BARNESVILLE, GA., THURSDAY, JULY 6, 1899.
THE CHAUTAUQUA.
The Chautauqua is all that the
most hopeful could dream for. It
has already been a great week for
Barnesville. Home folks and visi
tors have been charmed with the dif
ferent ieatures of the great occasion.
The Chautauqua opened Sunday
morning and it was a fine beginning.
A splendid audience greeted Dr. Lan
sing Burrows, of Augusta, as he
stood upon the platform as the first
attraction of the entire program.
He preached a magnificent serm*n
taking the character of Chiist as his
theme. At 8 o'clock his
lecture on "A Strange Story.” It is
a lecture that gets your attention at
once and holds you spell bound until
its close. From beginning to end
it is impressive and forceful and it is
certain to be productive of much
good where ever it is heard. Dr.
Burrows made a fine impression by
the lecture.
Monday morning brought upon
the platform one of the greatest Amer
ican lecturers, Rev. Thomas Dixon
Jr. His subject was ‘’Fools or the
School of Experience.” Mr. Dixon
was here last year and gave the
greatest satisfaction. He cameagain
this year and if possible increased his
reputation as a lecturer. He cannot
be described—he is simply great.
2000 people went to hear himTues-’
day evening on “The New Woman”
and not even a child went away dis
appointed in the efitort of the won
derful man.
THE MATCHLESS BRYAN.
Hon. William Jennings Bryan, the
great leader and orator, arrived
Monday evening at 10:15 o’clock and
was met by a great crowd at the de
pot. He was given a splendid re
ception. He was carried to the
home of Mayor and Mrs. Walter B.
Smith, where he spent the night and
remained Tuesday morning until 10:30
o’cloc’c. Here he had a good many
callers, to all of whom he was exceed
ingly pleasant. He is a most re
fined gentleman and all who came into
personal contact with him were
charmed with the man.
At 10:30 o’clock he went to the
anditorium, where he made a most
powerful speech on the pending
problems. He was eloquently
introduced by Hon. Clark Howell,
of the Atlanta Constitution, who said
that Mr. Bryan had already been
nominated for president by the Amer
ican people. We are not able to
present even a synopsis of the great
speech made by Mr. Bryan, but it
was greatly aypreciated by the au
dience of 3000 people who heard it
and it was cheered throughout with
great enthusiasm.
Monday evening a concert was
given by the Fifth Regiment Band,
always good and always popular, and
the Schubert Glee Club, which is
giving eminent satisfaction. It was
was largely attended and much en
joyed. Prof. Wedemeyer and his
magnificent band are even greater
favorites this year than they were
last year and this is the highest com
pliment that can be paid them.
Wednesday morning Dr. George
R. Wendling delivered his great lec
ture on Stonewall Jackson. Much
was expected of him—he met these
expectations. He is one of America’s
great orators and his visit to Barnes
ville has been a source of great pleas
ure to thousands. He lectures to
night (Thursday) on “The Man of
Gallilee.” It should be heard by
everybody.

TEACHERS INSTITUTE.
Several hundred teachers are in the
Inter-County Institute in session at
the auditorium. It is being conduct
ed by Dr. W. S. Payne, Prof. G. G.
Pond, and Prof. J. M. Pound. Many
county school commissioners and
members of the boards of education
are present and a fine work is being
done. Barnesville is glad that these
teachers are here and we hope that it
may be a pleasant and helpful occa
sion to them all.
Fifth Regiment Baud.
The Fifth Regiment band, thirty
strong, is in the city this week appear
ing daily at the chautauqua. This
band is one of the best in the South
and has made a famous reputation.
The concerts given by this body of
musicians are very much enjoyed by
the people who attend the exercises
at the auditorium and already the
members of the organization have
made many friends in the city. The
band will be here throughout the
week and it is well worth going to
the amditorium to hear the selections
rendered.
Prominent Visitors,
Among the prominent men present
Tuesda) were Senator A. O. Bacon,
Congressman C. L. Bartlett, Hon.
Clark Howell, of the Atlanta Consti
tution, Hon. VV. A. Dodson, president
of the state senate, Gen. Clemant A.
Evans, Mr. J. K. Old of the Atlanta
Constitution, Mr. R. L. McKenney
of the Macon Evening News, Mr.
Chas. Daniel ot the Atlanta Journal,
Mr. Ed Hook of the Augusta Chroni
cle, Dr. George R. Wendling, the
great lecturer, Dr. W. S. Payne of
the Peabody Normal Institute, Nash
ville, Tenn., and many others. These
gentlemen dined with Mr. Bryan at
the Matthews Hotel Tuesday after
noon and it proved to be a most de
lightful affair.

If she is Buffering from a torturing, drag

her sex, she has no right to answer “Yes”
until her health is restored. If she does,
she will be wretched and ill herself and her
home will he an unhappy one. Dr. Pierce’s
Favorite Prescription is a scientific remedy
that cures all weakness, disease, disorder
and derangement of the delicate and im
portant feminine organs It is not a “ cure
all,” but a medicine devised to correct thia
one class of disorders and no other. It
has accomplished its purpose in tens of
thousands of eases, as is shown by tens of
thousands of testimonials of the grateful
patients themselves. It imparts vigor and
virility to the entire womanly organism,
and is the best of all nerve tonics and re
storatives. It fils for wifehood and mother
hood. It transforms weak, nervous, de
apoudent invalids into healthy, happy
women.
“ I was so weak I could scarcely wslk about
the house," wtites Mrs. Mattie Scruggs, of
Allen's Creek, Amherst Cos., Va. “ Was reduced
to a mere skeleton I was never free from pain
in the back and head and could not sleep at
night I bought three bottles of Dr Pierce's
Favorite Prescription and ' Golden Medical Dis
covery * and two vials of ‘ Pleasant Pellets.' After
taking these six weeks f felt like a new person ;
slept well and gained in flesh. I am doing all
my own housework and we have nine in the
family.”
rA man or woman who neglects
constipation suffers from slow
poisoning. Dr. Pierce’s Pleasant
Pellets cure constipation. One
little “Pellet” is a gentle laxa
