FACTS ABOUT DIAMONDS-
o
.South Africa is the world's greatest
diamond mine, and the United States
is the best market in the universe for
diamonds. The exports oi diamonds
from South African diamond fields
exceed per annum, and
the world's total output is about
£4, 000,000. Of this total the Unit
ed States bins about 2,500,000
pounds’ worth, almost entirely in cut
stones.
Whil e tariff changes have affected
somewhat the diamond trade in the
United States, and have recently pro
moted the business of diamond cut
ting and setting there, they have been -
without serious effect upon the Amer
ican market, which fer diamonds is
the best in the world.
In the United States one is im
pressed with the extraordinary popu
larity and almost lavish use of dia
monds. Not only are there more
diamonds there than in any other part
of the world, but they are in more
general use.
The mo,st valuable individual dia
monds of the world’s supply are sel
dom worn. The largest known dia
mond weighs 366 carats. The value
of the famous kohinoor, which weighs
103 carats, is 100,000 pounds, but
the value of diamonds is not wholly
regulated by weight, color being an
important factor.
Until a century and a half ago the
world’s diamond field was India, and
for nearly a century India held this
position. Then the finding of dia
mond mines in Brazil brought South
American diamonds into the market,
and in 1868 the South African or
Cape diamond fields were discovered,
and have been worked with great
profit ever since, while the Brazilian
fields have been practically abandon
ed.
The South African diamond field
covers 15,000 square miles, and one
field—the Kimberly, covering nine
acres—has produced more than 20,-
Ojjo,ooo pounds worth of diamonds
since 187 r.
The present annual export of dia
monds from the South African dia
mond fields averages 1,500 pounds in
weight, to a value of over 3,000,000
pounds.
Two thousand white and 20,000
native miners are employed therej
For some reason which is not very
plain, although the products of dia
mond mines have been for many
years in territory owned and controll
ed either by Knglaud, Spain or Por
tugal, the business of diamond cut
ting has centered m and about the
Netherlands, and particularly Bel
gium. The first guild of diamond
cutters was established in the town
of Burges, in that country, more than
500 years ago, and since that time
the business has been a very profita
ble one, both in Antwerp and Ams
terdam.- -Canton Spare Moments.

Cultivate Kindness.
Kindness is more than amiability;
it implies thoughtfulness and heart
culture. Many Christian people are
brusque and severe without thought
that they commit wrong, but they
have failed to cultivate the most beau
tiful grace of kindness. It is not
enough to try not to be unkind, for
unless one seeks to be kind he has
fallen short of duty. No one can be
as good as he should he without striv
ing to cultivate kindliness of spirit.
“Charity suffereth long and is kind.”
Kindness disarms prejudice and hate
and awakens confidence, over gloomy
smile, sweetens bitter thoughts,
strengthens the faint and leads the
sinful from paths of sin. Of all things
in life which we may regret, kindness
is one that causes no repentance, but
in retrospect there is no more bitter
pang than remembrance of kind things
we might or should have said, but left
unsaid, but left unsaid, with deeds
undone. Wordsworth says:
That best portion of a good man's
life.
His little, nameless unremembered
acts of kindness and of love.
In all departments of life, church
and home, kindness is a lubricant
which makes the hardest task easy
and the heaviest burden light.—The

Wilful Blindness.
As we look through a telescope and
obtain a glimpse of the wonders it re

which have been attained by experts

When we learn something of their

Fellowship with Christ is the power

A Diet for Relieving Rbennmtism.
Unquestionably the most active
cause of rheumatism, as well as of
migraine, sick headache and Bright s
| disease, neurasthenia, and a number
I of other kindred diseases, is the gen
! eral use of flesh food, tea and coftee
and alcoholic liquars. As regards
remedies, there are no medical agents
which are of any permanent value in
the treatment of chronic rheumatism.
The disease can be remedied only by
regimen—that is by diet and training.
A simple dietary', consisting of fruits,
grains and nuts, and particularly the
free use fruits, must be placed in the
placed in the front rank among the
radtea curative measures. Water, if
taken in abundance, is also a means
of washing out the accumulated
poisons.
An individual afflicted with rheu
majism in any form should live, so far
as possible, an out-of door life, taking
daily a sufficient amount of exercise
to induce vigorous perspiration. A
cool morning spong, followed by vig
orous rubbing, and a moist pack to
the joints most seriously affected, at
night are measures which are worthy
of a faithful trial. Every person who
is suffering from this disease should
give the matter immediate attention,
as it is a malady which is progressive,
and is one of the most potent causes
of premature old age and general
physical deterioration. American
nervousness is probably more ofttfn
due to uric acid, or the poisons which
it represents, than to any other one
cause.—Good Health.

His Own Grandfather.
George H. M , of Titusville,
Pa., committed suicide the other day
on discovering that he was his own
grandfather. He left the following
letter:
“I married a widow who had a
grownup daughter. My father visited
our house very often, fell in love with
my step-daughter and married her.
So my father became my son-in-law
and my step-daughter my mother, be
cause she was my father's.wife. Some
time afterward my wife had a son.
He was my father’s brother-in-law
and my uncle, for he was the brother
of my step mother. My father's wife,
who is my step-daughter, had a son.
He was, of course, my brother, and
at the same my grandchild, for he was
the son of my daughter. My wife
was my grandmother, because she
was my mother's mother. I was my
wife’s husband and grandchild at the
same time, and as the husband 01
a person’s grandmother is hi grand
father, I am my own grandfather.”

Sails for motivd power were used
from 1829 to 1830 on the South Caro
lins and Georgia Railroad, the oldest
railroad in the United States, and,
excepting a few short lines built in
England in the early twenties, the
oldest in the world. When the wind
was right thirteen passengers and
three tons of iron were carried at the
rate of ten miles an hour. This means
of locomotion, however, came to an
abrupt end one day, when the wind
suddenly changed and took the sail,
mast, sailors and all overboard in a
gale which drove the cars at fifteen
miles an hour.
