much dreaded by navigators because it

Unfortunate Cretans.
Even in ancient times to be born a
Crete meant a life of misery and hard
ship. They were born then as abject
a race as they are now. Epiinenides,
as quoted by St. Paul, said : “The
Cretans are always liars and evil
beasts.” In the Levant to this day
to say that a man is a Crete is by no
means a compliment. The island is
inhabited by people who speak the
Greek language and hold the Greek
faith. They have inherited the beau
ty and, to a certain extent, the hero
ism of their immortal ancestors. They
are acute, genial and comely in their
manners; the humblest barefooted
peasant girl holding her distaff under
her arm and spinning by the roadside,
exactly as described by Homer, had
a profile as perfect, a form as graceful
and an address as courteous as though
she were some princess in disguise.
One of the most interesting epi
sodes of the Greek revolution in 1526
is of a certain cavalry officer who sur
prised a detachment of Turks, routed
them and captured their 20,000
sheep. Upon this a Turkish general
marched over to them with 5,000
men and recaptured the sheep. The
general posted his men behind low
earthworks. One redoubt of their
opponents was held by a young cap
tain, with 100 picked men, who tied
their legs together and swore to hold
the spot or die. They all fell at their
posts but one, who tied, and long
afterward a row of skeletons could he
seen bleaching their bones, which
were bound loosely together with
shreds of girdles.

Won With ft Word.
I am sometimes startled at the ease
with which a soul can be won. And
I aiti often humiliated when I think
of the many times and the
many opportunities in my life
which I have wasted and not
used for the winning of souls to
Christ. I want to illustrate the ease
with which a soul can be won. Not
very long ago, in a strange city, as the
hackman got down off his box and
opened the door to let me out, I
dropped a quarter in his hand and as
I did so 1 grasped his hand and said
to him: “Good night; I hope to
meet you again in glory.” I had often
done that, and I thought nothing of
it in this case. I went into the house,
met my host and retired to my room
for the night. About midnight my
host knocked at my chamber door
and said : “Chaplain, that hackman
has come back and says that he has
got to see you tonight. I told him he
had better wait until morning, but he
said: ‘No, sir, I must see him tonight
and I know that he will be willing to
see me.’ ” When the hackman came
up, a broad shouldered, rough-looking
man with a great whip in his hand, he
stood there in my presence with the
tears rolling down his cheeks like
rain. Said he : “If I meet you in
glory I have got to turn around. I
have come to ask you to pray with
me.” What a privilege it was to pray
with that man ! What a privilege to
point him to Jesus —and yet I never
saw him before in all my life. There
are 10,000 men in this country that
have not had an invitation to come to
God in all their lives. Bishop Mc-

Bismarck's Retort.
This anecdote is told of the late
Prince Bismarck: *One evening,
when the German troops were before
Paris, Duke Ernst of Saxe Coburg -
Gotha began grumbling in Bismarck's
presence because the iron cross of
the first class, given for bravery in the
field of battle, had been distributed
too indiscriminately. Bismarck re
plied that the distribution of such
decorations was always a delicate and
difficult task; “for." said he, “con
spicuous merit has to be rewarded,
but in some cases, conspicuous posi
tion, with or without merit, cannot be
overlooked. “See now,” he said,
“Moltke has it, Roon has it, Blumen
thal has it. Excellent! But,” he
added, “your highness and I have it,
too, and surely it is not. for us to
grumble."

The Queen’s Hope.
At one of the almshouses in the
Isle of Wight, there lived an old
woman of the name of Baxter, a de
scendant of the once ■well known
Richard Baxter, who had reached the
surprising age of 104 years. The
queen, on hearing of her, expressed a
wish to see her, and came to the
almshouse one day to pay her a visit.
After sitting for some time beside her
bed the queen rose to go, when the
old woman, fixing her eyes upon her,
said : “May I ask your majesty one
question ?" “You may ask me any
thing you like,” was the reply. Slow
ly and earnestly the question came :
“Shall we meet again in the home
above ?”
The queen was silent for a mo
ment, then bending her head, so that
her face was hidden by her handker
chief, she replied: “Yes, we shall
meet again, by the grace of God, and
through the blood of our Lord Jesus
Christ.”—The Primitive Catholic.

"To Hay on Tick.”
"To buy on tick”—that is, on credit
—in something that does not seem to
have much connection with the move
ment of a clock, and yet it is a figura
tive reference to the same thing. The
syllables "tick-tack-tock” are used ev
erywhere to represent sharp, quick
sounds of various kinds, with the move
ments that cause thorn, whence the tick
tack of a clock or tbo ticking of any
quick, light motion, as the stroke of a
pen or jieneil that "ticks” off onr or
ders. Hence to take a thing "on tick"
is to have it marked with a tick or
stroke of the pen.—E. P. Andrews in
St. Nicholas.

W The Anvil Bird.
At flask in the wikis of tho gloomy
Brazilian. forest you will think it
strange to hear tho clink of a hammer
on an anvil. Yon would imagine that
you were approaching some settlement,
and the picture of tbo ruddy glow of
the forge would come up before your
eyes.
But if your guide were a native, he
would tell you that the sound was made
ty a campauero, as they call it, al
though to foreigners it is known as tho
anvil bird.
This bird is n little larger than a
thrush. The plumage is perfectly white,
tho eyes are a pale gray color, and tho
naked throat and skin around the eyes
are of a fine bright green, while its
more northerly relative is orange and
black, very much like our oriole.
It is generally ill the early part of the
day that the campauero sends forth the
woudeiful note that can be heard at a
distance of three miles. Marvelous in
deed must bo the mechanism of the vo
cal organs of so small a bird to produco
so farreaehiug a note, but there is no
doubt of the fact, for many travelers
have heard the strange sound uttered
by the bird when perched on the top
most branch of some withered tree. —

Paper Bajjs For Travelers.
Comfort in traveling is an important
consideration, and tho newest idea for
a journey is one worth regarding. Dodg
ing railroad cinders and dust is some
thing not to bo thought of. When a
thoroughly clean railroad trip is possi
ble. the millennium will have arrived,
and this period is still, according to all
beliefs, a long distance off. But, owing
to a simple thought of a practical man,
the traveler can now protect his or her
hat, which was out of the question be
fore.
A humble paper bag. obtained from
the nearest grocer, is the god of the ma
chine. This is folded compactly and
stowed away in the pocket (in the hand
bag or purse if the traveler is a woman
and is pockctless). Before the oars start
the bag is Opened, the hat placed there
in, the hag pinned across its mouth and
the whole laid in the rack. Thereafter,
until the destination is all but reached,
the traveler need have no thought of
his headgear, for no dust or cinders can
reach it. It will bo found in the best of
condition upon opening. So simple is
this device that it is a wonder it Wsh
never thought of before.—Now York
Herald.
