NEW UTILITY EXTENSIONS HIT
BY MATERIAL SHORTAGES
In a mandate issued by Donald Nel
son. Director of Priorities of the Of
fice of Production Management, elec
tric, gas and water utilities. muni
cipally and privately owned. have
been ordered to desist in the construc
tion of new electric lines, gas feeders
and water mains except to connect
customers immdiately on the route of
existing installations. New business
activity and the encouragement of
sales of major gax end electric ap
pliances must be eliminate*!.
The transition from contract awant
ing and plant construction and plan
ning to actual high speed production
has brought about critiwii shortages
of defense ji.uteri ds which as t>e;,’?g
severely fc’.t by the electric, gas and
water utilities. Lack of such materials
as copper, aluminum, steel and zinc
has produced in turn an acute short
age of gat and water pipes, wire, pole
hardware, transformers, pumps,
switch gear and other electric. gas
and water equipment.
While Mr. Nelson has assured elec
tric utilities of a supply of materials
needed for repair, maintenance and
operation of “existing services’’ by
the granting of a blanket priority
number, no materials are hereafter
available for new construction under
his order.
The language of the order is very
explicit as follows, “the terms Opera
ting Supplies, Maintenance and Re
pair do not include material for
1. the improvement of a Producer s
property or equipment through the
replacement of Material which is
still usable in the existing insulk--
iion with Material of a better kind,
quality or design;
2. addition to, or expansion of, such
property or equipment, other than
the connection of new consumers to
the general lowest pressure or low
est potential system of the Pro
ducer, and minor improvements
needed for relief from serious over
load and other minor capital addi
tions ;
3. expansion of the service area of
the Producer.”
on this recent develop
ment. J, F. Bailey, President of Geor
gia Power and Light Company, said,
“The result of this situation will be
the immediate cessation of all new
line construction and all but the most
necessary rehabilitation and main
tenance work. New customers who are
within two or three hundred feet of
existing electric lines may be given
service, but extensions into thinly pop
ulated rural areas or new ‘service
areas’ in towns are prohibited under
this order.” Mr. Bailey continued.
“Business cannot be as usual, and full
co-operation of the public, real estate
men, contractors and municipal offi
cials is asked in meeting these pro
blems caused by drastic shortages of
defense materials. Customers of Geor
gia Power and Light Company plan
ning any changes in their electric
service requirements should first con
tact the nearest Georgia Power and
Light Company office and each indi
vidual problem will be given every
possible consideration. We trust and
expect that all gas and water com
panies. both municipal and private,
will join with us in a united effort to
iick Hitler by foregoing our normal
material supplies that they may be
used to build the tanks, ships, airplan
es and guns that will assure his de
feat. The government has ordered us
to curtail at every point. We can do
no less.”
NITROGEN SHORTAGE
MAKES LEGUME SEED
SUPPLY IMPORTANT
A possible nitrogen shortage mak
es a legume seed supply very impor
tant in the national defense program,
E. D. Alexander, agronomist of the
Agricultural Extension Service, said
this week.
“It may be a little late to put out a
last call for seed saving,” Alexander
declared, “but it is never too late to
begin on a project that extends
i throughout the year as does seed sav-
■ ing and preservation.”
I The Extension agronomist suggest-
• ed that farmers save the seed of cow
-1 peas, soybeans, velvet beans and les-
’ pedeza as well as those of cotton.
| corn, millet ahd pasture grass.
“Summer legume crop seed were
’ scarce last spring,” Alexander said,
i “and there is a possibility that they
. will be scarce in 1942.”
•i Alexander declared that in begin
ning on a seed program the first thing
t to do is to plant seed of the best a
dapted, high-yielding varieties and
i then keep them pure. He added that
; the big job now is for farmers to save
i summer legume seed and plant good
seed for spring seed saving.
