Gordon Institute is one of the best schools in the United States for girls and boys. The course of stud> is fully the equal of that of our female colleges, has been arranged wwth
the greatest care, and long experience convinces the management that it is about what is needed for this section. ......
The school is not one of the “mushroon” order, sprung into existence yesterday, boasting loudly and claiming all things today, only to die tomorrow. It was founded in
as the Barnesville Male and Female High School, and has had a continuous existence since. In 1872 it changed its name to Gordon Institute, and under that name has become famous,
it has students from every Southern State, and today no institution in the State has patronage from a greater number of counties.
The policy of the institute has always been conservative but progressive. Nothing has been adopted until it has been approved, and nothing has been retained when its useful
ness was ended.' It has no fads, it sanctions no foolishness. Believing, as its faculty does that there is no “ royal road to learning,” that faculty has devoted itself with rare self-sacrifice
to the promotion of their students’ interests. They have required work, hard and persistent work of their students ; and to this, no doubt, is due the great reputation of the school.
The faculty itself is composed always of ladies and gentlemen of great abi ity and experience. There is not a member of it but has his diploma from one of the best institutions
and has had more than four years of successful experience before he entered the school. No novice is ever selected for any place in the faculty.
The faculty is composed of fifteen teachers, and the annual enrollment of the school approaches five hundred students.
Besides the Literary Department, instruction in Music, both Vocal and Instrumental; Art, Mechanical Drawing, Physical Culture for girls, and Military Science for boys is given.
Tne charges are extremely moderate—Twelve dollars per annum is the amount of tuition to be paid for instruction in all save Art and Music. In these charges are about three
dollars per month.
There is no better Husic Department in the South. Six New Kingsberry Pianos Recently Added.
The battalion of cadets usually enrolls about one hundred men, all of whom are required to be in full uniform—“cadet gray”—and are equipped with the very best pattern of
cadet rifles. There are three officers from the United States Army due the three largest colleges in the four States of Georgia, Alabama, Florida and South Carolina, one of whom is
detailed for service at Gordon Institute. The course of study per’sued under this officer is the same as at the United States Academy at West Point.
The school refers with pride to the following gentlemen who have either patronized it or have had exceptional means for testing its worth : Chancellor Wm. E. Boggs, Athens,
Ga.; Dr. Warren A. Candler, President Emory College, Oxford. Ga.; Ex-Governor W. J. Northen, Chief Justice T. J. Simmons and Hon. T. B. Cabiness.
The school issues a handsome annual catalogue which may be had by addressing its president.
