Over on Capitol Hill there's a Sun
day School where a young man I
; know is superintendent, says
the Washington Post. He is an
earnest, conscientious young fellow,
and disagreeable as it mav sound in
me to say it, he means well. Sunday
before last he arose to give a little
talk.
‘•Dear children,” said he, “I am
very glad to be with you this morn
ing and when .1 look into your happy
i faces I am sure that all of you rejoice
| with me in the privilege of gathering
together this morning to sing our
1 songs of praise and to listen to the
j lessons your dear teachers”—but then
• you know what he said.—You know
‘ what they always say—heaven bless
them for saying it. too! Anyway,
j this particular superintendent said
that this beautiful Sabbath was “only
a promise of the blissful hereafter, ot
the happy land to which we all want
to go.”
“And what is the happy land?” he
asked. The small boys on the front
seat kicked eack other surreptitiously
and viciously, but nobody spoke till
little Georgia said, with a tone mid
way between a sniff and a gurgle:
“Heaven.”
‘•Ah, that's it! that's it!” said the
superintendent. “Little Georgie knew
it. It is heaven. And we all want
to go there. And now, children, can
you tell me what kind of little boys
go there ?” ~ HPH
Georgia was emboldened by praise.
His head was dizzy with' success. He
rose in his place.
“Dead ones,” he bawled.

Strength of Character.
Strength of character constists of
two things—power of will and power
of self restraint. It requires two
things, therefore, for its existence—
strong feelings and strong command
over them. Now, it is here we make
a great mistake; we mistake strong
feelings for strong character. A man
who bears all before him—before
whose frown domestics tremble, and
whose hursts of fury make the chil
dren of the household quake—be
cause he has his will obeyed, and his
own way in all things, we call him a
strong man. The truth is, that he is
the weak man; it is his passions that
are strong. He, mastered by them,
is weak. You must measure the
strength of a man by the power of the
feelings he subdues, not by the power
of those which subdues him. And
hence composure is very often the
highest result of strength. Did we
never see a man receive a flagrant
insult, and only grow a little pale and
then reply quietly? That is a man
J-piritually strong. Or (lid we never
; see a man in ambush stand as if carv
ed out of solid-rock, mastering him
self? Or one bearing a hopeless
daily trial remain silent, and never
tell the wo r ld what cankered his
home peace ? That is strength. He
who, with strong passions, remain
chaste; he who, keenly sensitive, with
manly powers of indignation in him,
can be provoked, and yet remain him
self, and forgive, these are strong
men —the spiritual heroes.—F. W.
Robertson.

Paying the Cook.
In old times to dino with a nobleman
cost more in tips to the servants than a
club dinner. .Tamos Payn relates that
Lord Poor, a well named Irish peer, ex
cused himself from dining with the
Duke of Ormond upon tho ground fl at
!he could not atlord it. “If yon will
| give mo tho guinea I have to pay your
j cook (fancy!), I will come as often as
you choose to ask me, ” which was ac
cordingly done. The duke, however, had
j not the pluck to stop the practice. Lord
Taafe, a general officer iu the Austrian
service, did what ho could. He always
attended his guests to the door. When
they put their hands into their pockets,
he said: “No. If yon do give it, give it
to me, for it was I who paid for your
dinner. ” To Sir Timothy Waldo must
be given the credit of putting an end to
i the monstrous practice. After diuuer
with the Duke of Newcastle he put a
crown into the cook’s hand. If was re
jected. “I do not take silver, sir.”
| “Very good, and I dd not give gold. ”
This courageous rejoinder “caught on, ”
and the day of vails to cooks was over.

ATHLE.TIGS.
On Saturday Nov. sth, there was a
hotly contested game of foot ball
played between the Juniors and Soph
mores. The Juniors were defeated
to the tune of Bto 4. This is owing
Ito the fact that the Juniors have
not very many players and the re
mainder of the class are afraid to play
on account of getting their faces
hurt. The Sophmore class is very
large and the most of them play good
ball. The game was marked with
many fumbles on the part of the Ju
niors. The boys that deserve their
names mentioned in these columns
for their beautiful tackling are: Holey
E., Hatnes, Hewlette, Goodwyn and
Turner. The last two named boys
did some excellent playing. Mr.
Turner .made some very fine tackles,
and Goodwyn was the one that took
the ball over twice for the Sophmores.
Mr. Hewlette who is here taking a
normal course, took the ball over for
the Juniors once. As neither side
could kick goal, the score remains as
above mentioned. The two teams
will meet again on the 12th. The
line up was as fallows:
Juniors. Sophmores.
Curry, Center, Campbell R.
Hunter, Rt. Guard, Hosford.
Hodge, Lt. Guard, Davis.
Cornelle, Lt. Tackle, Reviere.
Hughes, Rt. Tackle, White.
Alconr, Rt. End, Haines.
C'ampbelle, Lt. End, Hammette.
Hewlette, Qt. Back, Blount.
Turner, Lt. Half Back, Boley.
Hardeman, Rt. H. Back, Goodwyn.
Brooks, Full Back, Haines.
Summary. Touch downs, Turner,
Haines and Goodwyn. Time, first
half, 30 minutes. Second; half 25
minutes. Refree, Elder E. Lines
men Griger and Mine.
The game of foot ball that was to
be played between the Jnniors and
Sophmores was decided not to have
a'class game, but to choose sides.
The game commenced at four o'clock
and was a hotly contested game.
Boley and Turner, captains. Mr.
Boley won the toss and selected the
goal on the north side of the field.
The game commences. Boley kicks
the ball to the opponents ten yard
line, the ball is caught and returned
to the center of the field and goes
from one territory to another, finally
the ball is carried over for a touch
down by Turner, failing to kick goal
the score stands 4 to o in favor of
the Juniors. As the first half was
very near up this was the only touch
down made in this half. The second
half begins with a good kick off by
Elder W., the hall is caught and re
turned to the center of the field, the
■ teams line up and the game begins to
I get more interesting, as both sides
; play good ball and are determined
i not to let the other score in this half,
they fight from one territory to the
other until the last part of the second
half Boley's side goes over for a
tocch down. Boley kicks goal, score ,
4t06 in favor of the Sophs. The !
teams line up again but neither side j
scores as time is up. The boys that
deserve special mention are, Hew \
lette, Boley E., Elder and Haines.
The following is the way the teams
lined up:
I Christie. Center, Hicks, j
Smiley, Rt. Guard, Simmons F. j
Douglass, Lt. Guard, Hosford.
Hughes, Rt. Tackle, Davis, j
Cornelle, Lt. Tackle, Campbell R.
Reviere, Rt. End, Blount.;
Campbell C. Lt. End, Haines.
Alcorn, Qt. Back, Boley E. 1
Hardeman, Rt. H. Back, Haines. !
Turner, Lt. H. Back, Murphey. j
