BARNESVILLE, CA.
THURSDAY, AUGUST jB, 1898.
MR STAFFORD HONORED.
Hon. Fleming G. tlußignon, chair
man of the State Democratic execu
live committee, has honored Barnes
ville in naming Mr. Frank M. Stafford
as one of the “State campaign com
mrttee,” which committee will have
cantrol of the campaign in the com
ing election. This is the first time
in years that Barnesville has had rep
resentation on this important com
niittee and the honor is highly appre
ciated by the friends of Mr. Stafford.
The honor is a high one and the
responsibility important, but Mr.
Stafford is capable and worthy of it
and Mr. dußignon's appointment
gives great satisfaction.
THE FRUIT INDUSTRY.
The fruit industry in Georgia is
just beginning to be appreciated by
the people. The returns from it are
opening the eyes of the people to its
importance. This year has shown to
the people around Bartlesville some
thing of its value to this community
and to this State.
The industry is in its infancy and is
full of promise, l ire Macon Tele
graph makes some timely calculations
which are interesting and instructive.
It has been only a few years since
the possibilities of Georgia fruit have
begun to be recognized, and yet the
one item of peaches has brought into
tjie State a million dollars. When
there is added to this the amount of
money saved to the State or brought
here by the fruit which has been sav
ed by canning, preserving, drying or
distilling, it is safe to say that the
peach crop of 1898 has been worth
to the State close to a million and a
half of dollars
To the peaches must be added the
melons, the plums, the pears and
small fruits sold, and a grand total of
$2,000,000 brought into the State by
the fruit crop will not be far from the
mark.
A great deal of the crop has been
lost beccuse being new' in the busi
ness we did not know how to save it
or had not made sufficient provision
to handle it.
In the course of time our people
will have learned the art of canning,
and preserving in other ways the sur
plus which will always accompany a
big crop, ami this great waste seen all
over the fruit country this )xar will be
avoided, and Georgia canned peaches
will take their places on the shelves of
the grocery stores ot the country
ahead o( those of California. ■;
This lesson will be learned in the
costly school of experience and by
usual s|o' processes peculiar to that
institution. It is hardly going too
far to claim that every orchard in the
State with its soil covered with rotting
fruit offers a potent argument in favor
of industrial education. If our boys
and girls on the farm had been afford
ed an opportunity to learn the art of
saving fruit which it was impossible
to market, the figures on the credit
side of the ledger would have been
greater this year by hundreds of
thousands of dollars.

Dr. \V. W. Landrum, pastor of the
First Baptist church, Atlanta, has
this to say about Lifsey Springs,
where he spent several days recently:
My stay at Lifsey Springs, Pike
county, was one of the most pleasant
of my life. The place offers the con
ditions of quiet rest, recuperation
and congenial surroundings to one
requiring a vacation from the
w'ork and worry of city life. The
baths are commodious and invigorat
ing; the atmosphere is pure, the hotel
having an elevation of eleven hun
| dred feet; the accommodations are to
! thy satisfaction; the fare is substan
tial country diet, aad fruit is plentiful.
Besides all this, the terms are reason
able.- I am glad to commtnd Lifsey

Mr. J. B. P. Milner is getting his
fine ginnery in excellent shape for the
coming cotton season. His ginnery is
one of the best and most complete in
this section of the state, but he has
added another fine gin and is there
fore better prepared for ginning than
he was last season. He can now
gin easily four bales per hour and he
will leave nothing undone to give the
cotton planters the best satisfaction.
Mr. Milner will also be in the market
to buy cotton seed and he says he is
going to buy every seed possible. He
will buy at his ginnery and Mr. Otis
Stocks will reprent him on the streets.
Mr. Milner solicits the patronage of
the people and he guarantees the very
best possible service.
There in more Catarrh in this section
of the country than all other diseases
put together, and until the last few years
was supposed to be incurable. For a
great many years doctors pronounced, it
a local disease, and prescribed local
remedies, and by constantly failing to
cure with local treatment, pronounced it
incurable. Science lias proven catarrh
to be a constitutional disease, and there
fore requires constitutional treatment.
Hall’s Catarrh Cure, manufactured by
F. J, Cheney & Cos., Toledo, Ohio, is the
only constitutional cure on the market.
It is taken internally tu doses from 10
drops to a tcaspoonful. It acts directly
on the blood and the mucous surface of
the system. They offer one hundred
dollars for any case it fails to cure. Send
for circulars and testimonials. Address

THE EXCELLENCE OF SYRUP OF FIGS
is due not only to the originality and
simplicity of the combination, but also
to the care and skill with which it is
manufactured by scientific processes
known to the California Fig Syrup
Cos. only, and we wish to impress upon
all the importance of purchasing the
true and original remedy. As the
genuine Syrup of Figs is manufactured
by the California Fig Syrup Cos.

Prof. Kemp Will Nut Return.
The Gazette has a letter from
Mrs J. E. Kemp, from which we make
the following extract, as it is a matter
in which many people here are in
terested :
“The physicians in the west advise
Mr. Kemp not to return to Georgia
for a year at least; in fact they tell
him it would be suicidal to do so.
We feel sad to give up our home even
for a short while among the people of
Barnesville and I am sure we will
never find a place so dear to us. But
this sacrifice must be made ;n order
to regain health.”
Mrs. Kemp will be in Barnesville
soon and she wants to dispose of their
household furniture, all of which is
new. Also a lot of fine chickens.
No doubt there will be ready sale for
these articles.
It is certainly with great regret that
the people here learn ot the condition
referred to in Mrs. Kemp's letter.
Prof. Kemp is a fine teacher and his
place in Gordon Institute will be hard
to fill. Prof. Kemp and his entire
family are exceedingly popular in
Barnesville and great regret is express
ed that they will not continue to live
in this city.

At Camp Northen, at Griffin, where
there are a number of soldier boys
tronr this section, are now about 1,100
men. Surgeon Major L. B. Grandy
says that the health of Camp Northen
has been remarkable and that the
1 hospital now has only a tew malarial
patients. 'There is no evidence of
typhoid or other fevers. He also
i says the hospital has been made most
comfortable by the cots and other
necessaries that the ladies have
j thoughtfully bestowed. Dr. Grandy
lias had his hands full since he has
been in camp, but he says that he is
glad that it was with examinations in
-1 stead of sickness.
About one month ago my child,-which
I is fifteen months old, had an attack of
diarrluva accompanied by vomiting. 1
gave it such remedies as are usually giv
en in such cases, but as nothing gave re
lief we sent for a physician aid it was
under his care for a week. At this time
the child had been sick for about ten
i days and was having about twenty-five
operations of tlie bowels every twelve
I hours, and we weJe convinced that un
-1 less it soon obtained relief it would not
live. Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and
Diarrhtva Remedy was recommended,
and I decided to try it. I soon noticed
a change for the better 1 by its continued
use a complete cure was brought about,
and it is now perfectly healthy.—C. L
