The 4-H Club
Poultry Chain
(By Yvonne Clarke, Secretary,
County Council)
In these articles we 4-H’ers are
trying to tell you, the people, more
aibout our 4-H club work. There
are many phases of club work and
the one which I will discuss is the
Seminole County Poultry Chain.
In this article I shall try to tell
you of the reasons, advantages and
importance of this poultry chain
and how it has helped me.
This program is sponsored by
Sears, Roebuck and Company, and
the chickens are distributed to the
4-H’ers by the Georgia Extension
Service. Ten members of the 4-H
cluib are selected and each is given
one hundred chicks to care for and
raise. There are one hundred and
eighty-seven hatcheries in the
state of Georgia and poultry chains
are now located in one hundred
and ten Georgia counties.
I was a member of the poultry
chain in 1950. I learned to care for
poultry in the most successful and
scientific manner, to produce eggs
at a profit, and to keep records and
manage business. One important
fact that heightens interest in this
program is the fact that the chick
ens are entirely your own and
that you must assume the respon
sibility that rests upon you. Nat
urally you are more interested in
raising and caring for your own
things than you would be in caring
for someone else’s.
One of the highlights of this
program is the poultry show in
the fall. At this show each owner
exhibits six pullets and money
prizes are awarded by Sears, Roe
buck and Company. Persons who
win blue ribbons receive ten dol
lar! and those winning red ribbons
receive seven dollars and a half.

awards are: Ina Trawick, Marilyn
Avirett, Yvonne Clarke, Martha
Brapkin, Jack McCrackin and Fate
Bush. Dorothy Harrell, Raydell
Ingram, Royce Hayes and Benny
McDonald won red awards.
I won first place in the county
at this show and Fate Bush won
second place. We each then sent
two pullets to the State Fair in
Macon to compete in the state
contest. I won a bjjue award and
five dollars prize money in this
contest.
Members of the poultry chain
Who did outstanding work were
given a small silver pin when their
awards were presented.
Each member pays for his chick
ens at the end of the year and
this money is used to buy one hun
dred more chicks for another club
member next year. This allows
the program to expand and the
object of this movement is to
distribute purebred, high egg pro
ducing chickens throughout the
county.
The chicks are usually received
in January or February and the
members are urged to have a
clean warm brooder ready for the
chickens. The members of the
poultry chain from several coun
ties attend a one day poultry
school. H. W. Bennett, Extension
poultryman, conducts the school
and gives a clear outline of the
project to be followed by the mem
bers.
iSeminole county members of the
chain for 1951 are: Garner Tra
wick, Lowell Yearta, Mary Lane,
M. T. Simmons, Bobby Horne, June
Faircloth, Alex Bush, Bruce Bar
ber, Hazel Bunke, Henry White,
Bobby Jean Culpepper, Hayward
Faircloth and Mary Grace Zorn.
And to you new members I
would like to say, “There’s a lot
of hard work in this project, but
it is one of the most worthwhile
and helpful projects in 4-H work.
I am sure each of you is equal to
the task and will produce some
fine records this year.”
