OCT FOR THE SENATE.
Hon. Clark Howell, editor of the
Atlanta Constitution, will be a candi
date for the state senate from the
Thirty-fifth district, and his friends
throughout the state hope that he will
lie elected without opposition. He is
a getjtleman thoroughly qualified for
rendering the people of the state the
most valuable service. There are
few young men in this country more
fully in sympathy with the interests ot
the people, and as a result .Mr. How
ell has a wide .influence in state and
national affairs, and is in position to
be very useful to his immediate con
stitucnts and to the state at large.
TAX RATE REDUCED.
It will be good news to the tax
payers of this county to know that
the rate for state and county tax has
been reduced this year. The rate
last year for state was $6.21 per
SIOOO and for county about $7.29,
making for state and county about
s'3 s°-
The state tax for 1899 is $5.36 and
for the county $5, making $10.36 for
state and county, or more than $3 on
the SIOOO less than last year. This
is an important reduction and will be
appreciated by tax payers.
EDITORIAL NOTES.
The people of Barnesville attend
so strictly to their own business, wQrk
so untiringly and say so little a,bout
it, that even the citizens here hardly
realize to what commercial impor
tance Barnesville has attained. We
now ship goods to all parts of .Ameri
ca, and that too in large quantities.
One has only to notice'at the Central
freight depot, the number of buggies
and hearses, cases of underwear from
the several mills, cases of yarns from
thecotton factory, boxes of medicines,
etc, to get an idea of what the little j
city is shipping. It will astonish;
nearly every one. The fact is, the
height depot - is hardly large enough
to accommodate the goods skipped
daily from Barnesville, not to mention
the large quantity of goods received j
here.

The (iaJt I■vi IK. makes the prediction
that it will be only a short time until
the freight and passenger facilities at
Barnesville will have to be enlarged
to give proper accommodation to the
demands made by the railroad busi
ness. Mark the prediction!

The municipal authorities are to a
large extent responsible for the health
of a community. They can keep the
sanitary conditions right, which will
insure the good health of the citizens.
They can allow the sanitary conditions
to become bad, which will insure the
sickness ot the citizens. Therefore
one of the chief duties of municipal
authorities is to keep the sanitary
conditions right by requiring every
citizen to keep his premises clean and
free from those things which will pro
duce sickness. Let the municipal
authritres of Barnesville always re
member this.

We are gkul that Mayor Woodward
of Atlanta, prevented the investiga
tion of certain charges against him,
which was contemplated by the city
’ council, by making the promise that
he would promptly resign if he was
again guilty of getting drunk. The
council generously accepted the state
ment and dismissed the matter. The
course tor Mayor Woodward and all
others to pursue is to stay away from
cake walks and all other frolics where
beer or other such drinks flow freely.
All such frolics inevitably result in
somebody’s downfall or trouble. It
is the invariable rule, if persisted in.
A few years ago in a Middle Geor
gia town, a few citizens began to at
tend barbecues near by at
| stated times. For a while all went
i we'l and they were really enjoyable.
I Only good citizens participated in
them and no harm could possibly
come of them. Beer brought kindled
, amusements and time passed, but at
! the close of one of these weekly
frolics two citizens lay dead upon the
ground, murdered by each other's
hands, sorrow took possession of their
homes and the whole community was
in trouble. Men cannot play with a
rattlesnake without taking the risk of
being bitten and poisoned to death.
It is a cause of congratulation that
Barnesville has gotten the public
library in operation. A'ears ago Thf,
Gazette urged the -organization of
such an inst.aition. It is certain to
be productive of much good. When
good seed are sown they bring forth
good fruit. Now, everybody should
give :t cordial encouragement and
support.
This is a glorious country. Its
| possibilities are without limit. From
the humblest homes in the land may
come men who will attain to the po
sitions of highest honor and responsi
bility. From the poorest hovels may
come men who will accumulate count
less wealth. When one looks upon
one of the barefooted boys who now
frolics upon the streets of Bamesville,
he may see such possibilities. The
Gazette is reminded of these things
by two little boys, familiar to nearly
all our citizens. These boys are Hoyt
and Henry Williams. The former
works at the Central depot and the
latter is messenger boy for the West
ern Union Telegraph Cos. They are
at the very bottom now, but both are
industrious anil honest and if they are
faithful to the end, it is not an exag
geration to say that one of them may
be the president of a great railway
system, while the other may control
a great telegraph company. These
are possibilities, and if they do ac
complish such results it will simply be
a Case of “history repeating itself."

Co-operation is the unwritten law j
of mankind, and of right it ought to
be. Citizens of a community having
common interests are of necessity
compelled to co operate one with the
other. No one man can prosper of
and within himself, but his welfare is
controlled largely from without.
“Patronize home enterprises" is a
much worn sentence but it is a princi
ple which The Gazette has always
advocated and one which it will con
tinue to advocate. Other things
being equal, local citizens should al
ways buy from and deal with local
business men. In this way everybody
will help everybody prosper. In pol
itics this plan is called “the spoils of
office" and it is largely right. Those
who do most to advance the welfare
of a community deserve most from
the individuals who make up the
! community. None can deny the cor
rectness of this position. I.et every
, citizen govern his conduct accordingly.

In a charge to the grand jury of
He Kalb county recently. Judge John
S. Candler referred to .-concealed
weapons in the following manner:
‘T desire to call your attention to
the carrying of concealed weajK>ns
not only in this county, but all over
the country. This is one of the mat
ters that you may have to deal with
and you should be aggressive in
bringing all guilty of the offense to
trial. Only cowards carry concealed
weapons, and the men who make a
habit of carrying pistols have not the
courage to use them. They may

shoot another in the back and from
ambush, but they rarely ever fight to
a man's face and in the light."’
There is another feature of carrying
pistols which deserves serious atten
tion. A man who carries a pistol is
already a murderer at heart. When
he gets his consent to hide a pistol
on "his person, he has already consent
ed to commit murder, to take human
life. The pistol is made, sold and
carried for no other purpose but to
take human life, and every person
who carries a pistol does so because
deep down in his heart he has gotten
his consent, unthoughtedly and un
consciously it may be, to kill a human
being. There may be exceptional
circumstances sometimes which would
seem to more or less justify a man in
carrying a pistol, but even then in its
last analysis, this only places condi
tions upon the consent, and the prop
osition here laid down is the unalter
able fact that every person who carries
a pistol has consented to kill some
human being. It is a fearful truth!
