W. interesting proof that the earth is
round. The images of distant objects
reflected in the Lake of Ueneva in calm
weather show just the degree of distor
tion which a careful mathematical cal
culation would predict on account of the
shape of the earth.
During a total eclipse of its surface
the moon assumes a copper red color,
which gradually [fades away as the
eclipse progresses. Mr. W. Mattieu
'N illiams accounts for this curious phe
nomenon by supposing that the illumin
ated port ion of the lunar surface, lack
ing the protection of an atmosphere,
must be made red hot by the sun s rays.
Only a thin layer of the moon's sub
stance is so heated, and when the sun’s
rays are withdrawn it rapidly cools
causing the failing away of the red col
or when in the shadow of the earth. If
his hypothesis is correct, Mr Williams
believes that the surface temperature
of the bright side of the moon must be
about 600 degrees. Of course the dark
side must be intensely cold, so quickly
does the heat pass into space after the
sun disappears. On the whole, the
moon must be ail uncomfortable
world.
Microscopic vision has separated ruled

according to Prof. Rogers, the evidence
that liner lines than that had been re
solved under the microscope is not con
clusive.

Mons. Toussaint has shown expei i
mentallyThe of eating
meatnearl^sw as i?now so generally
done. If the meat is unsound, the
germs of disease
tern. The most frelent
ous malady with which animals sniugrT
tered for food are affected is consump
tion, and even if the animal *is only
slightly diseased persons eating the un
cooked meat are liable to infection. The
raw juice pressed from a slightly
affected now's lung was used to inocu
late rabbits and young pigs, and all tire
subjects died in a short time from the
diseas# 4fhe experiment was repeated
with a portion of the juice which bad
been partially cooked, and the result
was the same. Only thorough cooking
was found to effectual* destroy all the
infectious germs. •
Recent evidence seems to indicate
that under certain conditions, vegetalde
matter may be converted into coal in
much less period than many -geologists
have believed to be necessary. At least
an approach to such conversion has been
discovered in some of the mines of the
U pper Hartz, in Germany, where some
Of the timbers originally used as sup
ports have been transformed into what
appears to be a genuine lignite, brown
il. The time occupied by the process
inot, it is believed, have extended
tend lour centauries—a very brief per
iod compared with that usually assign
ed to coal formations.
It has been shown by Prof. Loomis that
more rain falls on the eastern than in
the same latitude ou of
the continents. This is true every
where except in the higheP latitudes,
Thus the average rain fall at SanSfcun
cisco is only from a half to a third as
great in quantity as in the east of Penn
sylvania;aud the same or even more
striking difference may be found by
comparing Mlrocco with the Chinese
coast, and the west with the east coasts
of South Africa, Australia and South
America,
Mr. Jacob Reese is credited with hav
ing expressed tiiebelief that if it were
possible to produce a flameless combus-
tion the intensity and quantity of heat
obtained from a given amount of fuel
would be greatly increased thereby. Mr.
Thomas Fletcher of WArington, En
gland, hat succeeded m producing a
combustion without llame, and lately
gave at Owens College a striking prac
tical illustration of Mr. lieese’s theoiy.
He directed th£ flame of a simple gsi
blowpipe upon a three inch ball of iron
wire for a few seconds, and then itlew
out the flame. The in
creased and the wire
and ran into drops. He even succmP
ed in fusing clay, the in
tensity of heat being lmlWt greater
than ever before obtained with the fuel
used. Even in the dark, the burning of
the gas was shown to lie entirely invis
ible. It appears that flame really indi
cates an imperfect combustion. a
Prof. Germain See has called the at
tention of the Paris Academy of Medi
cine to anew medical alkaloid said to
resemble digitalis in its action but
having none of the objectionable
| properties of that drug. The new sub
stance is called convallarine, and is ob
tained from the lily of the valley. It
acts? powerfully on the heart, and
lowers the pulse very decidedly. The
plant itself is said to have been long
employed by Russian peasants for drop
(sical affections.
