My 4-H Public
Speaking Project
(By Mary Ollie Ward)
The first year I took public
speaking as a (project was 1949.
Later I became more interested
-and began taking expression,
'which I took for one year.
In the summer of 1949 I went
to the District 4-H Achievement
Meet in Amerrcus for the first
time. At this meeting all 4-H mem
bers try to develope their motto,
“To Make the Best Better,” in
each of the contests. I entered in
Junior Public Speaking and won a
blue award. Before going to this
-meeting I made my speech at the
Lions Club, Veterans Club, County
4-H meetings and other social
meetings.
In 1950 I entered public speak
ing again. Only this year it was a
great deal different. I had to com
pete in the county before going to
the District. My competitor was
Jane Spooner, a senior in high
school. The contest was won by
me, and I was really proiH of my
self. Then in the summer I went
to the District Meet once again.
This time I was in the Senior pub
lic speaking division. Before going
I made my speech to the Lions
Club, Veterans Club, high school,
club meetings, county camp and at
several social gatherings. I had
much more experience this year
and was better equipped with in
formation about my 4-H work. I
won a white award that year. I
know from experience that public
speaking benefits every boy and
girl. A few of the ways public
speaking has helped me are: It
has helped to speak with more in
terest and enthusiasm because of
the increase in my vocabulary; it
has helped me in courses that re
quire oral work; it has helped in
my pronounciation of words; It
has helped me to influence people

more about my club work, especi
ally the children who do not be
long to 4-H club. I think public
speaking is one of the most im
portant projects in 4-H club.
In December the 4-H club had a
special program at Seminole High
School where Mr. Ragan, our
county agent, awarded members
many different awards. I was
awarded a public speaking medal.
Everyone was very proud of their
medals.
This year I plan to attend the
District meet again and I am en
tering in the Home Beautification
contest. I hope to come back with
the top score.
I am planning to use my 4-H
motto and pledge this year, and
make this the best of my five years
of 4-H club work.
Our pledge:
“I pledge my head to clearer
thinking; My Heart to greater
loyalty; My Hands to larger ser
vice; and My Health to better liv
ing, for my club, community and
country.”
Our Motto:
“To Make the Best Better.”
My 4-H Beef Calf
(Continued From Front Page)
I get business training form keep
ng records of all my expenses and
income. I am also learning to pro
perly care for, feed my calf, and
to appreciate good beef type calves
when I see them.
I began feeding my steer last
year on October 10th. I used three
parts crushed hay and one part
crushed corn until December 20.
Then I increased the corn until I
was feeding him 50 per cent corn
and 50 per cent hay. After that I
began feeding him one pound of
cotton seed meal a day. I increased
my corn and meal until by January
20th, I was feeding him three
pounds of meal a day, and about
18 pounds of crushed corn. I also
him a small amount of hay
daily. I continued feeding him this
amount until the last 30 days. I
began giving him one pound of
Omelene a day with a small in
crease daily until I was feeding
him four pounds of Omelene a day
along with his corn and meal at
time of sale. I also kept a mineral,
block and plenty of fresh water
before him daily.
I also bought my calf that I am
now feeding from Mr. H. O. Cum
mings, October 15, 1950. He weigh
ed 755 pounds. I am trying to feed
him as near in the same order, as
1 did last year, only I began feed
ing cottonseed meal at an earlier
date. He has gained an average of
2 and one-third pounds a day. I
have learned to groom and lead
