The gypsy minstrels form a caste by
themselves. Their appearance is always
more swarthy thau that of other Hun

times purposely fantastic, and their

one of his gypsies takes a dinner plate

The Oldest Patent.
The question as to the holder of
file oldest patent in this country has
brought out from the heirs of Joseph
Jencks some additional faots which
tend to show that he was the first
inventor in this country. Patents
granted from the sovereign power 01
England for land, water and other
privileges were not uncommon in
early colonial times. Joseph
Jencks of Lynn, Mass., a number of
years previous to receiving a patent
for an invention of a scythe had been
granted one for “an application of
water power to mills.” Biographical
notes state that Mr. .Jencks intro
duced to the Massachusetts colony
the idea of patenitng inventions, and
that he might protect and introduce
his ideas seems to have been a rea
son for his coming to the new country.
The grass scythe, with its short, thick
blade, like a bush scythe, consisted
in lengthening the blade, making it
thinner and welding a square bar at
the back and strengthening it. To
day this scythe, practically un
changed, is used in Europe and
America. The patent was withheld
from Mr. Jencks for nine years, as it
was thought to be too valuable to be
monopolized.—Hartford Courant.
Great Wnteli, (in*nt Cow.
Seven years ago a farmer living west
of Webster, City, la., hung his vest on
the fence in the barnyard, and as a re
sult of it a wonderful story is told.
A calf chewed up a pocket in the gar
ment in which was a standard gold
watch. Last week the animal, n staid
old milk cow, was butchered for beef,
and the timepiece was found in such a
position between the lungs of the cow
that the process of respiration, the clos
ing in and tilling the lungs, kept the
stem winder wound up, and the watch
had lost but four minutes in the seven
years.—Chicago Times-Herald.

Who would prescribe only
tonics and bitters for a weak,

PRECIOUS METALS.
Golf! null I'lntlniim Are Chfnp Clin
imrofl With Some of Them.
“The majority of people when asked
to name the most precious metals usu
ally mention gold us first, platinum as
second and silver as third,” said tho
proprietor of a largo assaying and refin
ing establishment to I lie writer recently.
“Now, let us woo iiow near tin* truth
they would be. Gold is worth about
¥250 per pound troy, platinum $l3O,
and silver about sl2.
“Wo will now compare these prices
with those of tho rarer and less well
known metals. To take them in alpha
betical order barium, tho metal which
Davy isolated from its ore, baryta, in
1808, sells for SOSO a pound when it is
sold at ail, and calcium is worth SI,BOO
a pound. Ciriuni is a shade higher. Its
cost is SIOO an ounce, or $1,020 per
pound. These begin to look like fabu
lous prices, but they do not reach the
highest point, chromium being S2OO.
Cobalt falls to about, half the prico of
silver, while didymium, tho metul iso
lated by Masander, is the same price
us calcium. Then comes gallium, which
is worth $3,250 ail ounce. With this
metal tho highest price is reached, and
it may well be culled the rarest and
most precious of metals.
“Glucium is worth $250 per ounce;
indium, $150; iridium, SOSB a pound;
juuthanium, $175, and lithium, SIOO
per ounce. Nidium costssl2B per ounce;
osmium, palladium, platinum, potas
sium and rhodium biiug respectively
SOIO, S4OO, $l3O, $32 and $512 per
pound. Ktrontinm costs $l2B an ounce;
tautaum, $144; tilnrium, $0; thorium,
$272 ; vanudium, $320; yttorium, $144,
and zinoouium, $250 an ounce.
“Thus we see that the commonly re
ceived opinion as to what are the most
precious metals is qnito eironeous. Ba
rium is nearly four times as valuable as
gold and, gallium more than 100 times
as costly, while many of the other met
als mentioned are twice and thrice as
valuable. Aluminium, which cost $8
and $0 a pound in 1890, is now pro
duced as cheaply as are iron, zinc, lead
and copper.”—Washington {star.

Anger and Weakness.
‘
The man who gives way to anger
in his own behalf is pretty sure to be
a weak character. He who is thrown
into an ungovernable passion, when
things'do not turn out as he hoped
they would, thereby shows that he is
not equal to the situation. His ex
hibition of anger is an unconscious
confession ot his personal weakness.
The strong brave man looks the dis
appointment in the face and is calm,
lie expects to surmount the obstacles
e fore him and to recover himself out
of his misfortune. But the man who
storms and raves, thereby makes it
evident that he lacks confidence in
himself, and that he can only best
work which the faculties might do,
vainly talk against the circumstances
which he feels unable to master.
A man in an angry passion rarely
accomplishes anything, except such
things as he is afterward sorry for.
Almost everywhere displayed anger is
a hindrance to success. It throws
the mind into confusion; it overthrows
men who are frequently raving at
events and berating their fellow-meu
and you select the essentially weak
men, who neither win great respect
nor carry great weight in the com
munity. “Anger resteth in the
bosomsbf fools.”
