DONALSONVILLE (GA.) NEWS FRIDAY, MARCH IG. 19’1
‘Mountain’ Called ‘Great’
(By SUSANNAH S. SMITH)
Those who were privileged to
see the advance showing of “I’d
Climb the Highest Mountain,” on
Monday morning of this week, de
clared that this production is more
than a moving picture, it is a
way of life and will become an
institution.
Now Georgia has given to the
world two great masterpieces.
While they have become a part of
the very soul of Georgia, they
also belong to the world.
“I’d Climb the Highest Moun
tain” perhaps is not as magnifi
cient a picture as ’’Gone With The

Wind,” and the staging was not as
difficult, yet the latter production,
which was produced in the very
heart of the Georgia mountains,
will no doubt take its place as
one of Georgia’s most famous pos
sessions.
Since seeing the screen play
Monday morning, I have had a
feeling that I want to go back
and be with these people again.
They seem to be so real and the
lives of the young circuit rider
and his bride have a magnetism
that goodness and superb" charac
ter seem to always have.
I love the foothills and moun-
tains of North Georgia and have
spent many summers there. I have
traveled the little Tallulah Falls
railroad so much that I almost
seemed to personally own it. I
have stood on the rear of the little
train and watched the mountains
with “Dad” Henderson, the con
ductor (in whose home I boarded
at Cornelia) all the way from
Cornelia to Franklin, N. C. There
is always an urge and a pull luring
me back to those scenes but it is
not often that I can go back.
Monday morning I went back to
those same locals. I saw the
clouds as they hugged the moun
tains along the railroad track. I
saw the red clay roads, and the
green corn fields, greener than
anywhere else, it seems to me. I
saw the fine contented cows along
the way; and the green mountains
change to deep azure; and I heard
again the name Nacoochee Valley,
and Demorest, and other places I
love. But best of all, I saw my
friends, the mountain people with
their rugged honesty and restrain
ed friendliness.
I could almost hear the sound of
the hounds as they howled our
approach after we liad been on the
mountain after luscious apples. I
once more stopped at a little cabin
on the mountain side and sat in
the cowhide bottomed chairs placed
on the dirt terrace outside the
door with red peppers hanging in
strings on either side. And there
I sat once more with these moun
tain friends and heard them tell
the tales of the hills.
The picture would be particular
ly dear to me even if I had never
seen the mountains. My father was
once a young circuit rider and my
mother was his bride. Both touched

many lives, making them brighter
and finer and more ready for the
glory world. My sister was mar
ried to a young circuit rider and
their first appointment (made by
the seme Bishop Candler mentioned
in the picture) was in the moun
tains near the home of the author
of “A Circuit Rider’s Wife,” Cora
Harris, whose book forms the
basis for the recently produced
picture which is the subject of
the story. Their first child was
born in an humble cottage on the
mountain side and their early ex
periences were almost identical
with those of the story revealed
on the screen.
It is readily seen why the picture
is especially precious to me. There
were many touching scenes we
could mention, such as the little
children of the Harvard student,
as they peered out at the preacher
and his bride from the corner of
the house, and the exquisitely
beautiful scene where the young
minister and his wife stand beside
the clay covered grave with a
green mountain forming the back
ground.
But the most beautiful thing
of the entire moving picture was
the silent story behind the pictured
story, and that was what any
young mnister and his wife, of
whatever denomination, can mean
to those whom they serve and the
fact that there is never a soul so
degraded but that he can be reach
ed with the proper approach.
It is comforting and refreshing
to know that so many people ac
claim this as a great production.
The picture will be shown to the
public three days, Wednesday,
Thursday and Friday, March 21,
22 and 23 at the Dunn Theatre.
