FARM AGENT URGES
VEGETABLES STORAGE
P TO CONSERVE FOOD
Looking toward conservation of our
food supply in connection with the
food for freedom program. County
Agent Bill Brigham this week remind
ed farmers that it would be well at ’
this time to consider the storing of
surplus vegetable crops on the farm.
“Simple and inexpensive storage i
methods may be used for various
crops that are mature and also those
that are growing at the present time," ;
Mr. Brigham said. “Many crops may
be stored that will come in very good
later in the winter months for home
use and possible for market. Every
fall, quantities of crops are wasted •
due to the lack of proper storage.” i
The Extension agent suggested
many of the following crops that may
be stored for winter use: beets, cab
bage, carrots, celery, lettuce, onions, |
parsley, Irish potatoes, sweet pota- (
toes, rutabaga, winter squash, toma- ‘
toes, and turnips.
He also suggested certain suitablej
storage spaces for these crops, among j
which were basements, cellars, pits, j
caves, banks, mounds, and trenches, j
He also pointed out that some crops i
require moist, cool conditions for the
best storage, while others need rather

“Such crops as carrots, celery, and
lettuce may be stored in trenches
where the drainage is good, with
some protective cover from severe
cold,” he said. “Other crops such as
onions, sweet potatoes, and winter
squash should have dry, ventilated

F. F. A. Class Goes
On Overnight Trip
On October 3 the ninth grade F. F.
A. Class went on an overnight camp
ing and hunting trip. On October 10
the entire chapter went on another
trip on the Chattahoochee River. Dur
ing the trip some of the boys went to
see the dredge, which is dredging
gravel from the river bed. Open fire
meals were prepared. According to
John Patterson’s tale he saw a turkey
go into a hollow log. John lite up his
corn eob pipe and smoked him out,
then killed him with his sling shot.
Believe it or not. Wilbur Thurman
had an old shotgun that looked like it
was used in the Boer War. He would
just hollow '’Squirrel" and pull the
trigger and down came the squirrel.

FSA Proves Value
Os Food For
Defense Program
Proof of the value of the Food for
Defense program started last May by
the Farm Security Administration is
in plain sight, said Hugh E. Gleaton,
FSA supervisor for Seminole County,
today. The low-income farmer who
took part in the program is beginning
,to see prospects of real and continu
ing profit in cash, as well as in better
balance of his operations.
With the flocks of Food for Defense
chickens culled out by sale of fryers
and broilers, there remains from the
baby chicks bought in May a perma
nent investment of pullets that have
begun prorfupjng eggs in some fgses
or that will soon begin;

In the four states of the Southeast
which comprise Region V of FSA
I (Alabama, Florida, Georgia and South
|Carolina), nearly two million of these
i pullets are expected to produce 16
million dozen eggs in the next year to
supply the nation’s need of this valu
able food commodity—a need for eggs
for its own tables, for the market,
and for shipment to friends of de
mocracy overseas.
I In this county, an estimated 975
i added hens would produce 9,750 eggs,
I Mr. Gleaton said.
And this is only one part of the
' story, said the FSA supervisor. From
■'every part of the region reports are
(coming of new milk that have been es
tablished, as the 20,000 new milk
■ cows added to the stock of the 52,649
■ participants in the campaign, begin
■producing. This should mean, he said,
1 35 million more pounds of milk in the
region. In this county, 12 cows added,
i with the prospect of 2500 pounds more
i of milk to enrich diets of the small
farmers and to add to the supply a
vailable for the market, bringing
more cash income.
The first step in production and
cash returns from the Food for De
, sense campaign was the sale of fryers
and broilers. On this operation, the
families more than broke even in most
i rases, counting the investment of
■ chicks, feed and equipment, Now they
Will begin to take in more profit.
Yet to come is the next stop of (
(more food production for the enlarged
Farm Defense program Just announc
ed by the Department of Agriculture.
Farm Security families in this county,
encouraged to grow more feed for
i their poultry and stock, are in better
■shape than ever to cash in on the
I new type of farming that they have
I learned is to pay big dividends both
in money and better living.
