth his neighbor; but through knowledge shall the just be delivered. A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty ton gue.” A |T> VEL CASE. Some funny law suit are gotten up by the yankee end of the American na tion occasionally. A rare breach of*i ro n ise case in New York has just jassed through the courts. A middle age man brought suit against a pretty widow for damages through breach o promise. He claims that she understood his pnr pose and was not averse to it. but that in the end she declijtfdto marry him, sj he demanded teir thousand dollars, one-tenth of this sum being the estimat ed value of tne presents and the reman de ra^nod-rate valuation of the affection which he expressed as well as that which had been promised but not delivered. Other m|n who are similar ly situated will grieve to learn that wliilf n cold hearted jury found against the defendant to the extent of value of the p-esents accepted they did not award the plantiff a single cent on the score of affection. Whether it was thought that a mam's outlay of love is its own reward or that no one is entitled to pay for something he did not lose because he did not have it, does not appear; but so cruel a verdict is likoly to make breach of promise suits by men rarer even than thev have heretofore been. To have the*world know that twelve men in a jury box can agree that a man’s affec tions are of n§ particular value does not improve the standing of mem among the fair sex. * “BUCHTJPAIBA.” New, quick, complete re 4 days,un o r nary affections, smarting, frequent difficult urination, kidney disease, at druggist. The annual report of one of the treasury auditors at throws some interesting iight on iJM branch of the federal machim* c the internal ltev<*uie I)epari men; appears that the total receipts the last fiscal year were, in round hers, one hundred and forty.six millfl dollars. Of this amount more than fiß million dollars went to pay the expense! of collection. Collectors were paid near ly half a million dollars; deputy collec tors andiblerks one and a half million dollars, storekeepers more than one mil lion and a quarter dollars; gaugers nearly one million and so on through a long list of minor officials, extraordinary and extra expenses. It is almost impossible to conceive of a more vicious system. It supports a small army of spies and informers, who make their living by preying on manu facturers, m Tchants and business men generally. jf There is no getting arouß the fact.
