The general business outlook over
the South is flattering. The Balti
more Manufacturers Record, desiring
to show the outlook for the winters
business sought letters from various
localities in the south, which it lias
published. The wheat crop about
High Point. N. C. is reported to be
the largest ever harvested, and is
now selling at 75 cents per bushel.
The crops, of every kind around
Oxana Ala. are reported to be good
—the cotton being an average crop.
The manufacturing business in this
section is growing, and there will be
a profitable winter business.
The outlook, at Ocala, Fla., is re
ported Hattering. The corn crop is
the best for many years Owing to
the labor having been drawn to the
railroads and orange culture not so
large area in cotton was planted.
Root crops of all descriptions are
remarkably good and the orange
crop will probably be the largest over
grown in the state. Beside hundreds
of trees are being set out. To show
how building is proceeding, about
throe hundred thousand dollars, in
tlie past year have been pi it .into buil
ding alone.
Therepori from Clarksville Tennes
see, the center of the large tobacco
district indicate that the receipts
will bo larger than ever before. The
wheat crop of that section was, fine.
The early corn was damaged by
drouth.
The cotton crop of Alabama is
ported to be badly damaged by
drouth, but it bethought it will bo lar
ger than last year.
The manufacturing interests
around Birmingham, Ala. are report
ed to be increasing.
The peanut crop from Norfolk. Va
is reported good and a big trade is ex
pected.
The reports from Texas are not so
good. Drouth has cut off the cotton
crops'two tlmds of last years crops.
No grain raised in some sections
for sale. The live Stock interest is
good.
In Mississippi there Ims been gen
orally a good to fair cotton yield
while the corn and small grain
yieldjhas been a bountiful one. Cotton
on the up lands has done well, but
in the bottoms in low places there
lias been too much rain as with us in
Georgia.
The stringiney of the money[market
which seemed at one t ime would pre
vent the farmers from making their
crops seems to have turned to their
benefit. The planters wore necessitat
ed to economize to a degree that they
have not done before and they are not
so much in debt. The cotton crop
has been produced with loss cost
than ever before and as the p lanters
are not so much in debt the chances
for a good trade:* thereby improved
Moreover the production of food
stuffs has been greater than ever be
fore and instead of the South’s spend
ing from $175,000,000 to $200,000.-
000 at the North and West for food
stuff's as she has heretofore annually
i done, this amount will this year be
I reduced probably by folly one-third,
i and possibly the reduction may be
| even larger. In industrial matters the
I prospect is equally cheering, and all in-
I dications point to a more rapid <le
| velopeinent of thejmaterial resource.-
iof the South this year than last: in
- fact, during the next twelve months
! more mills and factories, more foun
dries and machine shops, and more
mining enterprises will ]>r ihahiy be
started in the South than evernefore
! in the same length of time. Outside
j capitalists are begiiuiiug to appreoi -
j ate the advantages of the Sonlh. ami
j arc making liberal investments inall
kinds of enterprises—railroad, min
ing and manufacturing,—-while the
Soul hern people themselves :rv do
ing their full share in helping on the
development of their country. Tii •
great, exhibition at New Orleans
will do almost incalculable good
for the South, and will result in at
tracting millions of capital for invest
ment, und many thousands of enter
prising immigrants from other parts
of this country, us well as from Eu
rope. Looking over the whole field,
we feel safe in predicting great a<-
tivity in the South’s industrial inter
ests during 1884-85, with every assur
ranee of a constant and rapid (level
opmetu of all her vast rnateral re
sources.
Polhill’K Proclaim*t ion.
Hon. J. H. Polhill; chairman of
the State Democratic executive (lorn

which is commended to the atten

attributed to the unprecedentedly
