“SONS AND FATHERS’’
MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS
I want you all to know that from now on I ..will
have Two Bargain Days Each Week —Tuesdays
and Fridays are the days. I do this that I may show
to the people what bargain days and bargain prices
really mean. There is nothing in my entire stock too
good to be sold at a bargain. Everything is already
priced in regular every day prices— at what competi
tion would call "‘bargains,” but come in any Tues
day or Friday and let me show you bargains in
great variety that you will appreciate at a glance.
My Spring purchases are all in and ready for
display. The ladies all say that I have the prettiest
goods in town —of course they know.
Dress Goods
The weavers and designers skill has been used to
the limit, in my dress fabrics. Each piece and pattern
a wonderful revelation—-and those linen effects with
embroideries to match are too catchy to stay.
Embroideries & Laces
I went to first hands for embroideries and laces—
nothing old in the store, all new. As to prices don t
buy a yard from the other man until I show what direct
buying can do.
Clothing, Furnishings
Well I wont say a word to the men and boys but
leave them to beguided now as they have been in the
past by their own good j udgment. lam headquarters
and I know they will come to me. I still make a spe
cialty of Strauss & Bros. “High Art Clothing.”
I keep everything and want to sell everybody.
No extra per cent added on to credit customers.
Remember Tuesdays and Fridays for Bar
gain Days, and don’t buy before I see you.
Edgar L. Rogers.

BARNESVILLE GA., THURSDAY, APRIL 2, 1896
AN EAS rER ODE.
DOE* DEATH END ALL ?
BY JOHN R. LAMBDIN, LATE OF WASHING
TON, D. C.
First Cause, in all the universe immense,
When slept all things beneath the wings of
night,
Who to earth gavs't day, and drove darkness
hence,
Speak now to the Soul, say “Let there be light!’
Thy domain, the affections,reason, will,
The mental, moral, not the fleshly man,
Get Thy pure light his high aspirings fill,
And like a beauteous Bow, his Heaven o’er
spaul
Illume, thou Sun of man's true self, illume
A nobler, higher sphere than seusate life.
Arise; and with thy purer rays consume
His base propensities, and end their strife.
Teacher and Guide, all wise, infallable,
Thou alone caust Fife’s great mysteries un
seal,
Fift death’s dark pall that shut 6 the view and
tell
What lies beyond its dread secrets revea 1
Tis Thy divine prerogative alone
Life and immortality to bring to light;
To describe that country from whose dear bourn
No trav’ler returns, life's lamp to relight.
Helpless and blind, man’s highest efforts
To pierce the utter darkness of the tomb.
Can he 'gainst terror’s grisly king prtv il,
Despoil his kingdom, and light up its gloom?
Himself a prey aud victim, can be cope
Against the fell Destroyer of his race?
Smite aud slay the slayer, and bring sweet
hope
Alive again from her burial place?
Can he unaided solve his destiny?
The what am I, whence come, and whither go?
His boasted light ot reason finds no key
Which can unlock the seals and let him know.
Environed ns he is by flesh aud blood,
A Prisoner confined, himself the cell,
All helpless here, his help must come from
tied,
Tis He aloue who can this secret tell.
Does death end all, and the remorseless grave
Extinguish every joyous aspiration?
Was it for this Thou first his being gave
And then doomed him to annihilation?
O Thou Eternal One! who art the Fight
And Fife of all being, who all hast wrought,
Without Thee is naught but unending night,
With thee is Fife with every blessing fraught.
The limitless expanse thy Presence fills
And quickens into life inanity,
Thy supernal Beams vast creation thrills,
And gives life’s priceless crown, Immortality.
Then death ends not all,Tis but the portal
That admits the soul to a higher state,
Freeing it from the sensuous aud mortal
That it may rise to its divine estate.
A flame, lit from Thine Own vivific rays,
Nor waning, nor decadence shall it know
But with ns original burn and blaze
When nature’s feebler light shall cease to glow.
Current Notes,
The marshall or some body else
should look after those overhanging
fences that are obstructions to ped
estrains, in a few places in Barnes
visile. They are unsightly, dangerous,
and are in the way of progress, and
Barnesville is for progress,you know.
The flower rogues have made two
or three more raids during the week,
and have not only robbed the yards
of tie flowers, but have almost roo
btd the owners thereof of the determ
ination to raise auv more hyacinths.
It is an outrageously meau trick, but
it will never do to allow the devils to
drive the angelic influences out of
the world.
The Bai:nesville Gazette is not
for free silver, but it is njt fettered
by petty prejudice and bo advertises
the Crisp meeting at Griffin next Sat
urday very freely, and says a good
crowd is expected to come from
Barnesville. The crowd will be very
welcome from tuat place as well as
from all parts of the country sur
rounding Griffin. —Griffin News.
All around improvements are be
ing made. Mrs. R. J. Powell has ar
ranged to have her beautiful home
re-pain ted, and she will also proba
bly make other changes in toe home
and about tbe place. Work will be
gin shortly and no doubt the change
will be quite noticeable.
The last issue of the Baltimore
Manufacturers Record has this to
say übout Barnesville:
J. W. Stafford & Sons and G. E.
Huguley, of Barnesville, Ga., have
acquired the Barnesville Knitting
Mill, at Barnesvifl**, Ga, as slated
list week. They will put the plant
in operation with sixty bands as soon
as a competent suptrintendent can
be secured, with daily output of 200
dozer. G. E. Huguley is president,
and F. M. Stafford, secretury-treas
urer.
The spelling bee at Gordon Initi
tu!e last Friday afternoon was quite
interesting and exciting. The whole
school engaged in the cont -st, divid
ed into three classes. Miss Bessie
Floyd, one of the brightest and best
pupils in school, never missed a
word and consequently she was de
clared best, in the contest, with Miss
Emmie Crowder, another bright pu
pil, as second. Quite a number of
visiters witnesses! the spelling.
Mr. and Mrs. W. C\ Stafford will
gi-eatlv beautify tbe place recently
purchased by them, from Dr. Tyler,
on Thomastou street. The yard has
already been dug down and terraced,
which added considerably to the ap
pearance of the front. An elegant
new dwelling will be erected Ht an
early date, and this will then be one
of the prettiest and most desirable
places in Bainesville.
The|music department of Gordon
Institute now has sixty enrolled pu
pils, who ave in actual practise. This
is quite a good record aud tbe very
best work is being done. Mrs. Coch
rane is encouraged at the prospects
of the department.
The Sbakespeiran club.an organ
ization which is doiDg much to ad
vance literary taste and laleut in
Barnesville, has just been presented
with two sets of Shakespeare's works
by Ginn & Cos , and the American
Book Cos. The club appreciated the
gifts veiy much, as they are both
very valuable.
The painters are at work on the
Blalock House this we<-k, under the
supervision of Turner & Prout, and
in a few days this house will bs as
bright and cheerful as anew silver
dollar.
Messrs Robert Holmes and Hollis
Gray were out riding in th-ir hand
some new buggies Friday afternoon.
They have two as pretty vehicles ao
have been seen in Barnesville in quite
awhile. The buggies wore made by
Mr- Jackson G. Smith's shops and
were special jobs made to order.
These popular young men now touch
only in high places.
Mr. Edward Elder, county school
commissioner, has been visiting the
schools in different sections of the
county aDd he reports a good at
tendance and good work. This is
specially true where there are new
school houses as there the people and
pupils seem to take greater interest
in school work, Mr. Elder hopes to
see several other new houses built
this year in other sections of the
county. He is greatly concerned
about educational work and is work
ing energetically to advance the
cause.
We are told that the indication is
that there will be more visitors at
next commencement than ever before.
Many letters,from many people,from
many eeetionp, state already that
many visitors will be here. It will
be a grand occasion.
Thinking of commencement re
minds tbe Gazette that Gordon In
stitute really needs a little paint, A
coat or two would help its looks won
derfully aDd it will be money as an
advertisement well invested. Gin it
net be done ?
The World's Fair Tests
showed no baking powder
so pure or so great In leav
ening power as the Rol} al.
THE COOKING CLUB.
The cooking-dub was delightfully
entertained list Saturday afternoon
at the residence of Mr. J. W. High
tower.
1 Not only its president, but every
member of the organization has gone
cheei fully to work, and before many
month? roll round there will be
young ladies in our city that will be
able to suit the taste of the most fas
tidious man. That they may not be
selfish with their pleasure, ; t has been
agreed upon that one or more blush
ing youths shall be iuvited every
meeting to lend a helping hand to
the fair maidens.
These do not content themselves
merely with the culinary art, but
r acb out futher, even to the current
events of the day.
Literature finds its place in their
hearts and minds, and the discussion
of the noted author is iudeed a de
lightful privilege.
No two meetings are exactly alike,
and the next will be devoted tc fan
cy-work and sewing in general.
This meetiug will b, held Satur
day, April the fourth at the residmce
of Mr. li. A. .Stafford at half past
two o'clock. All young ladies invit
ed.
Miss Eunice Colwell,who has been
very sick,at her father’s residence on
Water Works Avenue has much im
proved. Her many friends wish her
a rpeedy recovery.
