I HERE AND THF.RE,. i Mr. Judson Strickland, editor of the Thomaston Times, has been re commended by Congressman Bartlett for census supervisor for this district. The position is for two yeais and pays SI,OOO per year. Mr. Strickland went to Thomaston from Corcord, and is a gentleman fully competent to discharge with satisfaction all the duties of the office. Mr. R. H. Maddux left last Friday for Mississippi, where he went on an important business trip. Mr. Mad dux is the senior member of the firm of Maddux & Son, and they have been doing a nice business since opening in Barnesville. The Speigle place on Zebulon street is being improved. Anew roof is being put on, new rooms added and other important changes made. It is a valuable home place. The people are glad that Mr. Speigle, with his family, has moved back to Barnesville. Commencement is only a couple of weeks oft. The faculty and pupils of Gordon Institute are making every preparation for presenting excellent entertainments. It will be an inter esting commencement. Dr. J. B. Mathews from Zebulon, was in Barnesville Tuesday, greeting his numerous friends and looking after business matters. Dr. Mathews is not only a very efficient and ac commodating clerk of the superior court but he is a good man and a | very popular citizen. He is highly esteemed throughout the county and section. The burglars have been having a successful time about Lifsey Springs recently. They have made two suc cessful raids on the store of Mr. J. C. Lifsey. each time securing quite a lot of dry goods and groceries. The loss to Mr. Lifsey is estimated at two or three hundred dollars. The burglars went up through the floors, and made good their escape, leaving little or no clue as to their identity. Messrs. Jackson G. Smith & Sons’ vest pocket dictionary, like their ve hicles, is the best thing of the kind seen. It contains 30,000 words and is chock full of the most useful infor mation. This firm believes that knowledge of buggies gives power to decide in favor of Smith’s buggies, and hence they are anxious to furnish all information they can to the people who want vehicles. Mr. John Perry, a Barnesville boy, is making a live paper out of the Cordele Daily Hornet. The paper has a good patronage from the citi zens and it is an influence in the community. Perry does not hesitate to speak his mind on all questions that come up tor consideration. The people of Barnesville rejoice over the gradual improvement 01 Mr. Milton W. Smith, who has been in bad health for some time past. He is now able to ride out occasionally, and there is a decided improvement in his condition. Everybody hopes to see him soon permanently restored to health and strength. Coming to BarncMville: We are in receipt of a letter from Dr. J. M. Bosworth of Atlanta, who asks that it be announced in the col umns of The Gazette that he is improving fast from his recent sick ness, which prevented him from com ing to Barnesville to meet his en gagement with many on the 20th, of this month, and that he will be in Barnesville at a very early day, the time bei.ig announced in our col umns probably next issue. Dr. Bosworth was taken suddenly with congestion and came near dy ing three weeks ago. He is fast re covering. There Will be no Picnic, The Sunday School picnic an nounced for Friday at Wellmaker’s pond, has been indefinitely post poned and there will be no Sunday School picnic this year. The com mittees met Wednesday morning and after discussing the question they decided that it would be best not to have the picnic. I)r. Boggs to Preach. Dr. W. E. Boggs will preach sev eral sermons at the Presbyterian church, while in the city. He will preach there Friday night, Saturday morning and Sunday. Dr. Boggs is an able preacher and he will Le heard with interest by the people here. While in Barnesville he will be a guest of Dr. J. P. Thurman. Ordination Service. It is expected that an ordination service will be held at the Baptist church Sunday, at which time Dr. T J Watts will be ordained as a min ister of the gospel. These services are always full of interest. Dr. J. M. Brittain, the pastor, will be in charge of the service, assisted by visiting ministers. A Liberal Contribution. The meeting at the Methodist church came to a close last Thursday night. These services lasted for ten days and large congregations attend ed all the time. Dr. B. Carrodine did all the preaching and a great many professed the second blessing during the meeting. A voluntary donation at the close of the meeting made to Dr. Carro dine amounted to $165,00, showing that his services were highiy appre ciated. Exceedingly Busy. Messrs. Jackson G. Smith & Sons can hardly get men enough to turn out the buggies lor which they are eceiving orders daily. They have put on quite a number of new men and are now building and shipping at the rate of nearly two hundred bug gies per month. These orders come from every section of the south. Their business is very satisfactory. W. 11. Orenr Dies. Saturday morning Mr. W H. Orear died at his home necr Liberty Hill. He was a citizen well kno vn through out the community and was seventy .wo yeais old. For years he has suf fered with a cancer on his face, and it is said that one side of his face was almost eaten oil. He was a Christian gentleman and was held in high es teem by the people who knew him. His funeral was preached Sunday morniogby Rev. B. H Trammell of Barnesville. Mr. W. B. Smith had charge of the inter/ment. Mrs. Wagoner Dead. Mrs.W.l). Wagoner diedlastweek at the home of her husband, some miles out from Barnesville. She was a lady well known throughout the section. The funeral services were held at Fre donia church, and were conducted by Dr. J. M. Brittain. There are many to sympathize with the bereaved ones.
