i BEER -CLEAN UP’ HEAD
ASKS CARE IN ISSUING
1942 RETAIL LICENSES
Judge John S. Wood, in Letter to
Cities and Counties, Urges That
Permits Be Denied Law-Breakers
ATLANTA, December B—Local au
! thorities throughout Georgia today
were urged by Judge John S. Wood,
state director of the Brewers and
Beer Distributors Committee of Geor
gia, to exercise care in the granting
of retail beer licenses for 1942 and to
withhold them from law-breakers.
In letters to the Board of County
| Commissioners of Seminole county, as
well as to the licensing authorities of
all other counties in Georgia and to
the mayors and councilmen of a ma
jority of the incorporated towns in the
j state, Judge Wood asks that only re
| spectable, law-abiding citizens be giv
en the privilege of selling malt bev
erages during tthc coming year.
“Our appeal applies not only to re
tailers who held licenses during 1941,”
said Judge Wood, “but to new appli
cants for 1942 permits. The vast ma
jority of beer dealers in Georgia are
> reputable businessmen, and, naturally,
, their licenses will be renewed ... it
. is the aim of our committee’s 'clean
up or close up’ campaign to have all
I'etailers of beer placed in that cate
gory.”
In offering local communities his
? I full cooperation in maintaining beer
'I retailing on a high plane, Judge Wood
i pointed out that the committee makes
1 no attempt to supplant the regularly
constituted authorities, “but, as an
: additional ‘shoulder to the wheel’ of
i law enforcement, supplements their
’ work and offers them its aid when
! ever the need arises”.
Nearing the end of the second year
;| of the self-regulation activity, the
H Brewers and Beer Distributors Coni-
> | mittee has extended its x&rk into all
i j sections of the state, Judge Wood re
;! ported.
