Wliat This Section Needs.
The problem for Georgia and the
South to solve is the industrial prob
lem, says the Valdosta Times, and we
may add, the whole state of Georgia
has demonstrated the fact. Spme of
the enterprises have been tried and
proven a success. It only needs that
others be tried. “To save freights
and the profits which go to Northern
manufacturers and dealers by sending
our raw products a thousand miles
away from home to he manufactured
into merchandise and returned to us.
We need diversified manufactories to
furnish a market for diversified crops.
S Here are some enterprises that would
pay well here: More cotton fac-
tories, grist mills, tan yards, broom
factory, knitting mill, canning factory,
furniture factory, farm implements,
soap factory, etc. We should work
for enterprises of this sort until this
section of the state is thoroughly dot
ted with them. Foreign capital should
be encouraged to invest in them and
local capital should be encouraged to
lead the way in establishing them.
Diversity of industries means diversity
of crops, more money, more people
and greater prosperity.”

Ttifi Recent Rapid Growth and
Development ot Trusts
t
But few people appreciate the ex
tent to which prices and rates are
fixed by monopolies and combinations.
I Outside of grains, vegetables, and
fruits in manufactured forms and of
live-stock, it is difficult to purchase
any article upon which there is not an
artificial price, fixed either by the
producers of the article itself, by the
producers of the raw materials used
in making the article, by the dealers !
in it, or by agreements between any j
or all connected with the manufacture j
or sale of the article. Competition
inside the different industries exists
only to a limited extent, if at all.
Outside competition (of one product
with another; is becoming more and
more important, and hence we see
the great trusts in affiliated industres
getting together.
Besides the incorporated trusts,
which probably number more than
500 in the United States (and are
capitalized at $6,000,000,000 to SB,-
000,000.000, although their actual
capital is probably less than $3,000,-
000,000), there are perhaps 500 more
agreements and pools between com
peting manufacturers and transporters
which from the standpoint of the con
sumer, are as effective, injurious and
obnoxious to just the same extent as
are the great corporate trusts. These
agreements are often, if not usually,
kept secret, and the public has little
or no knowledge of them until some
competitor or former member announ
ces the fact or brings suit against the
trust. The steel rail, steel beam, nail,
chemical manufactures, anthracite
coal, and insurance trusts are or were
ot this class. None of their agree
ments had or could have any legal
recognition, and some of them were
not even written agreements. And
yet these have been among the most
effective trusts as respects raising or
sustaining prices.

Returning Good for Evil.
“I came upon a couple of boys j
fighting on the street the other day,” |
said the portly man, as he laughed at *
the recollection, according to the 1
Detroit Free Press. They were both
smeared over with eggs, and were
fighting like a couple of wildcats.
“Asa usual thing Ido not believe ;
in interfering with quarrels among
children, believing to let them fight
it out is better, and settle their own
difficulties in their own way.
“Eut they were fighting so fiercely,
were using such bad language that I
thought that it would be best to sep
ardte them.
“Getting hold of their collars, I
pulled them apart and demanded an
explanation.
“He threw a rotten egg at me!”
shouted the younger one of the two.
as he struggled to get at the other
boy again.
“This was undoubtedly a fact, as
the hoy's clothing was a strong testi
monial to the point in evidence.
“Tut. tut, said I ‘you should re
turn good for evil.’
“I did, he sobbed, the reaction
having set in. “The one that I
threw at him was a good one!’ ”

It is related of a Hiberian parade
in Chicopee that one of the officers
of the day telephoned an order to a
Holyoke stable for 15 white horses
for the use of marshals, aids, etc.
The liveryman filled the order, but it
somewhat taxed their resources to
find so many white horses. Judge of
their surprise a day before the pa
rade to receive an order for five more
white horses.
The liverymen deal quite exten
sively in horses and had but that day
received a consignment of young and
untried animals. Consequently they
were doubtful about sending any of
them to take part in the parade.
They sent word to Chicopee that it
would be impossible to fill the second
order, as they had -‘nothing but green
