BARNESVILLE. GA.
THURSDAY, OCT. 13, 1898.
THE ELECTION.
The state and county election last
week resulted in a magnificent victory
for the democratic ticket throughout
the state. Hon. Allen I). Candler
was elected governor by over 60.000
majority. It was quiet every where
but the majority was a splendid one.
The populist party lost heavily in
every section of the state. It is a
death knell to the populist party, as
the members of the party realize the
utter uselessness of keeping up the
fight.
Pike county did well. The demo
crats voted the ticket straight almost
and the average majority was about
475 for state and county officers. It
was a fine victory and there was gen
eral rejoicing over the result. The
following are the local officers elected
by the democrats of Pike county:
Senator for the 22d Secatorial Dis
trict,
JOHN F. REDDING.
Representative in the House of Rep
resentatives,
J. C. BEAUCHAMP.
Clerk of Superior Court,
J. B. MATHEWS.
Sheriff,
J. H. MILNER.
Receiver of Tax Returns,
CHARLES MATTHEWS.
Tax Collector,
S. A. HOWELL.
County Treasurer,
WILBUR F. JONES.
County Surveyor,
R. D. ADAMS.
Coroner,
J. L. HANIL.
ALLEN A CANDIDATE.
The appointment of Hon. E. J.
Reagan as judge of the Flint circuit
does not end the contest for that
honor before the next legislature.
Hon. J. Y. Allen, of Thomaston, who
was a candidate tor the appointment
before Governor Atkinson, has an
nounced that he is a candidate for
the position before the legislature.
He proposes to make an active race
for the place and of course is hopeful
ofaucceess. He and Judge Reagan
are both strong men and the race
may be an interesting one.

Bate’s Jewelry Company.
In 1882 in the small town of Ac
worth, Ga., J. FI. Bate began his ca
reer, in a modest way, as a business
man and launched upon the commer
cial sea his first venture in the jew
elry business.
By close application to business,
correct business methods and a wom
derful amount of energy and “stick
toitiveness” he prospered and grew
so that in 1889 he opened a branch
house in Marietta, Ga., and this ven
ture proving a success in 1897 he
opened still another place in Barnes
vi 11, Ga., but he confirmed the wis
dom of his way when in 1897 he or
ganized “The Bate Jewelry Com
pany in Anniston and to day it easily
leads all his other establishments.”
A great benefit which the Bate
Jewelry Company enjoys and divides
with its customers is that by reason
of buying in large quantities, in order
to supply all of the stores, and buying
strictly for cash, the large discounts
for quantity and cash” purchases are
saved and as mentioned above, the
customer gets the benefit of all.
The Bate Jewelry Company guar
antees every article sold to be just
as represented and if you, gentle
reader, will consult Dunn or Brad
street’s mercantile agency you will
find that their guarantee is “18 Kar
at.”
This strong jewelry establishment
is receiving the reward of its merit
and “The Hot Blast" is rejoiced at
the evidence of prosperity as shown
by the improvement being made, and
to be made, in their store corner No
ble and 11 streets. —Anniston Hot
Blast.

TRIBUTE OF LOVE
To C'apt. W. D. itedding From Barnes
rille Methodist Sunday School.
That “death leaves a shining
mark," has been most truly exempli
fied in the death of our venerable
brother and associate, “an Israelite
indeed, in whom there was no guile ”.
For over four score years God
loaned him to the world to bless and
brighten, and when his work was
finished, he fell on sleep and was gath
ered to his fathers.
His fidelity to his highest concep
tions of duty challenges our admira
tion. His regular and prompt at
tendance at Sunday school, was a
beautiful object lesson and should in
spire us to greater zeal. The mel
low influence of his gentle, Christian
character will live long in our memo
ries and stimulate us to follow him as
he followed Christ.
We shall miss his genial smile, his
cordial hand grasp, his sympathy and
Christian fellowship. If we could dis
cern with spiritual eyes we might see
him now as then, doing his Fathers
will.
Resolved, That in his promotion our
Sunday school has lost one of its
most punctual and consistent mem
bers,
That we extend to his family our
warmest sympathy,
That we dedicate a page in our
minute book to his memory inscribed
with this preamble and resolutions;
also request the Gazette to publish
the same.
Lives of good men all remind us—
We may make our lives sublime.

The pecan trees set out several
years ago in the parks in the center
of the city, are bearing this year, one
of them containing a good many

Mr. J eft McDowell during Mr. G. E.
Huguley’s first administration and
were presented to the city by Mr.
Edward Elder. Mr. McDowell gath

Horse for Sale.
As I do not need two horses, I
am thinking of selling my large, bay
combined saddle and harness horse.
Should I not accept an offer which
I've had on him from Macon I will
keep him here for about a week from
now. To those who may not know
this horse I will state that he com
bines more valuable qualities than
any horse I ever owned or handled.
He is absolutely sound in every
way, and free from any kind of tricks.
It is exceedingly rare that such a
horse as this is ever offered. I would
be willing to sell him for much less
than would be necessary in case a
considerable feed bill is run up at a
city stable. R. O. Cotter.
ROBBED THE GRAVE.
A startling incident of which Mr.
John Oliver of Philadephia, was the
subject, is narrated by him as follows.
“I was in a most dreadful conditi®n.
My skin was almost yellow, eyes
sunken, tongue coated, pain contin
ually in back and sides, no appetite,
gradually growing weaker day by day.
Three physicians had given me up.
F'ortunately, a friend advised trying
“Electric Bitters.” and to my great
joy and surprise, the first bottle made
a decided improvement. I continued
their use for three weeks, and am
now a well man. I know they saved
my life, and robbed the grave of an
other victim.” No one should fail to
try them. Only 50 cents per bottle
at W. A. Wright Drug Store.
