The Gazette makes no apology
for this issue, except to state that the
editor has been too much engaged
with chautauqua aftairs to give his at
tention to the paper. He was wil
ling to contribute what he could to
the success of the chautauqua at the
expense of other matters.
A Story of 1892.
During the presidential campaign of
1892, says W. E. Curtis in the Chica
go Record, Senator Quay and Senator
Elkins, who were managing the Re
publican interests, and ex-Senator
Brice and Henry Wattcrson, who were
in charge of the Democratic head
quarters, used to live at the same ho
tel, and frequently dined together.
One evening, as they were sitting at
the same tabe, Mr. Brice looked over
to Senator Quay and asked:
“How are you folks off for mouey?
“We are very hard up,’ replied the
Republican chairman. “How are
you getting along?”
“Well," said Brice, “whenever we
want money I go down into my own
pocket for it. I have not been able
to get much anywhere else.”
“You are lucky to have a pocket
to go into,” said Senator Quay. “If
I had rponey of my own I would not
grumble.”
“But," said Brice, “I have to bor
jow it"
“Gentlemen," said Senator Elkins,
*‘l have a suggestion to make. Sup
pose we four go down town tomorrow
and borrow $1,000,000 upon our
joint indorsement, and divide it be
tween the two parties, and then let
whichever one wins pay the notes.’
IS IT MALARIA OR ALUM,
Popular Science Monthly.
Languor, loss of appetite, indiges
tion and often feverishness are the
common symptoms of a physiological
condition termed “malaria." All
these symptoms may be and frequent
ly are the use of alum baking powders
in food making. There is no ques
tion about the poisonious effect of
alum upon the system. It obstructs)
digestion, prostrates the nerves, coag
ulates and devitalizes the blood. All
this has been made clear, thanks to
physicians, boards of health and food
commissions. So “highly injurous to
the health of the community" does the
eminent head ot the University of
Pennsylvania, Dr. Baker, consider the
alum baking powders, that he says
“i'hcir sale should be prohibited by
law."
Under these circumstances it is
worth the while of every housewife to
employ the very little care that is
necessary to keep so dangerous an
element Irom the food of her family.
A pure cream of tartar baking pow
der, which is the only kind that
should be used, ought to cost about
forty-five to fifty cents a pound.
Theretore, if you are paying much
less, something is wrong; if you are
paying twenty live cents or less per
pound, the powder is certainly made
from alum.
Always bear these simple facts in
mind when purchasing baking powder.
Miss Prism: Don't let your dog bite
me, little boy.
Boy: He won't bite, ma'am.
Miss Prism: But he is showing his
teeth.
Boy (with pride): Certainly he is,

he has you'd show 'em, too. —Chicago

fl Solitary Way
PROV. XIV, 10—1. COB. 11,-11.
There is a mystery in human breasts;
And tho’ wo be encircled by a host
Of those who love us well and are be
loved.
To everyono of us from time to time
There comes a sense of utter loneliness.
Our dearest friend is ‘stranger’ to our
j'y,
And cannot realize our bitterness.
“There is not one who really under
stands, .
Not one to enter into all I feel'’:
Much is the cry of each of us in turn.
We wander in a ‘solitary way’;
No matter what nor where my lot may
be,
Each heart even mysterious even to
itself,
Must live its inner life in solitude.
JOB. VII. 17 matt. x. 87.
And would you know tho reason why
This is?
It is because the Lord desires our love.
In every heart he wishes to be first:
He therefore keeps the secret key to
himself,
To open all its chambers and to bless,
With perfect sympathy and holy peace
Each solitary soul which comes to him
So when we feel this loneliuess it is
The voice of Jesus saying: “Come to
me;”
And every time we are not understood,
Ills a call to us to come again;
For Christ alone can satisfy the soul,
And those who work with Him from
day to day
Can never have a “solitary way.”
ISIA. XLVIII. lfi, 22.-PS. xxxiv.
And when beneath some heavy cross
you faint
And say “I cannot bear this load alone”;
You say ibe truth. Christ made it pur
posely
So heavy that you must return to Him.-
The bitter grief which “no one under
stands”
Conveys a secret message from the
King,
Entreating you to come to Him again.
The man of sorrows understands it
well;
In all points tempted He can feel with
you.
You cannot come too often or too near;
The Son of God is infinite in grace,
His presence satisfies ti'e longing soul,
And those who walk with him from day
to day
Can never have a “solitary way.”

Debt Paying.
It is a man’s absolute duty to pay
his debts. The poet was not far
wrong when he said: “An honest man
is the noblest work of God." We are
living in an age in which dishonesty
seems to have multiplied a thousand
told. There are many like Judas,
ready to betray Christ for gain, and
like Benedict Arnold, ready to sell
country for an office. Politicians on
the market for • the highest bidder,
statesmen ready to barter their coun
cil, judges ready to accept a bribe,
jurymen ready to forswear themselves
and witnesses ready to commit perjury.
The virtues are too often marketable
commodities and sold to the highest
bidder. We need the doctrine of
rigid honesty proclaimed from every
pulpit in our land and practiced by
every member in our churches. Ihe
world needs to be told that no man
