A TRUTHFUL PSESFNTATION.
The oration of Maj. J. C. C. Black
©f Augusta, at the unveiling of the
Georgia monument at Chickamauga
last week, was a very able and a
truthful presentation ot the sentiment
and views held by the Southern peo
ple. The speech throughout is ex
ceedingly well put together and it is
creditable alike to Maj. Black and
the cause and people he was repre
senting. It ts well worth preservation
by the people of the south.
MERCER WON.
The debate between the Univer
sity of Georgia and Mercer Univer
sity was held at the Grand Opera in
Atlanta Monday evening. Mercer
was represented by Messrs. H. F.
Lawson, Mark Bolding, and W. F.
George. The University was repre
sented by Messrs. R. B. Jones, Carl
Sanders, and Robin Adair.
The question for debate was as
follows:
“Resolved, That a permanent pol
icy of territorial expansion would be
beneficial to the United States.”
The speeches were said to be very
good indeed, and the decision was
made in favor of Mercer University.
The Judges were Judge John L. Hop
kins, Hon. Dupont Guerry and Prof.
Derry. Mercer has won in every
contest so far, and the faculty and
Students are rejoicing greatly over
their victories.

A NOTABLE ADDRESS.
The Savannah Press, in speaking
of the speech of Maj. Black, at Chic
amauga, says:
The address of Hon. James C. C.
Slack at the unveiling of the Georgia
monument at Chicamauga was a no
ble effort. Mr. Black is an orator.
This is said of many men and is true
pf very few. Helms the dignity of
thought and expression which make
up an orator and his address at Chic
“amauga will rank with his notable
speech at the unveiling of the Ben
jamin H. Hill monument in Atlanta,
Which was a striking and eloquent
, effort-—one of the finest ever deliv-i
' ered in Georgia. Mr. Black spoke!
in Chicamauga as an American citi-1
zen and yet as a southerner who had
.gone through the stirring scenes
which marked the career of the south
ern soldier. That was a great oc
casion in Chicamauga. The state of
Georgia had erected an imposing
monument shaft in honor of her sons
who fought and fell and fought and
lived upon that hard fought field.
The year in which it has been un
veiled is a memorable one. There is
much to stir the patriotic heart.
Mr. Black s oration was broad and
noble. His tribute to Jefferson Da
vis was bold and just—a tribute which
‘•no propriety forbade; which truth
justified, and justice to her living and
dead demanded—that the character
oi Jefferson Davis is worthy of the
respect and admiration of all his
countrymen.”
“Let every state,” said Mr, Black,
, “whose sons participated in this bat
tle bring here its tribute. And then
I would erect another. It should be
the gift of all the states. Its foun
fcflatioYi should be broad and deep.
Its endurance should withstand the
wasting touch of time. In symmet
rical proportions and massive gran
deur it should rise column after col
umn. its lofty summit crowned with
the statues of two soldiers with
swoids sheathed and hands grasped,
and on it I would write this inscrip
tion:
“Here lie the victor and the van
quished. They lived in duty done;
they sleep in honored graves. In
memory of all her sons who fought
in the war between the states—those
who fought and won and those who
fought and failed—American patri
otism erects this monument to Amer
ican valor.’ ”

Fifth Baptist church by Rev. Virgil
Norcross, assisted by Rev. A. W.

From Prof. Kemp.
A letter from Prof. J. E. Kemp,
dated at Trinidad, Colorado, May 5,
1899, contains the following reference
to his present condition, which will
be read with pleasure by the people
of this section:
“While I am now completely well
and strong my doctor advises my re
maining on this plateau for some
years. I am completely well of
my consumption have no cough
and am stronger and more vig
orous than I have been for years.
This is the finest country in the world
in which to grow well but is “tetotal
ly” unfit lor anything else—no good
farming country, no factories, dull
business in every line—rich mineral
deposits, but one must be rich to, get
the minerals out. If I could live in
Georgia I wouldn’t stay here ten min
utes. Kindly remember me to old
friends. With best wishes.
