THE BARNESVILLE
C'wixode.v, Ga., Jan. 2(5, 'BS.
Editor Gazette :
Mr. A. M. Brown, our genial and
popular young merchant, haw this
day suspended business prepara
tory to making an assignment for
the benefit of bis creditors. We
are sorry to make this announce
ment on the part of our friend Mr.
I frown, for while it is true he tail
ed in business, h ■ is a young man
of exemplary character, a good
salesman, and a thorough going
energetic me reliant. The cause of
his failure is the small profits re
alized on his sale*for the past few
years, dull trade and poor collec
tions during the last three months.
Wo think, however, that his assets
will balance his liabilities. He has
given notice of his suspension to
his creditors, and we hope lie can
make satisfactory settlements with
out any great sacrifice of his goods.
prof. Gray will open his school
here to-day. He is anxious to
build up a fine school and make it
what it once was, a pride to our
little village.
The sleet on last Friday did a
great deal of damage to shade trees
on the streets, and in some of our
beautiful yards. 11.
Red Bone, Ga., Jan. 24th, 1885.
Mr. Editor: —
In my last 1 alluded to the im
proved tone of feeling among the
people since Cleveland’s election.
The foot that the administration of
the government is to change hands ;
in a short time, naturally creates
expectations that a change some
how or other for the bettor will in
evitably follow. But let us not lie
deluded with vain expectations. A
Democratic administration may be
highly favorable to the prosperity
of the country. This however, is
only one factor in producing a de
sirable result. It must never be
forgotten that the character and
conduct of the citiz' Hs have more
to do in bringing about “good
times”than anything else. A pop
ulation of sober, industrious, enter
prising men well nigh settles fa
vorably the whole question of a
nation’s welfare.
It is to he feared that our people
are not all contributing to the com
mon weal. We have too many
idlers. Our country is overstocked
with loafer’s clubs, There are too
many men standing h'j'.’Ut with
their hands in their pockets wait
ing for something to turn up, when
they ought to go to work vigorous
ly and make something turn up.
Can anybody tell why so many
farmers and others whose occupa
tions are in the country, have busi
ness IP town two or three times or
oftcuor a week —business that calls
them from home early and keeps
them late?
The endless round of occasion-*
that call men from their business,
that gather together large mixed
crowds—mcii, women and chil
dren, good, had and indifferent —
for picnics and other frolics, that
send large numbers on freijuent
railroad excursions to prominent
points to witness walking matches
and other disreputable entertain
ments, or to engage in jolifications
that are of doubtful propriety or
tendency, is a constant, drain on
the resources of the country, and
demoralizing in its effects upon so
ciety. It is a question worth con
sidering, whether a generation,
trained up under such influences
can be the safest guardians to take
charge of the best interests of so
ciety and the country. Prudent,
thoughtful men everywhere see and
deplore the evils at this point, but
who is bold enough to lead a cru
sade against these evils, or who
shall inaugurate a needed reform?
Other drawbacks upon our pros
perity might he hinted at, hut per
haps enough has been said at pres
ent. Let all do their best? Let
every one seek to fill his place well,
and a change for the better will
soon be plainly seen.
For storms, cold and had weth
er generally, this January, will
compare quite favorably with any
of its predecessors of late years.
Indeed it scans we are having an
unusual amount of rain. Ihe
weather has been quite unfavorable
for oats all through the fall and
winter up to the present, and con
sequently there has not been as
poor a prospect for an oat crop in
ten years. H. B.

Fence Law.
Mr. Fditor: —We read in the
Gazette a few weeks since an
article from Prof. \V. H. Wood
all, about the working of the stock
law in our district, Eflingcr’s, and
we write this to say that he told
the truth, hut not the whole truth,
it is even worse than he stated. He
said that our cows were shut up ;n
small pens in the summer and wire
poor. They arc still poor, and our
forage is almost gone. What are
we to do? If we could keep our
cows alive until spring, and could
then turn them out to* graze on the
mountains, we could get through.
But our stock have to be shut up
in small pastures, for we can t
fence in large areas, and a small
mountain pasture is-soon exhaust
ed, the native gifts?, dying out in a
year or two when eiostiy pastured.
We can’t pasture on the Idlld we
have open for cultivation, for it is
so limited that we need it all for
cultivation. Now, unless some
thing is done, if wy don’t sell out
our cow*, mivy of them will die.
Prof. Woodall, in his article said
that the music of the churn had
hushed. Not only that, hut the
lowing of the cows ami the grunt
of hogs will soon be silent among
ns, unless we are permitted to graze
our stock on the bountiful pasture
which nature has given us.
While we could raise our sup
plies at home, we could get along
with only a few dry goods from the
merchant, but if our (heat, milk
and butter supply is taken from us,
1 can’t sec how we are to ever pay
the merchant for what we will bo
compelled to buy.
Wc can’t see how we are to get
along under the “no fence ’ law.
We are being hurt and badly hurt,
and arc exceedingly anxious for
relief. We feel very grateful to
Prof. Woodall for what helms writ
ten on the subject, and hope that
with his assistance and the assis
tance of others, we can be given the
privilege of turning our stock out
again. lie desired that this be
done without injuring or troubling
anybody who prefers the “no fence
law. ' Mountain Valley.
