SHS Indians Win Tourney
Opener From Pelham 49-38
Frank Barbaree
Killed On Guam
Staff Sgt. Frank Barbaree,
formerly of Donalsonville, was
killed in an airplane accident on the
island of Guam on February 15th.
Sgt. Barbaree married a D’ville
girl, the former Bernice Bush, and
was a resident here at the time of
his first entry in the service. Fol
lowing his discharge, he re-enlisted
in the Air Force and was sent to
Guam, where he was killed.
Details of the accident are not
known here. The mishap occurred
on February 15th and Frank died
of a skull fracture, his death com
ing the following day, February
16th.
The deceased was the son of Mr.
and Mrs. H. F. Barbaree, present
ly of Sarasota, Fla., and the news
of his untimely death comes as a
shock to their many friends they
made while here.
The remains are being sent to
Sarasota, Fla. for burial.
A. C. Boys, Girls
Whip Cairo In
Twin Bill Here
Charles Willis sank 28 points to
lead the floor for the night and the
Boys A. C. for the seasori Monday
night, as D’ville beat Cairo in a
twin bill at the local gymnasium.
The Girls won the opener from the
Cairoites, 27 to 11 and the boys
won 66 to 34.
Martha Ann Hastey paced the
winning D’ville girls with 13 points.
Rilla Mae Martin added 6, Gibson
5, and Vick 3. For the losing visi
tors, Long was high with 6, Brock
making the other five markers.
Taking off to an early lead, the
Girls ran up a 16-4 arg in at half
time, although neither team tallied
in the second quarter. Others play
ing for D’ville but failing to score
were: Miller, Goodwin, Schwark,
Thomas, Guterman, Cannington,
Tabor, Hudson and Scott. A tight
D’ville defense held the visitors
throughout the game, their six
points coming two in the first quar
ter and one in the final.
The boys half of the night’s en
tertainment was a matter of play
ing out the quarters. The locals
pulled away to a commanding and
comfortable lead well before the
first half ended, and from the half
added more in the last semi to win,
66-34.
Charles Willis was the scoring
star of the night. Taking his points
mainly from crip shots and floor
long passes, Willis set a season’s
record with his 28 points. Marlin
Cannington came in second with 16.
Bowen of Cairo ran third with 12,

Seminole’s Indians won the open
ing round of the District 2 Class
“B” tournament in Camilla Wed
nesday, beating Pelham 49-38.
Marvin Wiley was the offensive
star of the night, hi.ting the bucket
with the hole in it for 20 points.
Pelham made it hot for the win
ners in the latter half. The Indians
held a lead of 29-18 at half time,
The Donalsonville A. C. Boys
will play a strong team from
Colquitt tonight at the high
school gymnasium here. The
game will start at 8:00 o’clock.
Colquitt is recognized as
one of the strongest A. C.
clubs in Southwest Georgia
and has won 20 games while
losing but 4. One of the losses
was to Hopeful by a seven
point margin. Among victims
of the Miller Countians are
Tallahassee and Albany.
Next Thursday night, both
boys and girl’s teams will play
in Cairo. Thursday night the
boys were playing in Harmon,
Alabama.
but the boys on the short end
caught fire and caught the Indians,
tieing the count at 33-33 for every
body at the end of the third period.
But turn-about continued and the
Indians ended with a lead of 11
poin:s. Others scoring for, the In
dians were: Freddie Battles 11;
Mack Curtiss Sporman 9; Merrian
King 6; and Tommy Faircloth 3.
A Proclamation
WHEREAS, our youth attending
schools throughout the State of
Georgia are in constant danger of
being killed or permanently injur
ed in attending schools by reason
of .traffic accidents, both on our
public highways and city streets,
and
WHEREAS, the Georgia Veter
ans of Foreign Wars have under
taken to raise money to construct
a summer camp on the shores of
Lake Blackshear in the Veterans’
State Memorial Park, whereby boys
and girls throughout our great
State will be properly trained in
school safety patrol work during
each summer, in order that they
may return to their respective
communities as School Patrol to
assist in safeguarding the lives and
limbs of their fellow students.
NOW. THEREFORE, I, E. P.

Donalsonville, Georgia, do proclaim
the week of February 27th, 1950, as
“SCHOOL BOY FUND PATROL
WEEK”
in the City of Donalsonville and
call upon the people of our City to

Dunn Theatre To
Show “Stromboli”
“Stromlboli,” the most “cussed”
and discussed motion picture in the
world today, is coming to the
Dunn Theatre here next Thursday
and Friday or a two-day engage
ment.
Starring Ingrid Bergman, whose
name has been on lips of hundreds
of millions of people since the birth
of her baby, the picture is rated by
some as very good, some as poor
and some as “lousy.”
This is the first showing of the
picture in South Georgia and fol
lows behind the large cities in the
nation which showed the picture for
the first time two weeks ago. Some
cities have banned the picture be
cause of its background.
Whether its good, bad or what,
see it for yourself.
Mrs. Ethel Hill is recuperating
at a local hospital, following a seri
ous operation recently.
Happy Wilson To
Appear In Person
At People Theatre
The management of the Peoples
Theatre has announced that Happy
Wilson and his Green River Boys
will appear in person on the stage
on Saturday, February 25th. The
troupe will give performances with
each show and at the late show.
On the screen is Allan “Rocky”
Lane in “Oregon Trail.”
Happy Wilson is a famous re
cording artist for Decca records.
He has appeared in several movies
starring Tex Ritter and with the
Three Mesquiteers. The show will
feature music and mirth for all
ages.

distinction of Cincinnati Conserva
tory of 'Music and a pupil of M.
Thalberg.
Miss Pierce will accompany Prof.
Iler on the piano. She has made
several concert tours with him in
the past.

Presbyterians To
Dedicate Church
There will be an all day dedica
tion service held at the Rocky Ridge
Presbyterian Church Sunday, Feb.
26th. Services will be held at 11:30
A. M., Dinner on the ground at 1:00
P, M., Dedication Service at 2:30
P. M., and Evening Services at
8:00 P. M.
This church was begun March
13, 1949 with an open air meeting
held under two large oak trees in
Mr. Buck Jenkin’s yard. The meet
ings were moved to a little three
room house located on Mr. Tom
Easom’s land where it soon out
grew its space. A tent was erected
beside the house to take care of the
people and used for afternoon wor
ship services. The people began to
make plans to build a church in
that community and the plans have
developed in the new little white
building with two Sunday School
rooms.
The Church is equipped with gas
heat, pews and chairs, and a piano.
The people of that community are
to be commended for their labors
and love for the Lord in making
this House of Worship possible for
that community.
We are grateful to everyone who
has given toward the erection of
this Church. 'Our many friends have
helped in various ways and we do
appreciate it very much.
Beginning with the service Sun
day night at 8:00 P. M., the pas
tor, Rev. J. Don Skinner, will hold
a revival meeting ending Friday
night, March 3rd. The public is
invited to attend all the services.
Sunday School is held every Sun
day afternoon at 3:00 P. M. and
preaching services every 2nd and
4th. Sunday afternoon at 3:45 P.
M. There is a Bible Class held every
Thursday night at 8:00 P. M. The
Women of the Church meet every
Monday afternoon for a Bible Stu
