With Potatoes?
(By Rex Trawick, County 4-H
Sweet Potato Champion)
'Sweet potatoes are a good crop,
aftd I cannot think of any other
"crop planted on an equal number
of acres that would equal the
yield and profit that I received
from bunch Porto Rico potatoes.
’Other than considering the profit
from the standpoint of dollars and
cents, potatoes are an excellent
food and a good feed for livestock.
If fed along with corn it furnishes
a balanced ration for hogs.
Thanks to our 4-H clu'b advisor!
It was through his help that I
worked into this project and have
been successful with two crops.
I began with a thirty foot hot
•bed, using certified bunch Porto
Rico seed potatoes which were fur
nished by the extension service.
These were .disease free, high
quality seed potatoes. However, it
Was necessary to dip them in a
solution of Semesan Bel.
Last year I increased from one
-30 foot bed to one 30 foot and
one 60 foot bed and bedded approx
imately 45 bushels of certified
seed potatoes which I produced. I
set five acres, three from slips and
two from vine cuttings.
■An electric hot bed is very effi
cient and dependable. Eighty to
eighty-five degrees is the desirable
temperature. However, after slips
appear a slight venilation is nec
essary.
‘Fertilizer is important in produc
ing slips. I watered the potatoes
generously when I first bedded
tftiem. Then, I made sure that the
.'soil was kept moist at all times.

Ware was settled about 1818, but real growth began in
1825 with the parceling of land-lots of 212.5 acres. Gov
ernor Troup proclaimed: "Men and the soil constitute
the strength and wealth of the nations, and the faster you
plant men, the faster you can draw on both.” Naval
stores, furs and alligator hides, tobacco, pecans, and tup
elo honey are among the products that make this a thriv
ing commercial center.
The United States Brewers Foundation operates in this
and other Georgia counties to maintain proper conditions
wherever beer and ale are sold. Special attention is given
all areas near camps of the Armed Forces and with the
expansion of service personnel the industry’s self-regula
tion activities in these areas have been increased. Military
officials on the highest level have commended the Founda
tion for its successful cooperation.

Before transplanting the slips to
the field, I turned off the heat and
gradually increased the ventilation.
I began pulling the first slips in
about 25 days. Other than the
amount I used, I filled a number
of orders for other people.
Slips from the hot beds, plus
sales 'from three acres of pota
toes, amounted to $475.00. I also
fed out 35 head of hogs.
'My experience in this work has
it aught me. to keep records, bed
and produce my own plants, using
only certified seed grown from
vine cuttings, medium to small
in size, discarding all potatoes
that are off type in color and
shape or with surface markings
that resemble rot. Demonstrating
my hotbed to people has meant
much to me. The most important
thing I have learned is that good
potatoes growing does not just
happen.
I have given several local dem
onstrations, showing the use and
advantages of a hotbed. Also, I
may add, I won second place and
received a medal at our District
meeting last year.
In conclusion may I say, Thanks,
again for our 4-H club and every
thing it stands for. Club work has
given me confidence in myself and
“I shall strive ever to make the
best better.”

My 4-H Forestry
Project
(By Bobby Hornsby, President,
County 4-H Council)
I have planted six acres of pine
trees by myself and helped to
plant 20 acres.
The year 1948 is when I got
interested in forestry work. 1949
I went to the forestry camp located
near Waycross. We had fun at
this camp as well as hard work.
In July 1949 six others and my
self went to Americus to* give
demonstrations. My demonstration
was on forestry. I did not win
first place, but I did win an award
of excellence. In July 1950 I gave
the same demonstration and won
second place. I am. going to give
the demonstration again this
year.
I am learning lots from planting
trees. I have learned that we do
need a tree planting program in

DONALSONVILLE (GA.) NEWS FRIDAY, MARCH 9, 1951
Seminole county. Some people will
say “what’s the use of planting
trees, you can’t make any money
on them, that it will take too lsng
for them to grow and that they
would probably be dead when the
trees get ready to cut and be sold.”
This it not true. We planted some
10 years ago, they are big enough
for pulp wood now and in 10 years
more they' will be big enough for
lumber. If you should die after you
had planted the trees you would
probably have some children who
would realize something out of
them. I have also learned that it
doe 3 not pay to plant trees on
good land. Plant them on poor land
or land you know you won’t be
needing. You can make more on
your best land by row cropping.
The land where I planted mine
was the poorest land we had. The
land would grow good pasture, but
you can keep the pasture and the
trees on the same land.
I believe that planting pine
trees will be a good cash crop in
the future. I intend to keep on
planting until the poorest land
gives out.
I have learned that the forest
will not grow good and everything
dies out if you burn them every
year or so. Fire breaks can be
used to a great advantage in the
forest.
