Use Old Farm
Machinery
Says Gleaton
The war and its necessities have
placed on farmers large and small the
obligation of conserving and putting
to best use every piepe pf farm ma
chinery, it was pointed out today by
Hugh E. Gleaton, supervisor of the;
Farm Security Administration pro
gram in Seminole and Miller Counties.
Accordingly, the FSA has thrown
its efforts into the campaign, in
which all agencies of the United Stat-'
es Department of Agriculture and the
USDA Defense Boards are joined, to
help overcome the impending short-,
age of new farm machinery,
“There is a lot of farm machinery,'
both whole and in parts, that may be;
redeemed for use," said Mr. Gleaton. ■
“We are asking all FSA borrower'
families to help collect unused mach- ;
inery, to collect parts of old machin-.
ery which may still be used, and to i
spread the use of machinery under a J
can of sharing and of joint owner-!
ship.”
“Most farm machinery doesn’t wear ;
jut so much as it rusts out, In the!
present national emergency, the re- j
demption and restoration of old mach-!
inery becomes a patriotic duty."
“Farmers will have to depend more
than ever on existing machinery re
gardless of its condition, because the
manufacture of new machinery and
equipment will be sharply curtained
in 1942 due to the defense demands
on supplies of steel, copper and other
metals. Farm machinery parts are go-1
ing to be both scatte and expensive..
We are urging all Farm Security fa
milies to oil and grease their mach
inery' and to wrap all moving parts
now. Tools are being checked over for
repair or replacement and then stored
in sheds or protected from the weath
er in some other way.”
We also are advising them to strip.
from all implements all bolts, gears,-
or other parts needed to repair newer I
machinery."
Mr. Gleaton pointed out that there
is an opportunity for profitable em
ployment for both individual farmers
and groups of farmers in assembling
painting and restoring machines which
hftve rusted from disuse and which,
under normgl conditions, might have
been discarded for scrap heaps.
